Digital Foundry - PS5 Reveal Analysis & Reaction

Lots more interesting nuggets in the article, I recommend giving it a read.

"Elsewhere, another aspect of the Cerny presentation paid off spectacularly. One of the key features of the new GPU is the Geometry Engine, giving developers unprecedented control over triangles and other primitives and easy control over geometry culling. There's nothing new in terms of principles here - it boils down to removing the need to render triangles that end up being invisible in the final frame. The less geometry you process, the less work there is for the GPU, meaning that resources can be used elsewhere. The immense richness in detail seen in idTech 7 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare's IW8 engine owes much to culling. However, the next-gen geometry engine does this at the hardware level, while opening the door to primitive shaders, which helps to streamline the entire process."

20 minutes in and they have already heaped lots of praise on the presentation. How are they biased against Sony again?

You can't be transparent all the time. And ppl don't think all the ppl from DF are biased. I remember the good old polygon days and the one or two good reviews thyd throw Sony's way lol.

Bro but let's not start tht convo. We hear enough of ppls thoughts on tht.

Superior format for these that care.

“Yes, we finally saw the console, we know what it looks like and how gigantic it is - but crucially, yesterday's PlayStation 5 reveal also delivered software and lots of it. It was our first opportunity to see the extent to which Sony and its partners delivered on the vision set out by Mark Cerny in the articles and presentations we'd seen so far. What we got was technologically astonishing in several places and diverse in scope, encompassing both console exclusives and an array of cross-generational releases. It was a flavour - a taste - of the next-gen experience to come a few short months from now.”

They are but there is nothing to criticize in yesterday presentation.

It was perfection.
Now that's just hyperbole. Showing 1080p/30fps low bitrate streams to showcase 4K or 60fps games is not perfection. There's a good reason why they didn't do that, but it's not perfection. Showing small amounts of gameplay is not perfection. The stream was good, but it wasn't perfect.

A truly biased site would still make unreasonable criticisms of the stream even if it was "perfect". Using that excuse is mental gymnastics to rationalize confirmation bias.

I'm glad the system can be set horizontally.

Same, what a relief. I did expect it would be able to, but it’s so ugly when vertical imo. It actually looks quite acceptable to me when laid flat.

Doubt it will survive the all important wobble test tho 😂

Because they aren't getting praised in comparison test.

PS fans hated them during the PS3 era because it always came in last and digital foundry didn't buy into the "lazy developers" nonsense

PS fans loved them this generation because the PS4 was top dog and they had another year of EXTRA dominance against Xbox when the Pro Launched

PS hate them again because since the X1 launched games have looked better and playstation is again, second place, and DF seems to want better graphics than a 2 frame advantage when they can have both performance and better graphics with X1 with slight trade off

All content was re-uploaded in 4k shortly after.

One point they raised which I never considered, buy the digital only version and you are losing Blu-Ray movie playback and crucially, if we get it, back compatibility with previous PS gens.

Hmmm.
I’m 99% sure the Sony won’t added the lasers for CD-ROM so it won’t read previous discs.

Maybe it will read DVD-ROM from PS2 but that is the best you can expect.

X to doubt about RT on Clank's metal. It doesnt reflect Ratchet at all (or anything of the environment).

GT7 definitely shows RT on the tunnel.
Well Insomniac confirmed RT being used.

BTW you can read here:

And yes, we also saw judicious use of real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing - the kind of technological leap we could only envisage in the most optimistic scenarios possible when we first started to ponder next-gen console specs back in 2018. And yet there it is, in a game we expect to ship with the machine's launch, running at what the pixel counts suggest is indeed full native 4K (no mean feat when RT is involved). Developer Insomniac talked about ray tracing effect's on Clank's chrome-like finish but the game's lavish reflections work - particularly on the ground - may also lean into hardware RT.

How can we tell? Screen-space reflections (SSR) are a hallmark of this particular console generation, and while they do look good, visual artefacts and discontinuities are easily noticeable. Partially obscured objects on-screen don't provide the visual data to deliver fully accurate reflections, while anything that isn't being rendered on-screen at all can't be reflected. Ratchet and Clank side-steps these issue and looks wonderful as a result. However, there do seem to be some limits to the reflection implementation: not everything gets reflected, suggesting that hardware RT may have its limits.”

the devs specifically called out the RT on clank
And what did the devs say? Is it RT’ed or no? If no, will it be added? It’s a beautiful looking game and good RT implementation would be icing on this delicious cake.
Any news you have would be appreciated since I truly don’t have a clue on the RT implementation. Thx.
Edit: ah, never mind I see Ethomaz added info as I was typing up my reply.
Awesome info!!! Love R & C so I am really looking forward to this title at launch (hopefully).

If a launch lineup event with GT7, Horizon2, Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, and fucking Demons Souls Remake finally! it's next gen being screwed then praise be the sun for this screwed next gen.

Edit: that's all first party games ffs, have people forgotten ps4 launch lineup!?
Only Spiderman is a launch game, from what i understand.

Quality of this video is great.

takeaways so far:

Ratchet & Clank 4K native/30fps with RT
Godfall is Native 4K/60fps but RT seems absent now.
Horizon was Native 4K/30fps
Funny, because reading some of the tech-wizards on gaf, PS5 shouldn't be able to pull off stuff like R&C at native 4K.

Lots of crow will be eaten over the course of the gen, even during the first year.

It was OK. I was happy to see the console. I like the look of it. I hope the plastic sides are swappable. That would be cool. Diff designs etc. Alot of shit goes with black só hey ho.

Saw the presentation again. It was better this time with DF chiming in on it. Ratchet looks absolutely bonkers. It will be my first Ratchet game. The switching between worlds looks amazing. I wonder how impressive it will be on The Medium and/if a Silent Hill is in the works. I see a lot of potential here for cool game concepts.

Housemarques game looks interesting but I've been burned on them twice. Didn't enjoy Resogun or Matterfall at all so I won't be picking this up unless cheap.

Project Athia is just stunning. I loved Final Fantasy XV and this seems to be in the same vein. Done in the same engine which shows.

Demon's Souls is a no-brainer. It's the killer app for me. I'm buying a PS5 solely for that.

Horizon 2 is also a given. Loved the first game and the sequel seems to expand on the story and Aloys adventures in the best possible way.

they are whenever the narrative fits for Sony fanboys.
and when they are praising Sony they will gladly take their word as gospel.

they were among the people that always stood by the github leaks as being real, and back then that obviously didn't sit well with Sony fans, so they were declared Xbox fanboys partly because of that.
even tho, anyone who wasn't blinded by fanboyism knew the leaks would be very close to the final hardware
