I see everyone blaming Snyder for this disaster. Yes, he is a hack, and should never have been chosen for this project; however, the larger offender here is David S. Goyer. As much as I wanted this film to succeed, I knew it was virtually impossible with Goyer's involvement. He gets far too much credit for his work on the Nolan movies.

I'm hoping for Identity crisis adaptation.

Wonder Woman next...

This is humorous out of context.

I don't think Marvel's wholly responsible for our general perception of what a good comic book movie is, but they have set this standard of these certain types of films that are consistently well-received because they fittingly take place in a shared cinematic universe and don't necessarily need good stories because the dialogue is snappy and the humor is fun, thus making their characters enjoyable so the next film is hyped since any said character will return for a sequel, which builds this universe. It's almost like the MCU is a cheat code Marvel used to mask their superhero movie formula. I'm not saying this to disparage Marvel either, or this "formula", because I think what they've done is sort of genius and surprising from a business and quality perspective.

I think some of the review comments that BvS is more of a philosophical Watchmen type deal is really interesting, because I want something different. I was hoping I wasn't going to get a film that I expected through trailers that seemed like it gave the whole movie away, and from impressions it seems like I mostly won't, which is kind of a relief. Maybe this movie has problems balancing a superhero action spectacle with a philosophical character study of sorts, we'll see, but at least they're doing something different from Marvel, and that makes me want to see it. To me, it seems like a lot of critics often bash superhero movies for either not doing enough or doing too much, but I rarely ever see a superhero movie attempting to "do too much", so maybe something like this can go appreciated for doing more than it needs despite possibly being detrimental to the film itself.

This is a very on-the-nose post which captures my thinking on why this flick was always unlikely to get higher than a 60% or 70% (80% best case scenario.) The Marvel juggernaut has simply done too much for superhero movies as a genre in the last couple years and the conditioning and expectations it has fostered are too damn strong to break - EVERY superhero film has gotta run the risk of being compared to Marvel's stuff now, and the fact that Snyder is a controversial director, the mixed press this movie had from Man of Steel and the whole "ohhh they just wanna catch up to Marvel" feeling amongst the masses basically guaranteed that it was always going to be a fight upwards to get acceptance by critics.

I love the DC universe and I actually like Man of Steel a lot, but I can totally understand why a lot of general audiences find these films boring. The comparison that Marvel offers with its relatively easily digestible, well-made films is just too hard not to make.

Age of Ultron is a movie with literally zero redeeming qualities.
Not to just jump on the bandwagon, but I remember actively thinking AoU was terrible while in the theatre. To contrast, I felt conflicted in MoS, but later liked it. Disney's track record has objectively been quite a bit better though, so it's not so bad when you get a dud. WB has too much to prove.

Right...

And, I guess critics giving more than favorable reviews to the entire Nolan Batrilogy was just a fluke? Maybe, just maybe these recent out puttings by DC are simply shit.

Wishing for someone to watch Zack Snyder's entire filmography is pretty vindictive man.

Watchmen is top 5 comic book movie ever. Man of Steel still has the best fight scenes in comic book movie history... The guy can direct, let's continue to be armchair analysts though.

If the film is really no good, i will put the blame on WB for trying to shoehorn more characters and plot lines than necessary in a film. Why not let the DCU develop organically?

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
Sorry homie. It has a cheesy theme song but that's about it.

As a child of the 80's who recently re-watched this as an adult, I feel differently.

While the movie is certainly a product of its time, and a movie based on a cartoon based on a toy line has its obvious flaws, the 1986 Transformers flick shows more heart and emotion in the first 20 minutes than the entirety of the Bay franchise. I concede that it is a cheesy, 80s cartoon movie with many drawbacks, but IMO it shits all over the Bay movies in every meaningful way.

Snyder's internal thoughts: "Don't look at GAF, don't look at GAF, don't look at GAF, don't look at GAF, don't look at GAF......"

meh, I don't take other peoples ratings seriously and I don't know why other people do.

Tastes are subjective. I think Star Wars is pure rubbish along with the Beatles. I also didn't enjoy MoS along with many others. I think the Avengers movies are nothing better than pure blockbuster filler as well.
I fully expect I'll like BvS as just another movie that I can switch my brain off and watch like plenty of others.

Two of those Nolan films came out before the Marvel universe was a thing! Stuff has changed since 2008, and people's perceptions of the superhero genre in general shifted a lot after Avengers came out. In 2012 when TDKR was released it did get called out for being plodding and messy when compared to the competition - it got a good score in the end at least partially because Nolan is a more capable, well-liked director than Snyder and the movie was riding off of a lot of goodwill from The Dark Knight.

Still excited as all hell to see this. I have a feeling this movie will overall be a "fans love it, critics not so much" affair. What that says about the future of the DCEU remains to be seen, but I'd hope no rash decisions are made until at least Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman are released.

Will drop pants for Sony.
I guess when you already turned Superman into Batman in the last movie, the only place left to take Batman is to turn him into Punisher. Need to keep that dynamic between them.

I'm glad someone said it, seems in this universe everyone is brooding like Batman.
