Gamespot: Couldn't Play It, So We Assume MGSV's FOB Mode Is Locked Behind a Paywall

In The Phantom Pain, players use various resources acquired within the game to facilitate the construction of an off-shore base, but in order to participate in the online multiplayer mode, where players attack each other's bases, they must first use real-world money to purchase MB Coins. MB Coins are then used to purchase open water in the game to make space for a PVP-dedicated base. This was discovered during GameSpot's review process for The Phantom Pain, but without online functionality, we couldn't determine the cost of MB Coins, or fully evaluate F.O.B. mode.

I refuse to believe that they would advertise a mode like this that you had to pay for.

Also the ending part of the OP is also interesting.

Since they weren't online I don't think they could make an article like this until we know for sure what's happening.

Edit: Posting this screen of the tweet realcZk linked

So, in the end is there anyone that will actually have a F.O.B? Can't believe Konami had to shit on Kojima's big idea and work just because they needed a bit more money.

There has to be a way to get it in game. There's no way they'd make a substantial video like the Gamescom one for something like this... right?

So in other words, no one will use this mode, and whatever interesting ideas they implemented with this multiplayer mode are going to be utterly wasted. Nice.

Edit: Hmmm... that makes more sense that there are other ways to earn them. Hopefully they aren't artificially limited to encourage people to spend real money.

NOOOOOO

FOB invasion is what I was honestly looking forward to the most.

Gross.

Pretty sure this is a misunderstanding, Ken mentions they can be earned from singleplayer missions, unless he's talking about something else here:

I really have a hard time believing the mode requires you to pay. I do believe MB Coins are purchasable with real currency though.

I don't even want to even have to earn them. I wish they would have gone with Watch_Dogs system.

That's absolutely ridiculous, and maybe they'll be earnable SOMEWHERE in the game that the reviewer just didn't find?

That said, I'm really excited about the prospect, so I'll bite if it's not too expensive. $3.99 or $4.99 for a big ol' plot of ocean would be acceptable to me.

The reviewers weren't allowed to go online while playing were they?

This strikes me as one of those things where you get free coins the first time you play to buy the essentials.

Exactly. You'll be able to purchase them for sure but there must be a way to earn them in game

Part of me believes this isn't the full story as I know the reviewers didn't have access to the microtransactions.

I wouldn't be shocked if there is a way to purchase this with real money but there absolutely HAS to be a way to do all of this in game. If not. Konami dun fucked up.

I bet there will be ways to grind the coins. Like maybe the coins drop or spawn if you play online generally.

So a bit less crappy, in that case. But crappy nonetheless.

Any other game and I'd be out, right now. Any other game.

Fuck off Konami, Kojima was too good for you. Christ, this is distasteful.

Gotta make back all that development money Kojima in the scummiest ways you can huh Konami? Really depressing to be nickel and dime'd like this.

Edit: I'm really starting regret buying this game, even if it is to support Kojima's last Konami project.

I believe Sean Eyestone or someone mentioned that you were able to earn MB Coins normally throughout the game as well. Don't understand why people are freaking out.

Thread title is so misleading and instigating, its ridiculous.

didn't they already say that you earn MB coins while playing the game, the payment options are for people who want shortcuts.

So, let's wait till the 6th of October to know about the skill based means to acquire MB coins then ?

This has nothing to do with MGO. The FOB stuff is part of the single-player experience. They're referring to whatever central server it pings to not being up because the game hasn't launched yet.

Like a damn fiddle.

If, y'know, true. It's a bit crazy to lock something like that behind a paywall and not, say, the rest of multiplayer. If Dark Souls locked out invasions behind paywalls it'd make no sense.

Yup. Just like there is a way to use money to speed up development I wouldn't be shocked if there is way to buy MB coins.

Hopefully it's a misunderstanding. Has to be a way to earn this in game.
