Capcom just doesn't seem... cool anymore.

I was very LTTP, just picked up Ultimate MvC3 last weekend for $14 on PSN. Holy shit it's terrible. I seriously don't understand how the company that made MvC2 could release something so utterly devoid of fun. If it wasn't for RE7 being so horrifyingly entertaining, especially in VR, Capcom would be dead to me.

I've been trying to go back to it also with the supposed leaks for MvCI... I'm sure we'll both be roasted for it, but I totally agree with you. The game just lacks that special something that I can't put my finger on to make it fun.

On the other hand, I greatly enjoyed TvC, which came out just a few years prior.

That shit is toooooooooo expensive nowadays and would probably not even sell as much since the market demographics have changed.

Also the Models MVC and SFV are some of the best they've ever been. Beautiful and faithful to their roots nearly frame for frame.

I feel like something about them being modeled in 3D emphasizes a grotesqueness in the street fighter characters that isn't there in 2D.

It's could be done for less than you're implying. Indie games like cuphead are at the level of quality I have in mind and are more involved (more characters to animate, more backgrounds including entire platforming levels, a lot of it is handmade, etc), so it doesn't seem like a stretch for Capcom to make a fighting game with high quality painted backgrounds and high res character sprites that are done in an updated MvC and SF3A anime style. But you might be right about there not being enough demand for it. It's probably a niche thing these days and would bee seen as a nostalgia project. Also it seems unlikely they wouldn't move to 3D at some point. Would've been nice to see the high quality 2D animation style before the jump to 3D though.
