In your opinion, the oldest game that has yet to be outclassed in its genre?

A lot of people love Ori and Hollow Knight and whatever, but man, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is just sublime.
Castlevania Symphony of the night is the right answer... Some people would probably fight you because they prefer Super Metroid (which is a pretty good game, and a legit contender, but it doesn't play as well, and probably because of the storage limitations doesn't look nearly as good as it should).

NFL 2K5 is still the best football game ever created.

Nascar Racing Season 2003 is by far the best Nascar game ever, it still has a huge community.

In the 4x genre, still waiting for a better enemy AI than what Simtex pulled off in Master of Orion and Master of Magic. After awhile it actually kinda killed my interest in the genre because every time I bought a new 4x game I was comparing it against these two and... yeah.

If there is another game like that I am not aware. Was a fantastic take on a strategy in the SW universe. Made the later RTS game look like crap in comparison.

After thinking for a bit, and seeing so many wrong opinions, I had to drop some actual truth here. It's Heros of Might and Magic III.

Man, that's tough. I agree it's way better than 3. But the ragdolls added in 2 makes me want to replay it slightly more. Hmm
I must admit, Max Payne 2 with the Cinema mod 2.0 did take up quite a bit of my time back in the day..

But it'll always be the first that wins hands down for me. The gritty story, the opening in the Payne residence, the music, the narration

It was just perfect. I love a good revenge yarn at the best of times and that game just done it for me

A bit like the original Painkiller. They cant be beat.

Most of those aren't games. Which Mario, Zelda, etc? And some of the franchises you list are even in the same genre as other franchises you listed - Mario/Sonic, Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter, etc.

You are bad at this.

Skyrim. The combat is crap but sometimes I wish I had passed on 90% of the open world games since and just replayed skyrim over and over. It's in the feels, you are there and you are free.
I respect your opinion :p

I got a lot more out of Morrowind, though it is really dated more, if you immerse in it then the feeling of discovery and progress is intense.. And the environments were much more creative i thought

There is simply no game like Super Mario 64. Every possible competitor doubled on the collectathon part but none of them offered the same gameplay. In no 3D platformer/exploration game the character can do what Mario can do in that game, not even in subsequent 3D Marios. It's really a one-of-a-kind game.
Banjo kazooie is a better mario 64

Not only is it still not outclassed in the genre of western 3D open world RPGs, but also in its own series (and never will be).

Who said its one per genre?

Resident Evil is a survival horror, Silent Hill opened the doors for psychological horror.

You are bad at interpretation of genres and sub-genres.

Of course Zelda is in, but i don't want to keep typing the entire day.

I just put A FEW games that defined genres.

2d platformers. beat em ups, point and click games and "pure" FPS games all peaked in the 90s.

Extreme sports games never got any better than peak THPS 2 through Underground.

Not really sure what Deus Ex could be described as, but the original is still unsurpassed.

Castlevania sotn\ super metroid for 2d metroidvania
Ff6 for 2d rpg
Parasite eve 1 for action rpg with a mix of turns and real time combat
Fear for fps with good IA
Psi ops the mindgate conspiracy for the better use of telecynetic power and physics during combat in a tps

You are too young, Zelda, Sonic, Mario, etc. were once one game (Well Mario means Super Mario Bros. there was another Mario game, but nobody in their right mind talked about it).

Banjo-Kazooie was my favourite game on the N64. I always liked it more than Mario 64.

This has nothing to do with the fact that the skills required in BK are vastly different. What you see speedrunners do in Mario 64 is factually impossible in BK. Character movement and level design is night and day.

Other games in the same genre did the exploration and collectathon better. None plays and controls like Mario 64.

They were? I thought they came out with 5 games at once.

So, then, he must mean Super Mario Bros is the best platformer ever and nothing has improved on it still?

I'm older than Mario, Zelda, etc, btw. Not that you need to be to know "Mario" and "Zelda" aren't single video games, but referring to franchises.

Burnout 3 Takedown is still the greatest arcade racer of all time, closely followed by Ridge Racer Type 4.

Silent Hill 2 is the greatest survival horror game ever made (even tho it's far from the scariest, I must admit that...).

Castlevania SOTN is still the greatest Metroidvania ever, despite worthy competition.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the greatest 3D plateformer ever.

Tetris is 2D puzzle perfection, of course.

Whereas Portal 2 is peak 3D puzzle.

Chrono Trigger is the GOAT of J-RPG. The greatest guys in the industry at the peak of their career, what could go more right than that.

In the realm of the shmup genre, I would have to give a four-way tie between these:

Espgaluda- 2003 (for the gentlest skill curve from "rookie" to "superplayer", due to the potential manipulation of the kekusei mechanic)

Dodonpachi Daioujou- 2002 (my namesake, so I'm biased, but this is for the OCD perfectionist seeking the perfect route)

Battle Garegga- 1996 (for the masochist who wants to decipher the most complex shmup rank system of all time)

Gradius V- 2004 (for the hori fan, a masterpiece of design and difficulty that includes a directional shot)

None of these have been surpassed. Consolation prizes go to SKONEC's Psyvariar 2, to Taito's RayForce and Darius Gaiden, and to Treasure's two other shmup masterpieces Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun.

Every time i'm reminded of this game i have an uncontrollable itch to install and play. There's a reason why Heroes of Might & Magic III: Complete Edition (GOG version with mods, NOT the "HD" Edition on Steam which sucks) has remained in my top 5 most favorite video games of all times for .. at least a decade now. It's an unrivaled masterpiece that's as 'ageless' as chess.

- The combination of the killer soundtrack and the city created may be never beated

Mario 65
-Still the gold standard for platformers

Sonic on the Mega Drive (Speedy Platformer with great Artstyle)

Puyo Puyo (Competitive Puzzle game that even they can't better)

Kingdom Hearts 1 (I feel the sequels haven't balanced the Strategy and Action greatly)

Kirby's Adventure (Fun Platformer that plays around with what Kirby can do, I like the other games but this one feels the best)

Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal (Monster Raising RPG that had the perfect amount of Pokemon, Moves and innovations. The later games add too much and focus more on Competitiveness until they went the opposite way lately making it too easy)
