Majority of people think that MKXL was the best 'recent' MK game (since 9 and onwards). The problem with MK is that NRS lacks the talent to make them truly competitive. The old games were never meant to be for tournaments and whatnot, they were meant to be dumb fun. Now NRS tries to pretend they're in the same league (gameplay wise) as Capcom and Bandai and that is painfully delusional.I have played MK9 recently and it does not play nearly as well as MKX and MK11. I understand the story and fan service was better received, but mechanically it was not good even for its time.
Another thing that pisses off the fans is the inconsistency of the gameplay. Ever since MK 5, not a single character had the same gameplay / combo patterns throughout the games. When you get an MK game, you have no idea whether Sub-Zero is going to be a zoner, a rushdown character or a grappler. All their combos are done from scratch, while on games like Street Fighter, there is pattern familiarity. Ryu will play like Ryu throughout all SF games, and fans know what to expect when they get their hands on him in a new SF game. What MK is doing is pissing a lot of fighting game fans.
Oh, he's meant to look like Arnold. He even has someone pretending to sound like him. This is clearly an incompetence issue. How many Gen Z you think know him? This is a way to avoid paying royalties.
