Colin Moriarty calls out Hot-Take Negativity on Social Media regarding February 2025 State of Play

Kind of wild that you're counting TLOU1 here despite it being cross gen... Ratchet and Clank being a remake and a poor one at that. Last Guardian was started as a PS3 game... What sly cooper game came out for ps4? Puppeteer was also PS3... I'm assuming you're referring to gravity rush 2, though 2 scored worse than 1... lost legacy was derided as glorified DLC at the time.

This is what I'm talking about when I say gamers are lying to themselves.

Itd about output. If the ps3 alreafy had x86 all those games would have been crossgen. Gt 6 as well.

If you prefer current output fine. I had more fun in those years listed above.

For me, Sony are not making the games I want to play. It doesn't if Sony releases 1000 games, if I don't want to play any of them, my impressions of the state of play will be poor. Reflecting back on the games I've purchased on ps5 this gen, it's been rather disappointing.

First Party Games Purchased:

TitleCompleted?Impressions
Miles MoralesYesEnjoyable and it's a good christmas game
God Of War RagnarokYesLong, bloated and a bit boring. GOW 2018 was better
TLOU Part 1Not YetYet to start this one. I've already beat the ps4 remaster
ReturnalNoGood game, I just don't click with Rogue lite games so will probably not finish.
GT7YesLukewarm on this one. Campaign is lacking but sport mode + VR is good.
Ratchet & Clank Rift ApartYesVery boring gameplay and story. Only enjoyed the graphics. Would not recommend. Will steer clear of Insomniac games going forward.
Astro BotYesExcellent game, really enjoyable and it's the right length.
Spiderman 2No Bad ubisoft design, boring story, will not finish. Also, the graphics were not impressive.
Horizon Forbidden WestNoGreat graphics, horrible mc, bad gameplay. Will steer clear of GG going forward unless they make another killzone.
Sackboy A Big AdventureNoAlright but will not finish and would not buy again.
Demon SoulsNoVery good game. I may finish it at some point. The restarting when you die is not really my jam though.
Stellar BladeNot YetStill working on this one. Pretty good gameplay but the story is just nonsense.

When I look at this list, that's 12 first party games purchased at full price from Sony. Of those, there are only maybe 5 I'd buy again if I had the knowledge I have today at the time of purchase. When I look at the announced games, I'm can't help but be disappointed. If I were to make this list for the ps4 generation or ps3 generation, it's a completely different story. One has to seriously start asking themselves if they're part of Sony's target market anymore.... It's even more annoying when you buy 2 pros only for them to be underutilized....

It's not disingenuous. We never had major announcements at TGA, followed by another major announcement at a February State of Play only 2 months later that revealed another first party game. You got these announcements all at once at one show each year (typically, not always - obviously there are exceptions going back to the PS3 era). As he said, the games are still coming and there's plenty they have revealed that we know is in the pipeline. Insomniac continues to have multiple games each generation like they have in the past. No doubt games take longer to develop in general, but there's still usually multiple major releasing every single year from first and second party.

Good lawd! It's refreshing to read a sensible take in a PS thread every now and again.

Thanks for this.

There is a prevailing perception that Sony isn't releasing a steady stream of exclusive titles or presenting them in SoP/showcases in a way that sustains hype and goodwill for the platform. Whether it's valid or not is a different debate, but the perception exists. You may not feel it. I may not feel it, but it's there.
I'd argue that's just a bubble who thinks like that.

Because every single time I mention something like that to people in rl they have absolutely no clue what I'm talking about. Absolutely zero.

You can say the same in reverse for you guys

This is fun, let's do some more. 🤭

that's mainly because casual players don't really care about exclusives.
they only care about the mainstream stuff, 99% of which are old multiplatform games or yearly sports games

What kevboard kevboard said. This "bubble" is certainly amongst the enthusiasts. Does or should that matter to Sony at all? I think it should. More than what IGN has to say.

These can both be true. He’s not a journalist, he’s just a guy that speaks on the internet and people pay him for that

So otherwise he's just a grifting internet personality, but he seems kinda trustworthy and reliable based on today's commentary.

I think online trends can/do have an impact offline. I don't think it was a fluke that Concord failed the way it did. I don't think it was a coincidence that the PS5 Pro got as much hate as it did out of the gates.
Concord was just a bad game.
The bad publicity phrase is just about it - it's actually not that important whether publicity perception is good or bad as long as the product itself is good. Both positive marketing and scandal marketing work just fine in attracting attention (the goal of marketing) for a good product. And for bad products hardly anything works.
Like it was with Hogwarts and BG3, among others - it's not like incels win, it's just products are good and all the drama just attract a lot of extra attention, helping with sales.

Does games on the show perceived good? Based on individual trailers we could be optimistic. Than masses not really understand what this internet fuss is about, but they are kept in the loop by all the drama, and things they get out of this is that "while trailers were good, some people was unsatisfied with show and there was a drama and internet bitching as a result"

He’s a guy with an opinion that makes for good discussion about videogames, nothing more nothing less. I find all of these influencer types to be grifters, that doesn’t mean what they say is always wrong

He’s not trustworthy on a claim he says “I’m not a journalist so I can say this” as a caveat. Things can be misconstrued or misinterpreted from sources

Those casuals are like 90% of the target audience.

And of that 10% hardcore audience, it's like 50% that has an issue with whatever Sony does.
You don't ignore their criticism, but it's wishful thinking if you believe companies should make them the primary focus.

I completely agree. This kind of thing always starts at the grass roots level. Within the bubble, so to speak. Then those with influence start to speak more and before you know it messaging starts to spread like wildfire until the "normies" catch on and it becomes the wider consumers opinion.

If Sony isn't careful and Colin thinks that this can all be ignored like the Microsoft shills did with MS third party showcases etc ( and let's be honest Colin is absolutely the sony equivalent of a Colt eastwood or Jizz cordon) then we will only see this get worse.

I think the reality of this is that Sony has completely fucked this generation with their gaas push so they are now moneyhatting third party games to cover their weak first party output. It's classic Sony, but the issue is their first party has never been this sporadic before. 1 game for the last two years, is it? Spider man 2 and astro bot? I think if this continues for much longer its going to generate even more takes like the general Internet is showing and a lot more defence from those like Colin.

You mean the hardcore audience which buys hundreds of games each generation yea dont give them anything.

This whole thing is stupid honestly....
  • If you honestly liked the show for what it was.......fine (y)
  • If you are honestly indifferent about the show.......fine (y)
  • If you liked the show, simply because it was a PlayStation show.......🤡
  • If you did not like the show due to there being nothing there that interests you, and you do not identify with any of the following bullet points.......fine (y)
  • If you did not like the show at all simply because there were not enough Sony exclusives, ignoring everything else.......why even play games? 🤡
  • If you did not like the show at all simply because it did show a specific title that they never said that they would show (i.e. Bloodborne, GoY, GTA6) .......your own fault 🤡
  • If you did not like the show at all simply because you are a fanboy of another platform.......you are an idiot 🤡
  • If you did not like the show at all simply because that's the current vibe of the gaming community at the moment.......you are an idiot 🤡

If they are buying hundreds of games then you'd think they have more varied tastes and thus be easier to please.

I'm actually extremely picky about what I buy, and as a result tend to devote a tens if not hundreds of hours to every game I play,

Does that make me a casual ?

The good news is that most of their first party studios (except may be Bend) have at least one game in the chamber that is well in the works. So all this fuss may sort itself out over the next couple of years and everyone is happy. Assuming not all of them end up triggering culture wars and dividing the base even further. Lol

Damn, why weren’t Colt and Jez able to just gaslight everyone into Xbox winning the console war then if all that matters are internet opinions from fringe communities?

Notice how Sony has NONE of these types of people

My argument was never against mainstream gamers though. We are straying away from my point. I was talking about mainstream media perception vs enthusiast gamer perception. We can agree that it's a bubble. All I'm saying is that bubble should matter more to Sony than what IGN has to say.

I agree with him but my only counter is that there are two Playstation fan bases.

#1 The OG's who really played through PS1 and PS2. These are the people who love the Japanese market, platformers and things of that nature.

#2 (People like me) Someone who had PS1 and PS2 but never really got into those game catalogs, but when PS3 launched became fully engaged with the majority of western studio releases and first person and third person shooters.

This State of Play was actually one of the better ones I've seen, though most of the games didn't really excite me per say. They did however capture my attention enough to watch the entire thing. Way of the Sword looked sick and so did that Octopus game.

Gaming media, influencers, and streaming are heavily negative regarding PlayStation. It gets more clicks than being positive.

If your barometer for a good show is whether Bloodborne or Parasite Eve show up, that's probably not a great barometer, but the thing is Sony has to do something to break the perception. Even more so than winning game of the year and ongoing game of the year in the same year.

Bro.....you can't be serious with the bolded. You're a smart guy. No way you actually believe that part.

It was totally in line with past state of plays, which is to say it stunk. Onimusha 2 and the trailer for the new game was cool tho. And that milf character action game looked great too.

Yeah well, like I said to the other guy, that enthusiast demographic isn't uniform.

People act like all core fans have the same perception.

I think the internet is certainly a toxic place more now than ever, but I do think they have a real perception problem that can and will and has permeated into reality.

I think online trends can/do have an impact offline. I don't think it was a fluke that Concord failed the way it did. I don't think it was a coincidence that the PS5 Pro got as much hate as it did out of the gates.

But the PS5 Pro is selling well. So what's the issue?

They've already said that once Ghost of Yotei releases, they'll be back to their normal schedule. Can nobody remember this?

I don't know if it was the best but yeah definitely felt weird to see the reactions. I don't care if it's third party or first party, especially now that Microsoft gave up.

You don't have to look too far away, it's better than the SoP we had just before. Sure it feels redundant to have yet another Monster Hunter or MGS trailer but apart from that, there were more exciting games and a lot of release dates.

Yea probably why Sony has it really easy with their low effort.
I don't think it's low effort.

They've been straight-up telling us for years that development cycles take longer and longer and that they're in the middle of restructuring the company to adapt to the market.

Some people just don't like the message, but you can't please everybody all the time.

Nobody except the most hardened troll is watching these things to get angry and give it a negative review. Most people are indifferent. If Sony isn’t impressing a bunch of people who are turning in hoping to be impressed, that’s a Sony problem.

This isn’t even hard, last Xbox show got raves for NG4 and stealth drop of NG2B. And NG2B really isn’t even that good. Doesn’t matter. I’ll say it again it’s about putting on a good show, which is different from having a preponderance of good games that gradually increment the score.

The the bolded is true, then none of this matters. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Must be the reason you only see gaas and open world games which most gaas games being cancelled already. Yes I also think people were happy that studios like bend and Bluepoint were working on shitty cancelled games for years. Jesus they have it really easy with some of you guys.

Which is why I’m hopeful for 2026 and beyond. But people aren’t that easily convinced till they see the receipts. This is the post-truth era after all. Words don’t mean much anymore

Some people just understand that these things happen and rather focus on what else is out there, instead of acting like the world is ending and fabricating dramas.

That's a way of killing all criticism. Nothing in gaming is the end of the world. They can ask 1000 bucks for ps6. It's not the end of the world, save up this stuff happens in an economy like this. 🤣

Collins a dumbass on this. They've had every first party team working on live service games the past 4+ years and have canceled 80% of them. All those teams won't release another game for 4 or 5 more years. That's why everyone bitches about no games, cause there very literally are none of the types of games they want out of Playstation--and there won't be for the long foreseeable future. Nobody wants another PS4 remaster, and relatively few people want a carbon copy Returnal 2. The 3rd party games have nothing to do with Playstation, you can play them everywhere.

It’s not uniform. But it’s not 50-50 either. Do any poll and you will see somewhere between 65-35 to 70-30 that are unhappy. You can call the majority delusional, but the reality is that they are the current majority. The minority are happy anyway, so it would be wise to tend to the majority and understand their needs better.

Hyperbolic much?

I never said you can't or shouldn't be critical. I'm saying some people are getting carried away.
So many games to play and people are whining about games that might not even exist.

How representative are those polls?

People always argue about polls and views and whatnot and then Sony's data crushes that warped narrative all the time.

Representative enough to have an opinion on it. What’s the alternative? If marketing was run from an ivory tower and not focused on actual enthusiast perception, the reality wouldn’t matter at all. It wouldn’t matter if there are so many games to play

Pretty easy to crush numbers when you raise prices and keep the quality as it is like ps+.

Well after focusing soo much on gaas this negativity after shows is justified imo.

Unhappy have much higher participation rate.
It's a general concept of silent majority vs loud minority. Silent majority just don't care, while minority care very much and very active in their position, so it looks like they much bigger than it's in reality.
