So the elephant in the room is that these games may not shine for others who didn't experience them back in the Sega CD / PS1 days. I think the games still hold up, but in the same way that people who play Chrono Trigger now for the first time don't understand the hype, people aren't going to be blown away by this.
Lunar 1 is a very classic good vs evil anime story, Lunar 2 is a little more nuanced and mature, characters are a little more gray and the story is better because of it.
Lunar was just a very well done JRPG. Its battle system wasn't as engaging as FF or anything, but it did the job and it had decent speed. I liked the world building, the peak 2D graphics and the overall atmosphere. Cutscenes looked good at the time. Overall the presentation was very good, a SNES style RPG dressed up with good quality anime scenes, voice acting etc. Working Designs also elevated it with the very unique box this game shipped in, hardcover booklet, map etc.
Lunar 2 was simply bigger, and in my opinion better.
Game Arts was really good at the time. They obviously didn't have the grandeur of Square, but Grandia 1, 2 and Lunar 1 and 2 are classics from their era and while Lunars gameplay was nothing special (it was a 16-bit Sega CD series originally), especially Grandia 2 has combat thats still among the top.
