Killer Instinct announced for PC

More specifically, their software. If you have an Xbox One or Windows 10, you're going to spend money to buy games and applications. It doesn't matter to them where you use it, which is the purpose of cross-buy.

This strategy also applies to phones + tablets. Software is on everything.

If you decided you no longer need to invest in an Xbox because Killer Instinct got a PC port announced after two seasons, Microsoft wasn't sweating you in the first place, people.

This the number of posts saying they were only buying an Xbox for Killer Instinct seem disingenuous. KI is a launch title. It's been a year and a half. The game obviously wasn't pulling you THAT hard.

Basically, Microsoft's strategy is encouraging everyone to use their online services (i.e. make an account) regardless what device you use.

Now the bigger question arises: Does the game require Xbox Gold to play online?

Why would it? They tried once and it failed. Maybe 1% of PC gamers would pay for online, it's been free for too long.

and even then they'll probably need to bring Halo 5 and Gears 4 before people would entertain the idea of subbing for longer than 1 second.

Yeah and the gold on windows would only have microsoft games under it. Any third party will also release their game on steam/origin/gog which don't require you to pay to play online and thus everyone would just get their game there instead of giving microsoft the 30% cut from their store.

Maybe some people were waiting for the game to have a respectable amount of content.

Again. Wonder what that means for the future of Xbox subscriptions.

Xbox (the console) is a closed platform where another service provider (steam for example) is not competing with them so they can ask for the subscription fees. PC is an open platform and due to the competition they would never get away with it.

Why are so many people concerned that it will be Win 10 only???....Windows 10 is free people and its defo better than 8 and faster than 7 oh and don't forget DX12......so what's the issue here

I would entertain the idea of subscribing to something like "Windows 10 Live Gold" if they brought absolutely everything to PC day one. $60 per year to not ever have to own an X1 for exclusives? Yeah, I think I'd probably agree to that. It's never going to happen, though.

Got to ask yourself if MS decided to bring over Forza and Halo to the PC then how relevant will actually owning a XB1 actually be. I know this is great news for PC owners that GoW and KI are coming to PC but I can't help feel they are slowly killing the XB1.

I won't be surprised it the next incarnation of the Xbox won't be just a £100 app/platform/service for windows 11 and MS leave hardware behind

CCCCCC-COMBO BREAKER!!!!

Oh wow. Well, E3 2015 might as well be the last E3 to exist, because after this it's only downhill!

Edit: Cross buy and cross play and the 360/X1 sticks work? Shit!

Didn't think it was much good on Xbox One tbh, but then I never really had much nostalgia for this franchise to start with. I'll likely pass on the PC version also.

If nothing else though the seeming growing redundancy of Xbox One is interesting to observe.

Ha no Joke When I saw Cinder's retro costume I was ready to plop down the money for an xbone for this game. Seeing my favorite character from to this day my favorite fighting game of all time (KI 1) in a new game got me pretty excited. But I talked myself out of it. Getting a system for just one game just seemed like a waste. I've done it before though with KI Gold. Believe it or not that was the only game I ever Wanted to play on the N64. Ended up not keeping the system.

That aside I'm am pretty excited for this. Now there is really no need for me to have that X Box one

I'm probably in there day one. Kinda hope they port the arcade versions of Ki 1 and Ki 2 also.

Well no shit...it didn't launch as a complete game in most of our eyes with a roster that small and so little else. Its only recently with the completion of season 2 and story mode coming that the game felt worth going in for since it had grown so much. Plus going to PC potentially alleviates many stick expense worries that kept some on the fence. A lot of us wanted to play the title but it just hadn't become enough of a value yet to justify a console purchase.

Till now for a lot of us KI was the only exclusive worth considering an X1 for, but it just wasn't a big enough game to justify the console purchase. With this there's no reason for folks like me to keep riding the fence on the issue. Just not enough big name exclusives.

Let's be honest, most people here with a gaming PC who hadn't bought an Xbox One at this point weren't going to anyway.

This way they still get to sell you the game. It's pretty much a win-win situation as it increases the lifespan and playerbase of KI. Trying to spin it into some sort of XBONE is doooOOoomed story is dumb.

what was the price for you to jump in? last year during christmas they were super discounted so if you'd expect them to get any lower than that you'd be waiting years.
l only really wanted killer instinct none of the other games interested me really

I was one of those people. And as a huge fighting game fan and KI player from the 90s, yes it was. Sold my XB1 just a few weeks ago bc I couldnt justify keeping it only for KI.

Yes, there are other games and exclusives that I played around with here and there, but KI was the driving factor for me 100%.

Eh, maybe. In the end I think they just want all people, whether than want to play on laptops, desktops or in the living room, to be able to choose what they want. If that living room experience is best served with a closed box, then they'll have another closed box I guess Here's some quotes from Phil Spencer regarding this topic from Giant Bombs stream:

"I want to be able to play the games I want to play where I play them"

He doesn't subscribe to the mindset that you "Have to keep people from playing in certain places"

"Forcing people to buy something by excluding their choice doesn't feel right"

"We'll push through how some people see that we're betraying the Xbox Nation"

In the end more people on Live, more people in the Xbox ecosystem and more choice for gamers. I think that's their end goal.
If this is their goal that's awesome. Leveraging PC as an actual platform they care about, since they already hold *tons* of the Desktop gaming market and not just promising it over and over like usual, is radical.

Now that SteamOS is threatening Windows PC gaming to a degree, getting this competition will be fucking rad.

Most promising moves from MS in years.

i doubt it will be a w10 exclusive since they'd want to compete with sfv and mkx.
Probably some features will be missing on older OS
Game is not that advanced to require the latest technology

I am pretty sure this is W10 exclusive, they even have Win 10 in the announcement picture.

It's cross plat multiplayer which means it uses the new xbox live api in windows 10, which mean it's tied to the new storefront and xbox app. Gigantic and Fable gonna be the same.

never left the stone age
On second thought. If I have to pay to play this online you can keep it Microsoft

Has there been any word regarding this yet?

Posts like this should be prefaced with:
"I was never going to buy one anyway."

GAF should have a script that automatically replaces the text when detected.

Nobody (other than Troubled Bat) was really looking to get an Xbox One for Killer Instinct, yet still doesn't have one two years later. Either you'd get the console later for cheap because there are numerous other games you want to play, or you were just gonna port beg throughout the generation.

Awesome to see KI on PC

My thoughts last year were MS should bring over games and use their own store to bolster Windows. Don't have an issue with it.

Just hope they can bring Forza over but I expect Microsoft will do as little as possible. That's all they need to do really.

The Windows store and universal content is key to their future -- way more than xbox hardware is -- so I would not bet on them doing as little as possible

It would never kill the Xbox console to bring those and every game over. Plenty of people don't want to build PCs and would choose the cheaper, simpler system over the custom one.

Bringing all the games is best for everyone and best for business in the end. The player community would grow. We would have choice. MS would sell more games.

That's how I see it as well and Xbox Hardware has never been important, its software and subscriptions for Xbox but that pails into insignificance to Windows staying relevant

The thing is how far do MS keep going with the console? Right now I see them simply doing little bits to keep the gamers on Windows and DirectX and carrying on with the console stuff. I see some version of Forza coming, said that last year.

You saying they're going to do a lot more in the short term Bring Forza 6 to PC within a year? I just see them doing what they need to keep Windows gaming not go down another path in the long term, nip it in the bud if you will.

The far future, I see it all going into some form of PC, but that's way off.

It wouldn't kill the Xbox no. I'm not at all convinced that it would be best for their business though. Some users (such as myself) absolutely would drop the console for PC in this case, and on average per user those that do, are probably those that currently spend the most on their games and services. There are lots of things I give MS money for on Xbox that I possibly wouldn't be doing on PC.

Also, many game's communities shouldn't ever be combined. I bought Quake 3 on Dreamcast, and quickly found that it was a PC gamer's world in there.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
For people who have windows 7 or 8. If you are building a new PC you still have to pay for a new copy.

Windows 10 is a free upgrade, on all copies of Windows 7 and 8
if you get what I'm saying.
