Spent my afternoon/evening trying to undervolt my 5090.
Not too great results. Seen some reduction in power consumption with negligible performance loss but temperatures aren't budging much if at all. As power hungry as this card is it is really running almost at full steam so to speak. There is some voltage overhead which is to be expected but you're not gonna drop temps without sacrificing performance.
I mean undervolting does require some performance sacrifice but I think to see any meaningful drop in temps you're gonna need to take a good hit to performance. This is the Founder's Edition (nvidia's design). I don't know how AIB's will perform.
I tried a +250 memory OC but it slightly made performance worse. So just sticking to a 975mv curve. Default is 1050mv i think. Not as good as my 4080's (FE) undervolting. It's been a while but I remember seeing a good ~3-4C drop in temperatures and up to 70W less power consumption while maintaining same performance. This was with a ~+800 mem OC.
5090 is seeing at most 42W reduced power consumption. At most 3C lower. This is will losing ~3fps. There is some efficiency to be squeezed out but yeah this card is already going hard.
~500-550W power is shocking but i'm actually seriously impressed at how quiet and cool this card runs at! max temp I saw was 68C. It's a bit hotter than a 4080 but not my much. Compared to my 2080 it is a lot cooler. The same benchmarks I was running would hit mid 70s to low 80s!!
Damn. Thanks for sharing. I was curious about undervolting, because that what I did with my RTX 3080 (decreased power consumption from 320W to 200W and only lost 3% performance).
Close to 600W too much for me. European electricity prices + initial cost of the hardware make it not possible for me to use it as a gaming device to make my games look better.
I would've expected it to undervolt super well tbh. If I had guessed I'd've said you can go down to 350W and lose close to no performance but looks like I am wrong.
I have been wrong a lot about Blackwell.
Now time for fries, chicken and soccer.
