GAF: how old are you and until when will you continue playing?

Getting closer to 40, needs to happen something really bad for me to quit, ngl tho, these past few years have been on a low for me when it comes to gaming, seeing great series disappoint or straight up crashing and burning took a toll on me (ME Andromeda, TLOU, Uncharted, Dragon Age, Spider-Man, NFS, and more) but since there is nothing that can be done, I'll focus on what's best available and salute and remember the best times I had with those games

35, fps is the biggest concern to me, if you attach genres to car brands I'd say Mercedes is Strategy, fits perfectly for retired old men, BMW is fps for masculinity etc...

51 going on 52. Having harder time playing games with small fonts and provide no bigger text options.
(For example, I'm on hold for the Unicorn Overlord on Switch w/ portable mode - so am planning to continue on the big screen when I can)
Also takes about 2-3 times longer than most folks when playing any given game - and with time being the most precious thing with all the life throws at you, my completion rate for any year has been like maybe 5-10 games.
And for the year of mid 2023 - mid 2024, only game that I completed was Zelda TOTK.
But that also gives me a reason to be pretty selective of what I want, etc.... which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I do plan to enjoy gaming till I can't see and move my hands... so probably I'll be rocking with some sort of portable on my deathbed.

Age 52. Although my interest in video games has decreased a bit in the last few years, as long as quality games like the one in the picture come out, I will continue.

What software did screenshot this image from?

Also, you have fantastic taste. Every game on the list here that I have actually played has been very good!

41, still going. Not playing as much as I used to - or I'd like to, but I'm here.

I'll be playing (and re-playing, love that) forever, I guess.

If I can retire - or semi-retire - in the next years I'll get back to more intense gaming (no online, just getting lost in games).

Books, movies, music, games. That should be my work.

44. Aim to retire at 55 and finally work off the backlog. Thank God for story/easy mode in games, that should keep the party going well into my 70s.

This is where skill based match making is great. You'll eventually end up with other people just as slow.

49, soon to be 50 and I plan to game until the day I die...first console that I can remember was the Coleco Telstar Ranger and our family got the Atari 2600 shortly after, been addicted since the first time I played! Nice to see a bunch of old crunchy bastards like myself on here, I thought this placed was only filled with young whipper-snappers!

45, I still like it, but not like before, I have been doing outdoor stuff and traveling, so I barely play anymore, I am playing A plague Tale, Requiem. I will probably buy PS6 and then I will see.

What retro consoles have you got RG? You still still have your Dreamcast?

Yup, still got my Dreamcast with about 30 odd games, it’s my favourite console and it’s probably my largest collection

Also have…

Saturn
PS1
PSP
PS3 (mainly use it to play PS2 games though)
GameCube

52 going on 53 in September. My body has broken down somewhat, which actually leads to more gaming as I can no longer play sports competitively. Kids younger than my own kids skating around me like a traffic cone anymore, so I'm retired from mens leagues, but I still am awake on the late schedule and I fill that with gaming. My kids are playing their own games, and that keeps me into things as we play together sometimes, which is the only multiplayer I can stand.

Used to play MMOs with my wife a ton, she is out of the gaming now and I can easily play smaller single player games in that time where we used to play hours and hours in a single game together.

I still behave like I am going to play everything at some point, but with a 880 game backlog even I know there is no shot. Only real adjustment I have made is I no longer buy anything and work from the backlog exclusively. Will probably take injuries/health to get me out of the game.

I'll be 40 in March. First console was an intellivision and Atari 7800.

I'll always play games but I haven't been dialed into mainstream AAA for over a decade, because most of the games objectively suck. I skipped the majority of PS4 and didn't get one until 2019 or so. I was still gaming but it was mostly classic era RE, Skate and Mass Effect.

Covid got me back into gaming in a huge way and I have since taken to VR and AA gaming.

I could skip all future releases and be fine with my back catalog. I also own a shit ton of old consoles. I'm more of a gaming enthusiast than a "gamer". I'm not interested in hype train nonsense and I don't make excuses for AAA games that blow. I'd be perfectly content playing RE 96 for the rest of my life.

That's a great collection.

Are you rocking a CRT for the older consoles or have you got an adapter?

I don’t have room unfortunately and since switching to OLED I don’t think I’d enjoy going back to CRT’s black levels

I use HDMI adaptors, the Dreamcast KAICO one is by far the best due to Dreamcast’s VGA output, looks gorgeous on my 55” Bravia.

Turned 33 a month ago. Still getting in an hour or two a day. As my very young kids get older I imagine I will have less time to play. It's not the end of the world as I've been gaming for so long plus so many games these days are carbon copies of previous entries / competition that sometimes it feels like I'm playing the same thing yet again. Will just have to be more selective!

I saw young techies quit their hobby in their early 20s, more power to them for being young programmers but tbh this is backward, gamers are more skilled on programming and software engineering, both this job and hobby works together in mysterious ways but it's hard to explain this for these people /parents.

Nice to see so many over-50's here. Makes me feel less like the odd man out. We ought to form a clan, Geezer Gaffers.

I spend more time on GAF than I do gaming. That will probably continue into the future. I may have a stroke, go senile, and have to give up videogames, but I'll still be posting on GAF, and no one will know the difference.

I'm 36 and have been a long time gamer however with having a kids, I have definitely dropped my hours to only a few hours a week... Not sure if I can continue playing the games I like with so little time!

Do what I did and get them into gaming.

Helped me to rediscover Nintendo.

43. I remember playing SNES on launch night at my buddies house. First was C64, then NES, then every console up to the PS4 gen. We have them in the house, but I haven't played seriously on a console since mid PS360 gen. For me it was the screen tearing. Just went full time PC.

I'm playing until Microsoft acquires Valve.

will be 40 this year but with the knees of a 60-year-old man since my right ACL torn 2 years ago and meniscus tear in the left knee.

I'll be playing games even after retired.

34.

Not too surprised to see this as among the younger age compared to the average. It was like that in Gamefaqs.com too where the average age was around 40 since that site was also made over 20 years ago.
