At this point, is the Switch 2 the worst kept "secret" in gaming history?

My memory on these things are pretty fuzzy, but relatively I still think Switch was worse since the entire launch lineup got leaked. The ‘hybrid system’ idea was also new at the time, and we knew about that as well before it was unveiled, etc.

The Switch 2 leaks are bad, but at the same time there’s barely anything new/major that has come out of it. But then again the ride isn’t over yet. So maybe we’ll get another launch lineup leak in the coming days.

I think the HW leaks were inevitable once they started cutting metal. Factory workers are going to leak.

I want to see the SW and know the release date.

The way I see it, for the past 10+ years, the iPhone is leaked ahead pf time, yet Apple still does a full unveiling and it sells 50 million units. It’s really not that big of a deal.

You know that not revealing the console is NOT their choice, right? I knew what you were going for, but calling for these people to be fired is insane.

Not only that, but we have no idea what the long-term impact of these leaks will be on the Switch 2's sales. Like, I can see three plausible scenarios here:

1. The impact is negligible, because only a small number of potential buyers are following leaks closely and they are highly informed consumers whose purchase isn't going to be impacted by the leaks.

2. The impact is positive, because all this extra publicity helps to build hype for the console and gets more eyes on the reveal trailer.

3. The impact is negative because the leaked information is perceived as being disappointing or underwhelming, and this narrative locks in before Nintendo has a chance to offer a counter-narrative through advertising and promotion.

Right now I think we're mostly seeing scenarios #1 and #2, but I admit #3 could become a problem if we continue to have spec leaks like the 8nm one. Nintendo's withered tech strategy is highly dependent on them contextualizing that tech within their larger vision for the hardware and software. Still, I don't see any sign that we've reached that inflection point yet.

I know things leak a lot for Apple as well but I can’t recall partners showing off the next iPhone in detail at public trade shows before the official announcement from Apple occurs etc.

But in general I agree leaks won’t be any issue as long as they’re isolated. The only problem I can see is that when stuff like this is shown off at CES, for example, that’s something the mainstream media may very well pick up and highlight to the general public. Which is something I don’t think Nintendo, or any company, would want prior to even announcing their next product or its name.

Not really a secret since Nintendo announced early 2024 that would show the Switch 2 in the fiscal year - until march

PS4 Slim beats by a little because Sony didn't say a thing. Was more speculation. Then some consumers just got it like was just a common PS4. Then Sony "we're releasing the Slim" with the Pro, and it was like The Right Stuff

It’s not a secret, Nintendo has said multiple times that they are working on a successor and even often mention before their directs that we should not expect any information on the successor. Nintendo also confirmed it during their investment calls.

If it would be a secret, Nintendo would not talk openly that there is a successor.

This whole leak situation looks more like some sort of viral marketing to me. Maybe Nintendo is trying to warm people up to the name "Switch 2" as well as the fact that its form factor and overall concept is very close to the Switch 1 (which, IMHO, is a really good thing) before a more substantial reveal that focuses more of the internal changes like upscaling, improved joycons with new functionality as well as the launch window games that come with it.

There is one more strategic component to all of it: by deliberately leaking bits of information about the Switch 2, they also warm up all the news sites around the world, putting their editors in a state of high alert. So, when the actual reveal happens, they've successfully alerted the most amount of internet news "journalists" within a certain short time frame and therefore generated the most internet buzz, which will be especially useful if they really do plan on launching the Switch 2 sometime in the next 3 months (which in itself is a pretty short time frame to fully launch a new console).

Take 2 could also mean GTA5.
given how much of a cash cow GTA Online is, I wouldn't be surprised of they focus on bringing that one over instead of RDR2.
I believe there are codes that are specifically referring to these three games. He's not making guesses based on the codes that reference specific publishers.
