Chris Dring: In Europe, Astro Bot has done better than basically every new 3D platform game in the last 10 years (Mario aside).

Yeah, I'd say it is worth it myself.
Good enough for me :) I'll look forward to it!

Sorta-off-topic, but I'll never skip a chance to mention it, Astro Bot Rescue Mission on PSVR is legitimately a proper wonderful game. Seeing what they did with this and seeing it succeed, I love that Sony has at least one franchise in its stable that really relishes being a video game.

Awesome, love when a good game has success! But out of curiosity how many AAA 3D platform games have even been released in the last 10 years? I honestly can’t think of one, but I’m sure there are some.

From N nial 's and my post above.....here's a list...

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Psychonauts 2
Yooka Laylee & the Impossible Lair
Crash Bandicoot 4
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank A Rift Apart
Sonic Forces
Sonic Frontiers
It Takes Two
Knack 2
Concrete Genie
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Super Lucky's Tale
Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures

I'm sure there are more, but that's probably the highlights

Ratchet & Clank (2016) became the best-selling retail game in the UK in its week of release. The sales of the remake in its release week tripled the release week sales of A Crack in Time, the previous record holder. The remake became the first game in the series to debut at No. 1 in the retail software sales chart, whilst being the best selling title on the PlayStation Store in Europe.[35][36] On April 29, 2016, it was announced that Ratchet & Clank was the fastest selling title in the series.[37] It was number 1 on the Australian charts during the week of release[38] and became the second best selling game in the month of April in the U.S. at retail and on the PlayStation Store, making it the best launch of any game in the Ratchet & Clank series. NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan exclaimed that these sales recaptured success not seen for the franchise since the height of the PlayStation 2 era.[39] In the December 2023 Insomniac Games data breach, it was revealed that the game sold 7 million units, becoming the best-selling title in the franchise.[40]

So you agree this is trivial and complete non-news, there's no need to be so touchy!
Predictable post, but I fully agree.
It's amazing how hard journos are straining to avoid calling Astrobot a failure.

It's the best selling non-bundled first party Sony 3D platformer where you play as a robot flying on a ship that looks like a PS5 controller!!! Gureto suxessu!!!!

lol. Thanks for the list! I’ve probably played half of those. Some of those games I didn’t know were considered 3D platformers. Ratchet, Sonic frontiers, it takes 2.

So based off the original post it sold more than all of these? I thought it takes 2 hit 10+?

Is he? Why not give us solid numbers instead of these weirdly specific criterias? We have numbers from Japan and they're pretty clearly garbage.
He's not allowed to share specific number. But it's performance is unlikely to be garbage if it's above Rift Apart and Sonic Frontiers. Those games did pretty well.

Nothing at all. I have never misread the quality of a tweet so severely. I'd like to offer everyone on this site an apology for my thoughtless remarks. Furthermore, if Topher is willing to update the categories in December, I plan on personally nominating this for best gaming tweet of 2024. I dont ever expect forgiveness, but at least future generations could be exposed to this tweet if we give it the recognition it truly deserves.
What did you "misread" exactly?

Dring is basically saying that Astro Bot has done better than those games at this point in their life cycle, not surpassed their overall sales. So AB has done extremely well up to this point against other games at the same point, if that makes sense.

Love to see traditional games kicking goals! Hats off to the teams for making a game and not a service.

SonyGAF, when they bring this to PC, are the haptics worth buying a Dualsense for?
If it's even better than the free game on PS5, yes. It's one of those that really shines with it.
I need to buy this new game soon :messenger_weary:

Edit: Some of you are salty as fuck. Lay off the sodium, it gives you higher risk of stomach cancer.

Kinda funny how you come across as this after fake-crying about Japan Studio just a few months ago. I can only think on how worse LocoRoco or Knack 2 did in their home market.
That was just an excuse to take a shot at Sony, in reality, they didn’t give a shit about Japan Studio. The inner bitterness is clear, Astro Bot has completely dominated them, especially the Nintendo fans. If the chubby plumber were on the Astro Bot cover, the Metascore would be 98% instead of 94%.

Not a ton, but there have been some not named Mario besides the two you mentioned.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Psychonauts 2
Yooka Laylee & the Impossible Lair
Crash Bandicoot 4
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank A Rift Apart

Probably others I'm forgetting.

Ratchet is a shooter, not a platformer. But I'm sure to reporters it counts as a platformer, so I'm glad that Astro sold better.
Popular user-defined tags for this product:
Adventure 3D Platformer Singleplayer Action
Only the original 2002 game is a platformer. You wouldn't call any of the others one.

Calling Rift Apart a platformer would be like calling Doom Eternal one.
Yeah, like CoD.
You didn't think this through, did you?

You need to play the games again. Here are a couple of videos for R&C 2016 and A Rift Apart. There is plenty of platforming here.

The fact that Sony is not touting the numbers tells everything.

Astrobot could outsell everything else, and Sony aren't going to tout the numbers as much as they could, because this is a single player, standalone, traditional game that they can't squeeze for every fucking dollar possible.

It doesn't suit their business interests, shareholders or rampant greed to make a big deal out of this kind of game doing well.

If it had MTX and a GaaS component, they'd be singing sales from the fucking rooftops.

Damn, Pikmins are all over the place. I hope they don't protest breaking consoles at gaming events again or file suits for patents from 50 years ago as per usual.

Excellent success for Astro, a mid-budget game that has already surpassed expectations, despite not selling much in some mountain village in Japan.

It'd be nice if Sony actually released some numbers, but it seems like they don't care to brag unless a game does 10 million in 3 days or something.

Helldivers 2 is a gaas game that is also the fastest selling Sony game. Sony has yet to make a peep about its sales numbers. Even for games like god of war, it was the studio that told it broke records, not Sony.

Tbf R&C games lately have reduced platforming segments compared to the first games+ A Crack in Time, which also had plenty of platforming

Earlier this year there was "Penny's Big Breakaway", which I can heartily recommend if you haven't tried it. It's a more indie title for sure, but that is also reflected in the price. And Devolver Digital usually picks out the good ones.

No brainer... just do it.. its part of the experience and totally worth it.

3d platformers are hard to tell these days, because most could also be called action adventure, jump and run, run and gun, shooter, puzzle game, fighting game etc.

But here is what Wikipedia thinks:

This numbers count free copies given in the psplus / gamepass ?
It specifically said sales.

So don’t think that includes gamepass of ps+ downloads.

** also, why am I getting lol/empathy reactions for asking a simple question?

Looks like people are emotionally invested in making this game a success.

I still maintain, from what I have seen, I think both Psychonauts 2, It Takes Two are better games than this. No body gets salty about sales of those games.

Beating Sonic shouldn't be considered a success story in any year after 1999.
Oh, and it sold better than all those other indies / sequels/remakes/remasters of PS1/2 games that were tepidly talked about on enthusiast boards only for all of two weeks after release, before falling into obscurity faster than Concord? Be serious, the only game remotely resembling an opponent to Astrobot was Ratchet, and that one was marred by the wokeism controversies, at a moment in time when PlayStation hardly needed a "savior".

This is literally like saying that a Pokemon game breaking the 10 million sales barrier is some sort of milestone.
And I genuinely believe Astrobot is good, mind.
And now give me your best salt gifs, I'm here for those.

The GaaS game that they drew a lot of bad press with because of their idiotic decision to force a Playstation account on PC players? Probably a preety good reason why they didn't draw much attention to that one at the time.
