Wait ... so was the accident her fault or his?

Based on her description, it sounds like it might be hers. If that is the case, you can certainly yell at him for not wearing a helmet. But it appears the injuries to his face are not the ones that will affect his career ... the injuries to his knees will. A helmet would have done nothing to prevent that.

:(

If he was in a car and not on a bike, he probably would have walked away. That's what people are criticizing him for- riding a motorcycle.

100%, and well-said.

If you're being paid millions of dollars per year because of what your body can do, then you need to do everything in your power to maintain that body in good shape. Taking a huge risk by riding a motorcycle -- even with a helmet -- is flat-out stupid and irresponsible.

especially in the NFL where the contracts aren't guaranteed. I hope Ben saved most of his dough.

Ravens fan in right place at right time.

1 ounce of Roethlisberger blood up for auction collected from the scene of the accident in Pittsburgh on June 12th at 11:30am

You can do with it as you wish. You can clone the DNA to make ugly stupid QB's with disturbing facial hair, or you can just mount it on your dashboard and just laugh when the Steelers are 4-12 this year.

yup. I just started reading moneyball and one of the more interesting parts was early on when Lenny Dykstra came back after being out at night and found Beane, at that time his teammate in the minors, on a couch reading a book. Dykstra (who is by all accounts dumb as nails) said Beane was being an idiot for reading late into the night - it would ruin his eyes, and your eyes are your most important asset as a baseball player. Too many of these guys take their physical gifts for granted, this is just another example of it.

If this had been Alex or Eli who through their season(s) away in a stuipd motorcycle accident Im sure the steeler fans would be laughing it up along with everyone else.

Hopefully this will force the NFL to more specifically define what it considers to be more "risky behavior" which is what all standard contracts apparently prohibit.

Update on that ebay auction

*PS you have to know this is a joke. What person not from Pitsburgh would be in Pittsburgh unless they were being held captive?

Ouch.

if this had been Lord Brady or Mark 'Nature Boy' Brunell, GAF would be having a parade.

True. I would be pretty bummed for them though.

I do agree that the NFL needs to effing button down on this kinda shit.

Do you personally know how bad the injury is? They seem to be trying to cover up how bad it is. I doubt they would rush him to the ER to operate right afterwards to fix up his knees, it is obviously something serious they are working on.

You are right though. He rode a motorcycle without a helmet and he deserves whatever he gets and no one should show any sympathy or respect for him (not even for a day). It wasn't like he murdered someone...
just because they aren't life threatening injuries doesn't mean he wasn't bleeding and stuff all over his face. plus he's a celebrity, of course they're going to rush him to the hospital to stitch him up and stuff.

bionic did you hear? They called a plastic surgeon in!

Big Ben = Gentle Ben now!

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06163/697655-100.stm

The car, a New Yorker with Maine plates, was driven by Martha Fleishman, 62, of Squirrel Hill, who made a left turn toward the bridge in front of the cyclist. The motorcycle hit the car and Roethlisberger flew into the windshield and then hit the ground head first.

Roethlisberger was bleeding heavily from a head injury, and blood pooled on the pavement. The witness said he was not wearing a helmet.

The entire front end of the motorcycle, was destroyed. The car sustained damage on the passenger side door. Fleishman's husband, Martin, confirmed in a telephone interview that his wife was the driver but said the couple didn't want to discuss what happened.

"We really have no statement," Martin Fleishman said. "We certainly hope everything goes well for Mr. Roethlisberger, but we have no other statement. Certainly this is terrible and unfortunate. We hope he has a speedy recovery."

He wouldn't comment on his wife's physical or emotional condition in the wake of the accident other than to say, "She's doing as best as she can."

If they are doing plastic surgery I guess it can't be that bad. Not that I know anything about medicine, but I would just assume they wouldn't be doing any plastic surgery right away unless it wasn't super serious.

And Darien don't get too happy. No matter how badly Ben is hurt or even if he never plays again, the Ravens will continue to suck. And Tommy Maddox is not a Steeler anymore so there goes your best shot of victory against the Steelers. We can't win a Superbowl without Ben, but we can still make the Ravens our bitches.

Poor bit..eh bionic... you misunderstand my glee. I am happy because now your quarterback and our new QB can swap knee injury stories since they've both now had work on their knees it will bring them closer together and therefore bring our cities closer together.

I'm working towards universal love!

Ben with his freshly healed knees just in time for football season... ah.....

EDIT: Ah crap I forgot this is the first year the NFL has changed our schedule in regards to you guys... usually the Ravens play the Steelers early in the season, then near then end... this time we don't even play the first game against the Steelers til Nov. 26... that's no fun. :(

If only Ben (and McNair) could throw a 70 yard pass on his knees then he wouldn't need them. :(

The only 70 yd on his knees TD's Boller will be throwing will, god willing, be those he imagines' while his ass meets the pine all season. We don't need McNair to through 70 yd TD's on his knees(can he even get up from his knees?). His accuracy is heads and tails above Bollers.

Exactly right on both counts. If it was Brady, a couple of these guys crying would probably be saying hallelujah or some stupid shit like that.

This thread has been pretty tame compared to the Winslow thread or other celebrity death threads. Everyone is just pointing out how much of an idiot and hypocrite Ben is for still getting into an accident even after speaking out against Winslow's actions.

I can't speak for the rest of GAF, but I'd be throwing a party if it was Cousin David.

John Clayton is reporting on ESPNews that it won't be season ending let alone career ending.

Jaw will take 7 weeks though, no word on the knees.

Breaking News! Leonard Little was apparently the driver of the other car. He was seen asking detectives if this counts towards his career sack total. More as it develops.

That coincides with what I had heard while listening to ESPN Radio, but the "no word on the knees" concerns me.

If true, he's so ****ing lucky.

I blame McNabb. He set this up. Obviously he was pissed that he was going to have to share the Campbell's Chunky limelight with a PA quarterback that has a ring.

Will you people stop that?

I, for one, do not wish to represent the QB of the team I support as a poet with a malformed right foot, likely suffering from manic depression, with a reputation for being overly fond of young boys and for incest and sodomy.

Superbowl repeat dreams intact!

Speaking of which, wasn't that lady from Maine? Isn't Maine near Boston? Doesn't anyone else see the Brady connection? Thank God a speeding car is not enough to take down Jesus.

What about Palmer? We all share in that kinship with our QBs.

Bionic, I have to give props to you. Unlike a lot of people in this type of situation, you have not been whiny. I won't mock you anymore, just other Steelrs fans.

EDIT: now that I think about it, you too Darien. I guess I am the only dick of the AFC North fanboys. I'll try to reform my ways.

Don't you want Eli to win in his first Superbowl appearance? You should be wishing for Eli to play Tommy Maddox.

This reminds me of the summer when the Eli-in-a-car-crash rumor swept Oxford one night. Not good times. Everybody at the bar was on their cell phones calling their friends who "were real close with the Mannings."

Stay strong, Steeler fans. Chaz Batch is very capable.
