That's worse than mine. It's really a sad experience. The worst part for me is that I have a backup. It exists. Mine town is on my computer. The only problem, Nintendo's BS anti-save scumming technology is keeping me from using it.

Yup. The physical 3DS somehow keeps track of what your last save was. If you try to load an older one, it throws up an error and only gives you the option to start over. It's all sorts of messed up. Seems like the repercussions are worse than the problem it stops.
At the second Nook upgrade, there's an item catalog you can order most items from. Cataloging is picking an item up, which adds it to your catalog, and putting it back down. You can then order it from your own shop.
Good for re-orderable DLC and item sets.
Cool. That fits my needs just fine. With my use of the awfulness of time traveling to fix my town up quickly, that should work out just fine for me.
I'd give you some fruits but my sister sold all my fruits today. I can give you my fossils tomorrow though if ya want.
Dang that sucks. She was nice enough to let me sell my turnips at her place last week. I don't have as much as 16 million but I'd be willing to donate some of what i have to help.
God dang, the 16 million bell thing is heart breaking to me especially. I had a few hundred thousand on me. To lose 16 million is unimaginable, let alone all the other stuff.

So my Prima guide finally came in and lo and behold, most of the furniture that I scoped out for my eventual dream house comes from Gracie's house.
Do what Salsa suggested to someone else and roll the clock back 2 weeks and do that time-sensitive stuff. I'm sure GAF will supply you with Bells to pay debts, and tools so you can begin collecting wildlife again.
But fuck, losing it all to a glitch is fucking disheartening. It'd discourage me from starting over.

I'd start again honestly. Think about the fact that it could have been a lot worse down the line. Try to go for a better layout/better villagers and such, and set the clock accordingly to what you've lost. GAF will help you out with the rest.

well it feels like cheating when you're doing it because you don't wanna wait (thus not play the game like its meant to be played), but in this particular case it's the closest you can get to getting back the time you "lost"
nothing is affected in-game other than turnip stuff
i'd definetly do it if it's between doing that or not playing the game anymore

Kinda, but you and Yami are cases where it's totally fine. You both lost hours of game.

Yeah, my previous town was a mess, so I can do a bit better. I still want to go for that whole, town in the middle of a fruit forest look, but maybe a bit more organized.

Just heard about your loss. Man, I now really know how that feels. My sympathies. We're in this together now, haha. Let me know if I can help. I'm rebuilding now, but I should be all fixed up for the most part by end of the day tomorrow, barring my bug collection.
Not even that is safe. I've heard of people with physical getting fucked up too. I save obsessively for that reason.
And yes, in this case, Time Travel is justified.

I got almost all of my current 16 million through beetle farming, so that's what I was doing tonight. But eventually I wanted to do some diving in my own town, and remembered that because of my Wealthy Ordinance, I needed to get a few more medals. I thought it would be fun to do a Club Tortimer game with some random internet people. In the middle of a Bug-catching tour, the game froze, and it said there was an error and the game had to be closed. I turned it back on and there was no save data.

Physical will eventually die as well. 3DS carts still have batteries, right? Still, my issue is a special case, I recognize that. I have no clue how it happened. I'm going to be a bit nervous when I have to replace my SD card again in a couple days when my Amazon order arrive, but I'm just going to backup my saves every time for a couple days just to be sure the card stays alright. If I keep the save the absolute newest, it should work just fine.
If I open the gates for visitors, will it still work if I close the 3DS and it goes into sleep mode (while animal crossing is running?

Before the patch, yes, both physical and digital versions of the Japanese version suffered from slowdown, glitches and corrupt save files. Our copies came pre-patched with patch 1.1, however, which largely reduces the chances of these things happening.
Granted, there is chances for corruption to happen on the patched copies, as shown by Sats and others. As long as you are careful with SD card/game cartridge treatment, and do not turn off the system while it's saving, you are most likely in the clear. If you'd like, saving once a day at night and backing up that save is an option for people with the digital version although you'd have to do that every day.
Sats, I'd recommend contacting Nintendo of America/Europe with this information, there may be something they can do about it.

i'd do it every day if the 3DS' new save-backup tool let me :/
why not allow it for New Leaf and just erase it once it's loaded?

A lot of people said that save corruption had a direct correlation with doing download later. I think even saves in games other than AC as well.

Try reinstalling it without download later. Better safe than sorry, even if the DL later is only urban legend.

This is kinda scaring me since I did the eShop version, but I did choose "download now" so maybe i'm on the safe side.

You have to backup after every save to avoid getting screwed like I did, but it's still nice to have the option. It's a little annoying, but it's better than losing it all.

Holy cow, I had the same freeze/reboot issue today as well, except my saved data was not deleted. Now I'm fearful that it is only a matter of time for me...
