Is it me or is this game looking uglier? Like a downgrade of sorts? Looks more cartoony and lower poly than before. I dunno. Something looks off.
The gist of it - based on rumors and theories - is this:

NRS was working on Injustice 3 for two years, then Zaslav basically called them to stop working on the game and work on an MK game, because WB was/is going bankrupt and needed a game which would sell 10 million copies instead of 2. So the devs stopped working on INJ3, tried to salvage every asset they already worked on and transfer it to MK1, which was basically done in 2 years+INJ3 saved assets.

This is why the vs animations as the fight loads reminds you of the clashes in Injustice 2.

This is why Shao Kahn has an axe instead of a hammer and a vastly different look (he was supposed to be Steppenwolf of DC comics)
image.png

This is why the characters look more cartoony and comic-book/mobile looking (it was probably the art direction for INJ3, probably to look less real and more comic book)
image.png

This is why the game was so rushed that characters have 1 slot to change gear, instead of 3 like in MK11.

This is why the game was so rushed that they didn't even have time to fix the character select screen and had one which was a bland '+' that did absolutely nothing.
image.png

This is why the game has almost no single player modes except Invasion, which is the most asinine MK game mode I ever played in my entire life (everything about it screams 'tedious').

Between all that, the character retcons which completely changed their identities, resulting in moronic moves like retconning the biggest rivalry of the IP (Scorpion / Sub-Zero), turning 95% of the cast into good guys, the multiverse horseshit, characters looking as bland, boring and inoffensive as they possibly can - which is an insult to the MK ideology since this was one of the IPs responsible for the government creating age ratings for games - and tons of other bad ideas (kameo system), this is the game which turned MK from my favorite IP alongside Resident Evil, into an IP which I literally don't give a fuck about.

And I am a guy who wanted to see Havik more than anyone. When you get him a Big Bad role in a story expansion and I can't wait for the fucking Story Mode to end because it makes me feel physically sick, you realized you fucked up.

So yeah, they kinda fucked up on this one. A LOT.

Everything you wrote was in line with what i've heard as well and you laid it out perfectly so that it lines up with what were actually seeing/have seen since it came out. NRS needs to get away from WB before they do another MK or the series as we have known it the last 30+ years is gone forever.

I dunno man, i thought mk 11 kind of sucked as well, and didn't like the direction they were going towards, nicko above pretty much outlined it perfectly. the game feels more like a marvel movie than a mortal kombat game. The story is horrible, the atmosphere is goofy, characters look like power rangers, and i dont know how you manage to have less content than the game before. Then theres all the mtx dlc rip off crap. What a shame.

I've been messing around with some mk mugens lately, honestly to me they're way more fun than what nrealm/wb have pushed out the last few years.

Still so sad about this game. The MK series in general, it can be better, and it should be.

Bums me out that they always do these collabs that speak to me as an 80's kid, but game just hasn't clicked with me since 9.

This Arnie impression is hilarious to me, lol.

So... child molester Freddy Kreuger in MK9 spoke to you but Rambo, Robocop, and T-800 in MK11 did not?

I am super bummed that Injustice 3 never materialized. Mortal Kombat 1 feels redundant by comparison.

There are a lot of MK fans who feel the same way. Ever since MK got more politically correct and lost its edge, numerous arcade/3d era MK fans have been pissed off.

It's sad to see a game which made a name for itself by provoking now doing its darnest to not provoke anyone.

I have played MK9 recently and it does not play nearly as well as MKX and MK11. I understand the story and fan service was better received, but mechanically it was not good even for its time.

Lmao, nice try. I couldn't care less about Freddy, honestly. But I absolutely loved how MK9 played. I went from LOVING MK in 9, to immediately losing interest in X because it became so much more stiff. The saddest part is the DLC characters in that were honestly some of my favorite characters and IPs ever (Jason, Xeno, and Predator). Hell, Leatherface was pretty cool too.

Also love Robocop and T-800, but the gameplay in 11, while slightly better than X (to me) is still nowhere near 9. MK1 is more or less the same as MK11 to me. Somethings feel slightly better, some not so much.

I just really loved how 9 played, and I doubt we'll ever get to that again, but I'd like to think we will. If not something better.

MK9 was plenty stiff itself unless you played the handful of top tiers in the intended manner. It still baffles me how the series peaked in terms of fluidity and mechanics in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
