Report: Mortal Kombat 1 Year 3 content has been cancelled including a story expansion

this, but unironically.

and also made by a completely different studio, preferably one that actually knows how to make fighting games that don't feel like every character has a stick up their ass, and don't feel like your controller is broken due to how unresponsive everything feels.

So I'm not the only one then that felt like the controls were unresponsive or broken. I bounced off of MK1 hard as a result and don't think I'll ever return to the series.

I played all the parts, after 11 I lost interest in the series, as it seemed to me then they took the game somewhere in the wrong direction, something disappeared from the game. After that I managed to play MK1 at an exhibition before it went on sale, and I immediately realized that I would skip this part right away, in the end I never bought it. Now reading this news I realized that I did the right thing =)

It was slowly downhill after MK9, I dunno why they made the game progressively more wooden and stiff/clunky after MK9; they probably saw the popularity of Injustice and figured they'd draw more people to MK if they "slowed" it down to similar levels.
I loved MK9, MK10 was alright, but MK11 I couldn't play more than just the story, it controls like absolute shit, put me off getting MK1 without a heavy discount.

I recently got MK1 inc the expansion. Great fun glad i got it..

Didnt give a fuck about that weird boardgame mode.. but the campaign was great fun.. currently playing the fembot extra dlc story.. still great.. the dlc baiting for the old skins is fucking disgusting tho.. glad mk11 complete is like a tenner and it has all the retro skins i want.. for freeee.

My fave still is X and that game is only a fiver

Yeah, the campaign is really the only thing worth playing IMO. I just wish the mechanics and game itself was, well, better, lol. The game just had absolutely no staying power. You beat the campaign and... that's it. I tried the Konquest mode, but it didn't take long to burn out on that.

They need to go back to the drawing board. I played through MK9 story mode recently on steam deck and it’s still such a classic. They nailed the tone of the old games so well. From MKX onward it’s all felt like you asked Joss Whedon to make a Mortal Kombat movie with Marvel actors.

that's MK in a nutshell.

it has been varying degrees of unresponsive and stiff over the 3 decades it existed, but not a single game in the entire series ever actually felt good to play. especially in comparison with each entry's direct competition out of japan.

MK1 is the first game in the series where the attack and movement animations aren't 90% mindbogglingly awful at least... now it's only like 30% of them.

Good. Stop holding back content to be sold piecemeal later on. Like Ubisoft, these companies are starting to see that the name alone is not guaranteed to sell anymore. Star Wars, Assassin's Creed, Mortal Kombat...all popular franchises in gaming and the pop culture universe and yet they are fallible when you fuck them up with greed and oversaturation.

Hell yeah, dude. I have MK9 and the MK Trilogy installed on my Steam Deck. Both are amazing on the go.

And I agree with you about the tone shift from MKX onwards. I bought MKX on Xbox One and I just couldn't get into it. The whole vibe was off...

Aren’t they robots?

Anyways, I wasn’t aware fighting games had stories per say. Learn new things every day.

Wow that's pretty big news. Mortal Kombat has fallen off hard.

I didn't buy MK1 because the character designs were trash and it doesn't have the MK vibe I love. I'll stick with the classics that don't have bloated modes locked behind online connectivity.
TBH I think it was just bad timing for MK1. Tekken 8 was clearly the better game this go around, SF6 was solid too.

IMO they need to make something more in the 3rd space. Beat em up , 3rd person action, etc

DForce

NaughtyDog Defense Force
Omni-Man, Peacemaker, Homelander, Conan, T-1000, Ghostface....

This isn't Mortal Kombat.

I don't blame Ed Boon and his creative team for putting all of these non-Mortal Kombat characters in the game, I blame Warner Bros.

So... Can I get Injustice 3 now?

I don't think so, this series has always had sales lower than MK. Actually, that's probably why it was decided to make a new part of MK right away, skipping Injustice. If they can't sell MK, then they won't risk it with DC, especially considering the fact that they don't have to pay anything for MK, and they will have to give up a significant part of the profit for DC and the use of its characters.
Here everything may end up with WB simply selling them to someone, because WB has huge problems with the gaming division. + About 2 years ago Tencent showed genuine interest in this division =)

You dodged a bullet IMO, so good call, lol.

It just really sucked as a Reptile main. I was so happy he was returning. Love his moveset too. But everything else is just so... ugh, lol. I mean, whoever thought that new mode was a great idea deserves a slap on the hand. It felt like something from a free to play mobile game. Not a full priced AAA title.
I really love MK in general and last one I bought was MK11. I played the trial through deluxe of MK1 and it felt a bit off. It seemed to also have less blood/gore when normally fighting? I dunno, the expansion including DLC characters is so expensive on top of base game and I hate how the extra content in the premium physical edition apart from base game is locked behind a DLC code so you can't pick it up or sell second-hand.

I gave up on MK11, beat the main story but never got motivated to bother with the DLC. Is Injustice 2 still worth playing? I'm not really invested in the DC universe but some of the characters I'm a fan of.

Well, and this may sound crazy, but how about not charging $50 to $60 for DLC and give the option to buy characters separately instead of in a pack where you don't give a fuck about most the characters in it.

Loved this series, but I have only played the latest ones for the goofy story and to see some fatalities. Funnily enough, I started being grossed out more by microtransactions like "easy fatalities" than any gore.

It's not hard to imagine why the story DLC failed. It was price at like £40, which is basically the same price as the main game, and the content you get for it is laughable. Let me guess, though, it's somehow our fault for not accepting bullshit anymore.

Warner Bros has been so bad for gaming overall. Some great games, yes, but badly impacted by greed and laziness.

I was thinking something like this would happen since they're already repeating seasons on their invasion mode.

The story got a bit too stupid even for me. They did the whole multiverse bull shit when people are tired of it. Still been pretty fun to play...well sometimes. As long as assholes online stop using Johnny Cage who is just broken.

  • DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 has reportedly been cancelled.
  • Poor sales of the first expansion, Khaos Reigns, are being blamed for the cancellation.
  • If plans for the DLC had gone ahead, it would have apparently included another story expansion and a third Fighter Pass.
As spotted by Insider Gaming, FateUnknown made this claim on Reddit, sharing the details with disappointed fans.

They go on to claim that the reason for the cancellation is that Khaos Reigns sold poorly. Sales figures for this expansion are not publicly available, so it's unclear if this fell below projections.

Karma for Warner bros.

I grew up playing and loving MK. MK2 was my favorite arcade game, and I even bought an Ultimate MK3 arcade machine back in the day for my den. I stopped playing around the Gamecube era as I didn't like the switch to 3d fighting. I should have saw the writing on the wall back then as I didn't like that one character that made fart and puke attacks and thought it was getting stupid.

I recently tried MK11 and then MK1 and I was shocked by how shit they are. WTF is this shit? This isn't MK anymore. It's a micro transaction riddled shell of its former self. Picking styles of combat, tag team bullshit, fatalities that are now so ridiculous that they are just annoying to sit through, a story so stupid it's not worth investing in, mini-games, turning favorite characters into troons and gays, I mean wtf.

Warner Brothers or Netherrealm, who's to blame for this? It's a travesty.
Answer = Warner bros.

Mortal Kombat really needs a reboot and to start again.
This time for sure! lmao

Netherrealm.

I haven't played it. Was this too many years in a row of them thinking of Mortal Kombat?
Personally I think so. They should have just made the fighting game full of horror movie icons that anyone can tell they desperately want to make(based on their guest stars from the last few MK games).

Well that is unfortunate as it is the only good modern Western fighting game franchise. I know some love Killer Instinct but I can't enjoy it and MK was only fun mechanically in Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate.

Giving your product a numbered designation, and that designation being '1' when it isn't the first, is always a very, very stupid thing to do.

The game was a pile of shit. Horrible performance, limited roster, microtransactions everywhere, it was just garbage. AND it looked doubly horrible when compared with SF6.

I have Street Fighter VI and it looks worse than Street Fighter V a lot of the time. It is not just the art style, but the cheaply made assets and poor optimization.

My kids and me had fun with MK1 for a bit, the expansion is ok and i kinda liked the female Cyborgs in the end. Nothing super special but the Story was pretty well done for a fighting game.
Would give it a 6.5/10 its worth 20$ i think when you play it with somebody else on the couch.

I think SF6 looks good but there are things that drag it down like you mentioned. It's kinda soft image, lacks HDR, etc

What I can't understand is people saying MK1 doesn't look good....graphics are top notch

What pisses me off with MK1 is the amount of stupid guest characters and making the two coolest looking characters into female versions who don't look badass at all. One of the most woke devs who's constantly disregarding the wants of fans.

Also, the supers in this game (and mk11) take what feels like forever to play out. Does anyone enjoy being interrupted by 15 second long cutscenes in every round? I despise this mechanic and how devs think people want that in a fighting game.
