DOOM II RAY TRACED Mod vs Vanilla - Graphics Comparison

That awkward feeling when you kill dozens of zombie troopers and demons from hell whilst listening to what is literally elevator music.

We're a little late in publishing this one - it should have gone up last week, but Gamescom got in the way! Still, ray tracing? In Doom 2? Sounds like a bad idea, except it looks rather cool in action - especially when paired with voxelised sprites and fluid-simulated gore! John Linneman and Alex Battaglia share notes on their experiences with the mod.

The blood is terrible enough to make me pass on this.
I saw this post before I watched the video and thought for a moment you were being hyperbolic, and I owe you an apology. You were 100% correct.

We've had great gore mods for ages (like beautiful doom) and THIS is what they come up with after implementing ray tracing?

It has nothing to do with the RT. You can turn off this blood in options.

Joking right?

It doesn't look worse, the Voxel models are nicely done and fit the aesthetic well. The feet were staggered to actually look like a foot.

Cool technical showcase for someone to throw in their portfolio, for sure. It honestly kind of helps put into focus just how "realistic graphics" make everything look so fucking boring, though.

I know, I'm just saying that their tasteful implementation of it was extremely skilled, and the blood is amateur hour shit. There is a huge aesthetic discrepancy.

If you turn off jelly blood, does it revert to the default blood effects?

They try to, but they are not detailed enough. They try to look like a foot, in the example, but they do not quite get to the level of the old low res sprite.

Great voxel model, better than the one I can draw myself 😂, but still prefer the sprite and visually it shows one is still above the other… and it is not the voxel one. The detail is evident in the pictures c’mon :D!
