Could Sony sell a PS5 Pro with disc drive included?

The fact that the box is 'black', like the PS5 Digital, makes me think a 'white' one with the disc drive included could be a thing in the future.

Thoughts?

Sure, they can do whatever they want. They‘re clearly pushing for a digital only future but aren’t sure if the market is ready and as such leave their options open. Given the demand of external disk drives they might sell a bundle down the line recognizing that physical media is still in high demand…or the opposite. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Doubt it - the drive is available for those who really want/need it, like myself.

The default SKU is digital - they want a digital future and now is the time to condition people for it.

They might but it will be $800 or more. People have been shown to be willing to buy a console for $700 and then go out and even buy a disc drive for double the asking price and Sony will have the data now. However the PS6 will probably be digital so this is likely their way to force the situation.

PSN Terms of Service Section 8.4. No Resale or Commercial Use

"...Resellers, as determined by us in our sole discretion, are prohibited. When you order Content from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that Content for private, non-commercial use. That license is not transferable unless your local applicable laws say it must be. This means you can use a Product in the ways described in the license, but do not own the Product."

Sony has every incentive to tax the disc users with the $80 external disc drive to encourage as many of them to stay digital-only.

Now that they've sucked out the blood from our early adopter's pockets I wouldn't mind more people could access to a full fledget Pro for less price. Something like 750€ with the disk drive.

Really now ? Unless you live in an alternate reality, the Disc drive shortages have been a very real thing for months now, THAT'S the problem.
The fact that most drives go to scalpers isn't helping things either, shit, I've seen the drive - on Amazon of all places - being sold for 300+ Euros, fuck that shit...
(Sold and shipped by Amazon).

Heck, I've been reading in another thread that in Poland, a huge retailer has been selling them at a much higher MSRP which led to people complaining to the consumer protection committee for malpractice.

So no Ragna, the drive isn't "available" like you're suggesting and especially here in Europe, unless of course America = the whole world.

Just my 2 cents

Yep, big ass official retailer is scalping themselves. Ridiculous.

Sony really like to waste all the goodwill they gained in PS4 generation.

I imagine a price drop + new SKU with disc drive included at the old price is coming at some point.

Yeah, I can imagine post GTA6 that they'll do a PS5 Pro bundle that includes a disc drive once the PS5 family drops in price by about 100 dollars.

PS5 DE - 350
PS5 - 400
PS5 Pro - 600
PS5 Pro w/disc drive - 650

I can also see them doing holiday sales dropping 50 dollars across the board.

PS5 DE - 300
PS5 - 350
PS5 Pro - 550
PS5 Pro w/disc drive - 600

At 350 for the PS5 Digital Edition, it's going to be a pretty compelling entry price, but 300? That would make it a pretty hot ticket item for holiday season 2026.

Man imagine spending 700 just to endure an attempt to manipulate/tax/funnel you into not owning games anymore.

Someone made a comment that he's more likely to buy a 50 series card now that it's known the 40 series will support DLSS4. I get that - he doesn't feel like Nvidia is being as manipulative as they could have, so it's loyalty resulting from good will.

Sony has a poor image in my eyes right now, if that's how low they think of their best clients.

The PS5 digital was originally $400 and the disc $500. Then they introduced the slim at $450 and kept the disc variant at the $500 price tag. Presumably if they followed the later model, they would make a disc Pro SKU at $750. So they 'could', but I'm guessing they'd rather get $780 out of you keeping them as separate purchases( add $30 if you want the stand).

They'll need to fix the shortage issue one way or another, especially if there were to ever be a 'white box' SKU... But I still think it's an intentional shortage to push digital.

I was fortunate, I ordered my PS5 Pro + disc drive bundle through the retailer Very (about 1 week before launch, during the drive scalping). They had batches of stock coming and going regularly, with an expected shipping date for whichever batch you ordered. I received my console about 2 weeks after launch.

Don't know if it's any help but I just quickly checked and they currently have stock of the console and drive bundle, but not the drive alone.

You would have thought that but I think unless sales tank, Sony ain’t moving. Maybe in a year once they skim the sales from GTA launch.

Personally that’s just another thing that basically is probably going to lead me from not buying Sony hardware anymore. Between lackluster exclusives in pretty much every game of theirs lately (except for Astrobot) to low expectations of future titles, staying with PC and Switch 2 is going to be the way to go, IMO.

And I have been buying Sony hardware from very beginning and still have PS2, PS3 and PS5 hooked up to my TV.

When they need to cut the price, they can make a disc drive version with a live service game included. For example, a GT7 holiday bundle in 2026 for today's price.

I would love them to do so, but it seems the way the industry is going is that we're facing an all-digital future (which I'm quite unhappy about).

They already do in Spain I think, I've seen bundles shared on here that include the disc drive.

Nvidia is like the most exploitative and manipulative company in the gaming space right now, wtf are you on about?

they'd rather force people into digital. i'm sure there's been a few pro users who succumbed to buying something digitally because they either don't have a drive yet, or it's just sold out at that time.

By moving to an add-on drive they gave themselves flexibility. I think the long term goal is to push players into accepting an all digital future. I fully expect the PS6 to have an optional add-on drive, but only for playing PS4 & PS5 discs. I expect they will not make discs for PS6 games. Maybe some third parties will get permission to make limited runs of games, but no more mass scale physical media for the next PlayStation or Xbox consoles.

I was referring to a very specific decision by Nvidia and how that decision what perceived by and affected a client.

You can buy the bundle of console + disc drive.

Regarding the box, I assume you can Photoshop a white one and send it somewhere to print it on a carboard xDD

The idea of a PS5 pro with 2TB SSD is to push people towards the digital format, releasing a model with a reader would go against that.

That would get in the way of their attempts to (softly) push consumers into their digital-only ecosystem. I think they will continue the "separate disc drive" thing for PS6, but it will be even more expensive and harder to get.

1TB model + DD would probably cost the same.

Expanding storage is cheaper and (far) easier than finding unicorn MSRP disc drives. But yeah, Sony want people to go more into digital.

People going digital is natural and progressing, but most companies are forcefully accelerating it. MS is the worst offender but Sony wants to catch up.

They could but they won't. They want you to look constantly for drives until you don't feel like it anymore and then you become digital only.

I had to look for three months and ordered from five different retailers to get mine. Shit is getting ridiculous.
