Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

That test shows that there's no improvement with SATA 3 over the standard PS4 with an SSD installed. It's still bottlenecked.

So while you do get faster load times, it's not a huge difference.

Ok so just like orig ps4, there were improvements, but not drastic ones.

I went with SSHD then, planned on doing same for the pro.

Good enough for day one. =)

Those are acceptable speed improvements from my perspective, so I'm going with an SSD. It likely helps with texture streaming as well! :)

Yeah ill be moving my SSD from PS4 to Pro, and I agree it's not all about the load times. Heat and noise are better with SSD, as well as texture streaming like you said

They need to try longer loading games but 20% min improvement across the board is pretty good...with half the time on Tomb Raider being significant.

I wonder why they didn't do a comparison between the PS4 and PS4 Pro with the same drives, that would have probably been more useful to a lot of people.

anyone here already had an SSD in their PS4 and those games care to comment?

Which bloodborne level was it? we have some times for that

Bloodborne - Central Yharnam
Stock HDD - 18.8
SSHD - ?
SSD - 14.32
This isn't really an adequate comparison due to them being two completely unrelated tests but this is data from DF in January concerning the original PS4 so that we can see the PS4 to PS4 Pro loading times.

DF (Standard PS4 Only) said:
Bloodborne - Central Yharnam
Stock HDD - 30.8
SSHD - 23.4
SSD - 16.9

Is it time for a PS4 SSD upgrade? (Digital Foundry 23rd January 2016)

EDIT:
I want to emphasise again, this is not a like for like test so please try not to read too much into the improvements you see on the PS4 Pro. Just use it as a rough guide until we get a proper comparison.

So will the 1 TB FireCuda load noticably faster than the stock HD?

Or is the FireCuda so popular here mainly because it is one of the few 2 TB options?

Did that guy in the SSD speed comparison video stated they are using a Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB SSD? (even though they show a Sandisk SSD)

That SSD is kind of old in terms of controller used and if compared to a Samsung 850 Evo it seems a bit slower.

http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Samsung-850-Evo-1TB-vs-HyperX-Fury-240GB/3576vsm13145

I know the above is PC testing only but take into account cheap SSDs that advertise great read and write speeds (500mb/500mbs) usually don't fair well in the small filesize department.

I have a 850 Evo to go in my PS4 Pro when I get one.

Yes, I remember from their OG SSD tests too that Bloodborne was significantly higher on the stock 500GB.

At a glance it looks like a great improvement in the stock Pro HDD speeds, but let's wait for more tests to solidify that.

Of the 4 games they tested, the only one that got close to 50% was Tomb Raider at 48%.

Bloodborne managed 23.8% faster (14.32s v 18.8s)
Hitman managed 20.3% faster (5.64s v 7.08s)
Infamous manged 25.1% faster (9.56s v 12.76s)
ROTTR managed 48.5% faster (6.88s v 13.36s)

As someone who had a SSD in my PS4 at launch and then removed it for other uses since the speed difference wasn't enough, I'm not going to bother this time unless more (new) games start to show more results like ROTTR.

an SSHD would once again be the best compromise.

I'm sure DF will have a more exhaustive batch of tests though.

Those are great loading times tbh, 10 seconds is nothing.

No tests so far. It's popular because it's 2TB and it's SSHD which has shown improvements over regular drive in the PS4. So if you are going for larger size, might as well go for SSHD as the price difference is minimal.

I think also Bloodborne got some post launch optimisation on loading times which may skew results. I'm going to test my PS4 with SSHD tonight, then stock Pro when it's up and running...once the results are out I'll go for 1TB SSD or 2TB SSHD.

Yeah, we need some long loaders like GTA V - something that might really test a loading time.

is there a significant difference between a 7200rpm and a SSHD?
I already have a 2 tb 7200rpm but if there's a decent speed improvement on the SSHD I rather get that for the ps4 pro.

Got the Crucial MX300 750GB SSD today from neweeg! Cant wait to drop it into the Pro tomorrow :)

Is it a USB based Sata3 interface? Like the OG PS4 did?

I think the 1200 series removed that, wonder if its back. Think a chip breakdown found that.

Ordered the firecuda 2tb sshd from Amazon uk, it's out of stock but less than £120, hoping to get it by next Thursday when I'll set my pro up

Dang. What was the reason for SATA 3 implementation, then? I don't know anything about the hardware, so I apologize for the lack of knowledge.

The SATA2 interface wasn't bottlenecking the PS4
It couldn't even max out SATA2 specs (far from it) so it's not weird not to see any improvement
The limitation that was in place on the standard PS4 seems to still be here on the Pro

Is that pre-patch or post-patch for Bloodborne? There was a huge improvement in load times after one of the patches to the game.

See gooner's post above from a really old test:

Bloodborne Loading Times:

Stock / 7200rpm / SSHD / SSD

First Floor Sickroom 36.7 31.5 32.6 26.6
Central Yharnam 41.1 35.3 33.5 29.8
Respawn at Central Yharnam 44.4 37.5 33.9 31.9

Old Yharnam 45.8 38.3 36.5 31.0
Respawn at Old Yharnam 53.5 44.7 39.0 36.8
Return to Hunter's Dream from Old Yharnam 12.1 11.1 10.4 9.6

In short SSHD is better than 7200 by a bit, but relatively even compared to stock and SSD gaps so: Stock<<<<<7200<<SSHD<<<<<<<SSD

There is not enough data to judge. You will want games like GTA, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Witcher 3 to test. It's also not just load times but also stuttering as you stream in game assets.

Proper not bottlenecked SSD support would mean huge improvements across the board. Not just for certain games. That is what people were hoping for. Sticking an SSD into this is not worth it more than it was sticking it in a standard PS4.

I already have a 1TB SSD waiting to go in, just like my OG PS4. Too bad the gains aren't greater, but I'll take any lowering of loading etc I can.

So is there a consensus on the best cheapest 2TB drive? I assume it doesn't "officially" support higher and i don't care if a game is loading 1-5 seconds faster i just want to double my drive space.

Firecuda it is if I can ever find one in srock again.

Cheapest would be a 2TB HDD that you remove from the external casing yourself. Should cost about $70.

Like one of those seagate backup plus ones? I will snag one at BB tomorrow when i pick up my PS4 pro.

Yep. You want the Seagate 2TB Backup Plus Slim external drive. It's a little tricky to get the hard drive out without bending the (flimsy metal) case, but you'll save like $20 versus buying the bare drive it contains (a 2tb Seagate Samsung Spinpoint M9T) online and they definitely stock them at BB, Target, etc.
