RE9 is going to be so interesting. The remakes were all safe bets and, credit where credit is due, Capcom did good with them, even RE3Make in essence. RE7 worked out well too, since they finally gave people what they wanted from RE again: proper horror. RE8 was an okay game, but more importantly was able to ride the success Capcom accumulated with Remakes+7.
RE9 is really open season again, anything goes in theory. I'd suggest if they'd go with something like 8 (first person, action-y, not lots to see for fans of the franchise) the response will be lukewarm, at best. To straight out "abandon" the first person angle, when they build up a fanbase with two whole dedicated mainline games, doesn't seem that sensible to me either though, even if I hate first person. And no, hybrid is not a decent option, never was and never will be.
Personally I'd like them to continue down the RE2 Remake way. Relatively dense, close spaces, third person. A somewhat tight narrative (as opposed to 8 or 6) within the familiar umbrella-verse. But I'm honestly not sure if that would sell the quantities that Capcom would like, sadly I see them going for bigger, broader and possibly even (once again) more mainstream.
