Even outside the directing and writing, the actors are mostly terrible too. Nolan had Bale, Caine, Oldman, Neeson, Ledger, Hardy & Morgan Freeman for fuck sake.
Well true. Snyder has some decent actors too though, but you can tell from their performances they're uncertain in the role or trying to establish themselves the tone from scene to scene without consistent guiding hand from the director.

Overall though Nolan did have fantastic actors in all the key roles and they all delivered strong performances that were consistent too.

It was obvious it'd be way better than this the moment Ayer was announced as the director opposed to Snyder

no need for trailer

gonna be honest. outside of fury i don't fuck with ayer as a director at all.

harsh times was freaking terrible. sabotage was even worse.

but i love the aesthetic they have going (huge minority on that one, i was sold on their vision of the joker like a few minutes after my initial shock, i got it) and the casting and trailers. so i'm kinda worried for that but optimistic based on what they've been selling.

edit: oh right he made end of watch too, that was a decent cop flick.

I'm kinda mystified that people these days actually give a shit what critics think about a comic-book movie. It'd be hilarious if someone were to go back and compile metascores (at the time of release) for genre classics going back to the 80's.

I think I'll watch it, as I intended to, and not allow critics to think for me or sway my mind in any way. You guys coming out with your pitchforks should see the film for yourselves before claiming that the film is crap. The film may very well be terrible or you just may enjoy it but you owe it to yourself to see it before judging it.
Also some critics seem to condemning it simply because it doesn't fit the mold of a Marvel movie by not being needlessly funny. It seems more admirable that the movie attempted to be its own thing rather than attempting to replicate Marvel's formula and I think the subject matter should be taken seriously
. DC typically has a darker tone than Marvel works so it's refreshing to see that making its way into the film.

I don't think Marvel's wholly responsible for our general perception of what a good comic book movie is, but they have set this standard of these certain types of films that are consistently well-received because they fittingly take place in a shared cinematic universe and don't necessarily need good stories because the dialogue is snappy and the humor is fun, thus making their characters enjoyable so the next film is hyped since any said character will return for a sequel, which builds this universe. It's almost like the MCU is a cheat code Marvel used to mask their superhero movie formula. I'm not saying this to disparage Marvel either, or this "formula", because I think what they've done is sort of genius and surprising from a business and quality perspective.

I think some of the review comments that BvS is more of a philosophical Watchmen type deal is really interesting, because I want something different. I was hoping I wasn't going to get a film that I expected through trailers that seemed like it gave the whole movie away, and from impressions it seems like I mostly won't, which is kind of a relief. Maybe this movie has problems balancing a superhero action spectacle with a philosophical character study of sorts, we'll see, but at least they're doing something different from Marvel, and that makes me want to see it. To me, it seems like a lot of critics often bash superhero movies for either not doing enough or doing too much, but I rarely ever see a superhero movie attempting to "do too much", so maybe something like this can go appreciated for doing more than it needs despite possibly being detrimental to the film itself.

DAMN IT DROPPED TO 40%

Honestly when you look at the actual fresh versus rotten reviews (16 fresh, 24 rotten) it really does seem like a solid MIXED reaction, but that big old 4 and 0 combo at the top of the screen sure is depressing.

Well, if you look at metacritic (now 48/100 average)I would say even the "positives" opinions in reviews are more like 5.5-7.5 positive than actually being good.

A shame, really, I want a good Batman flick....

Civil War will (likely) be good. When's the last time we had a legitimately poor Marvel outing? Iron Man 2?

in b4: Age of Ultron or Avengers edge posts

At this point Civil War is definitely going to be the better directed, better loved movie.

Hell, you can put Snyder on Civil War and it would still be better received than BvS.

Iron Man 2 was weak when compared to the first, but I'd still out the hulk movie as their only poor outing.

Edit - I never saw Thor 2

so does civil war outgross this domestically?

We don't know if Civil War is any good, or how these reviews actually affect BvS going forward.

However, I think that a domestic win is about the best case scenario for BvS over Civil War. I have a hard time seeing it coming out on top overseas.

Thor 2 came out...didnt it? I can't remember anything about that movie but whenever it came it, was definitely legitimately not good

AoU being bad isn't edgy. Also the Thor movies are boring crap.

No need for edge, Age of Ultron was straight mediocre.

Thor 2 wasn't so hot either.

Thor 2 is definitely shit tier Marvel.

Thor 2 was fucking garbage.

?? AoU was hot garbage. Forgettable, hot garbage.

Jesus Christ. I completely forgot about Thor 2. Talk about irony.

But hell naw, not AoU.

once again shows how strong early impressions don't necessarily translate to a strong critical reception.

was starting to get a little interested in seeing this too despite not liking MoS at all, but i guess i was probably right in my initial scepticism. will watch on tv when it gets put on sky.

but winter soldier was Marvel trying to emulate Chris Nolan though with a more serious and grounded tone.

This might blow your mind but Chris Nolan did not invent serious and grounded movies. Hell, he didn't even invent serious and grounded superhero movies!
