LUNAR Remastered Collection launches April 18 (available both physically and digitally)

What time is it?
It would be nice to have the option - but I think the licensing is why it was retranslated on PSP if I'm not mistaken? So it's yet another translation, I think?

Vic Ireland was on a podcast and said that he reached out to offer his translation and never heard back. Let me see if I can find a link.

Here it is:

Well, that sucks. More options on ports/remasters like this is definitely what I desire. I wish anytime a game was ported/remastered like this, there was a sideloadable emulated version, or something like that, which was literally the original release.

I hope the new localization is solid.. but I'll be honest, I really just hope they'll be able to mod back the original translations and VO.

I'll be happy either way, really, but that would be ideal for me. I'm just glad to have these classics available on modern platforms again!

I dont understand where the vitriol for Vic/WD came from. I can see to an extent why people would be upset over changes to the script but this was also the early 90s and there wasn't much of a market in NA for these jrpgs. I grew up on WD games, one of my favorite aspects were the scripts. People bought these games because of the scripts.

Vic will always be a legend/pioneer to me, and he kind of blew up his career for the sake of bringing jrpgs to NA. If that isn't worthy of respect, what is?

Vic was a frequenter here by the way. He did post now and then and sometimes he would provide some insight about his relation to Sega and in particular Stolar. There was some bad blood and finally he moved his localizations to Sony.

I think WD did a tremendous job with their localizations and packaging. They brought some obscure games over like Thunderforce, Elemental Gearbolt etc. But Lunar, although you won't notice it until you play another original version, it was a bit altered so you had to grind more. I don't know why they felt the need to do this.

I respect what he's done but I've experienced his translations and I'd prefer to see something different.

Yeah, in the sense that these games wouldn't be coming over here - I'd take a Vic Ireland job over nothing for sure. And, I mean, it wasn't that bad. It added some unique charm to it - and we ended up getting a fresh translation later anyway, so !

Any reason he stopped posting that you know of? I remember he used to be around.

Yo, Lunartics, red pill me on Lunar.
A simp named Alex is down bad for his adopted sister, Luna who gets kidnapped by a Magic Supremacist named Ghalleon who hates Dragons and the guy who masters them. Alex goes across the world and is turned on when Luna gets some clothes from hot topic. Nall when not using his big mouth to talk shit turns into an airplane and takes them to a poverty laden area of the world called Russia. Kyle is fighting with his girlfriend, Jessica and Nash, the effeminate lady body is trying to get Mia to pay attention to him. Like a sane person, Mia ignores Nash because his hair is better then hers. Also Alex goes around the world looking for pictures of his sister in uncompromising positions along with all the other girls in his party. Victor Ireland also made a great instruction manual for this game. Which caused the Playstation release to be delayed by half a year and caused me to replay the demo disc multiple times.

This is one of the best posts I've read on here in a long time :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Pre-ordered a copy from Amazon but apparently I don't get it until August. That kinda sucks. I hope it's an error on their part. It can't be in that high demand can it?

I'm 42 dude.
Like i said, i never was a Sega guy more like Nintendo back in the days.
So the elephant in the room is that these games may not shine for others who didn't experience them back in the Sega CD / PS1 days. I think the games still hold up, but in the same way that people who play Chrono Trigger now for the first time don't understand the hype, people aren't going to be blown away by this.

Lunar 1 is a very classic good vs evil anime story, Lunar 2 is a little more nuanced and mature, characters are a little more gray and the story is better because of it.

That's actually a very interesting point you bring up and its true. Unfortunately people today can't tell why the games were so important to us back in the days.
I only take GTA 3 as an example, nothing special from todays viewpoint but back then it was a revelation to me.
That goes for many older games unfortunately.

Lunar was just a very well done JRPG. Its battle system wasn't as engaging as FF or anything, but it did the job and it had decent speed. I liked the world building, the peak 2D graphics and the overall atmosphere. Cutscenes looked good at the time. Overall the presentation was very good, a SNES style RPG dressed up with good quality anime scenes, voice acting etc. Working Designs also elevated it with the very unique box this game shipped in, hardcover booklet, map etc.

Lunar 2 was simply bigger, and in my opinion better.

Game Arts was really good at the time. They obviously didn't have the grandeur of Square, but Grandia 1, 2 and Lunar 1 and 2 are classics from their era and while Lunars gameplay was nothing special (it was a 16-bit Sega CD series originally), especially Grandia 2 has combat thats still among the top.

Yeah honestly Lunar 1 uses practically every shounen anime/JRPG cliche in the book. It released at a time when anime + JRPGs were still these niche exotic things, and when games with heavy emphasis on character interactions, voice acting, and cutscenes were very rare.

Seems like it’ll hit much differently in 2025. It’ll be be interesting to see how it’s received by people playing it for the first time.

It should be pointed out that those great instruction manuals for both of the Lunar games are hardcover books with like 100 pages.
