First reviews for the Emoji Movie (take a wild guess!!!!!!)

At least angry birds is an actual IP. I haven't seen it but I'm absolutely certain it has to be better.
I think it's still on Netflix, it's definitely worth a watch, especially if you like older Simpsons. The humor and animation are fantastic. Chuck's (the yellow bird) back story is hilarious. The entire "welcome to anger management" sequence is just so good.

I don't know if it's just because my expectations for it were so low but I just really love that movie. So far everyone I've forced to watch it with agrees with me too so maybe just expect the worst and you'll be surprised? I legit think it's a good movie though. It's hard for me to really call it a kid's movie... not because it has adult humor (it does) but because it deals with a lot of adult issues. I'm kind of shocked it got made the way it did.

This year was surely a lowpoint for american animation.

Cars 3, Despicable Me 3, Emoji Movie, Smurfs.... Captain Underpants is the standout movie so far lol

Uh excuse you this year also gave us Boss Baby and Lego Batman.

I'm actually really bummed Smurfs apparently sucks. They poisoned their well with the live action bullshit though. They should have just done it all CGI from the get-go like they originally planned.

Also sad to hear Cars 3 underperformed given that it's apparently the best one of the series.

I'll never understand why the emojis in this movie don't look exactly like the emojis on my phone. There was no need to stylize them into characters, the design already exists. Design is literally all emojis are.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this but Emoji look different across different devices. Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple, they all have their own designs for Emoji. And I doubt Sony would want to pay to license those designs when they could just make their own.

lmao

Managed to convince my brothers to go see this trainwreck with me so we can MST3K it. Seeing it on discount ticket night to give Sony as little money as possible.

Not shocking, but this movie could have been another Inside Out. The idea of characters being singular emotions could be hilarious.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that either you didn't see it, or you don't like early Simpsons seasons. Because Angry Birds was actually really good (shockingly so, I only saw it because I thought "Hey, Lego Movie turned out good, let's give this a chance") and it's written by OG Simpsons people.

It's also absolutely beautiful to look at, the animation is incredible. Sony Animation might not have a very good track record but the animators there are talented as fuck.

Edit: In which case I guess your post could be taken as, yes, it is much worse than Angry Birds, because Angry Birds is surprisingly a good movie.

I tried to watch it and stopped after 15 minutes or so. Disliked every single minute of it.

I'm not, just saying that it's a low bar.

Right I wasn't trying to challenge you or anything, and yes it is a low bar, I was more wondering like how much they cleared that bar by. Like is it WAY better, or is it just a little better, does it knick its toe on the bar, that kind of a thing.

Did you at least make it to the first anger management meeting? (I can't remember how far in it is but it's definitely near the beginning) I feel like if you get there and you're not into it by then you just won't like it. But damn did it hook me.

Speaking of the Angry Bird's movie the creative team for the sequel consists of Thurop Van Orman (Misadventures of Flapjack creator, worked a lot on Adventure Time too) directing and John Rice (Rick and Morty Season 1, King of the Hill) co-directing, and will be written by Peter Ackerman (The Americans, the two good Ice Age movies). So I have hope it'll be just as good if not better than the first one. Maybe if you didn't like the first one this'll be different enough but still good? I have a lot of faith in Thurop.

Cars 3 was good.:| Captain Underpants is the standout indeed however (and there was Lego Batman too).

Ugh I gotta see Captain Underpants. After being blown away by Boss Baby I was really excited to see it but I just haven't had a chance to get to the theater lately. Soooo many movies I need to see ;__;

After seeing that trailer I immediately thought 'cheap Inside Out ripoff', glad to see I'm not alone. As everybody new, this movie was doomed from the start and a quick cash grab.

You know what. I'll give that movie a second try and report back. Maybe now that I know it's not your typical Disney kind of beginning to a movie I'll like it better.

The “plot” is really an excuse to hop from one app to another; there are stops in the lands of Candy Crush, WeChat, Just Dance, Instagram, Spotify, and (for the kids!) Dropbox. That last one proves crucial, saving the fugitive trio from a pursuing robot. “Don’t worry, it can’t get in,” Jailbreak helpfully notes. “It’s illegal malware and this app is secure.” At the climax, a Twitter bird comes to the rescue.

So we've finally arrived at the cyberpunk future where corporate identity and allegiance is all important

The very beginning of the movie is actually my least favorite part. They have to set everything up (they're flightless birds, Red has a bad temper) and it's a little weird, I'm not super into the altercation that lands Red in anger management. The "public hearing" has a couple good sight gags in it, but for me it's all about the anger management scene. Once you get there you should be able to tell pretty quickly it's not a normal Disney-esque kid's movie for sure, and get an idea if you'll like the rest of it or not.

This actually makes me irate

It's Inside Out, The Lego Movie, & Wreck-it Ralph put into a blender and the end result is some inedible blobby mess.

how well was that one received? I watched it for maybe 20 minutes or so but I really wasn't in the mood at the time, and it didn't do anything for me. And I loved The Lego Movie

Wasn't very well received by me. A bunch of references and that 'carry on talking after music stops' humour with a boring teamwork subplot plastered on for the kiddies. You missed that part. It was popular because The Lego Movie generated good will but it made less.

Yikes, the best one? I watched Cars 3 with my daughter, and found it completely forgettable. Then again, I am most definitely not the target demographic, as I do not care about NASCAR, racing, cars, country music, etc.

I knew it was gonna be bad, as in it would probably have a 30 or 40% on RT bad, but holy shit, 0% so far? This movie is getting utterly demolished and man is it glorious.

Sony Pictures has to go under. Almost everything they produce is liquid shit.

its not just about the ticket sales, think of all the merchandise they'll sale for this.

Problem is they don't own the rights to Emojis, they just own the rights to their specific interpretation of the Emoji designs. Which means if this film is a hit they'll be competing with the cheaper knock-offs of Emoji merch featuring poop etc.

Looks like Verizon or some faceless hedge fund is going to buy Sony's movie division on the cheap.

Fixed.

Either that or the whole thing will be sold off piece by piece and Columbia Pictures will become nothing but a filing cabinet in the basement of WB Home Video.
