I always use instant on for Xbox because aside from the odd issue I said above, no issues at all. Though I do tend to install a game via disk with the system on, cancel the update, and then once the game is installed re start the update download. Then I can “turn it off” knowing the magic is going on. Otherwise if I do both at the same time, it seems to have an issue and the download goes crazy slow? It’s really weird.

On PS4 however I turn off instant on, because I can’t stand that huge massive orange light that glows. It defeats the point for me.

Not if you turn off Suspended apps.
It not keep RAM active.

BTW suspended apps were added late... the Rest Mode didn't have this option at begining.
That is why with suspended apps off it uses way lower energy.

uhm yeah:

Default "Rest mode" power draw: 10W
Estimated average annual cost: $10.64

How to turn it off: Hold down the power button on the system for seven seconds (wait for the two beeps) when turning off the system, or choose "[Turn Off PS4]" (rather than "[Rest Mode]") when closing the system using the PlayStation button on the DualShock 4 controller. The LED on top of the system will turn off completely if you've done this correctly—if it's a steady or blinking orange, you're drawing power in Rest Mode.

If you don't want to eliminate all the benefits of Rest Mode, you can still save some power by turning off specific bits of functionality in the "Power Save" settings menu. Here's a rough estimate of what each function contributes to that 10W power draw (certain combinations will be lower than simply adding Wattages would predict):

  • "Supply Power to USB Ports": 6.3W
  • "Stay Connected to the Internet"/"Enable Turning On of PS4 from Network": 2.4W
  • "Keep Application Suspended": 1.2W

Surprisingly, the power draw for keeping the USB ports on applies even when nothing is plugged in to those USB ports. Plugging in an uncharged DualShock 4 controller draws an additional 5 Watts on top of that. If you still want to recharge your controller after a session without wasting long-term energy on the USB ports, you can choose to disable the USB ports after three hours in the settings menu.

Rest Mode with USB on draws 6.3W
that is half what the Xbox One draws when set to Instant On... lul what?
and that is WITHOUT the controller actually drawing power, that is only to keep that system active.

again, the Xbox One in "power saver" draws 1 watt with no controller connected.

EDIT: 0.3 watts https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013...e-console-less-than-a-living-room-revolution/

xCould, GamePass, no next-gen exclusives, and smart delivery might result into more mediocre games as a final results. Won't even throw a penny to bet on Xbox getting GOTY next gen.

implying that GOTY awards have any real value... (hint: they don't)

I know there is zero chance of this happening, but this is a good thread that we can all use to discuss the next gen consoles. Can we at least try and keep console warz out of this thread, just this one thread please.

Page 1133:

So it has come to this..... since specs can't be disputed right now, people are bickering over power save mode and controller power.... you learn something new everyday.

Ok we're indeed fucked.

I can understand what you mean here. How much more could go into a Pro. But what do you make of what @VFXVeteran said?

I don't doubt Sony's planning a PS5 Pro, but even he said he isn't sure it's coming at launch of base model. Personally I doubt it'll come out at launch, for the reasons already mentioned. At the same time, I don't have Sony's plans sitting at my desk (or any insider sources sadly), so there's that.

Plus, again, there's the yields question as well as the split between Base and Pro, if they were to both happen at launch. Base PS5 would still be the root target for devs, the Pro would just be there fore upscaling resolution and framerates. I doubt Sony would go even 50/50 on the base and Pro models, nor would they give equal allotments in all the territories they have to cover. It's different from what MS is doing with XSX because (imo) Lockhart's going for a very different market segment and just happens to be XSX-compatible. They probably aren't even launching Lockhart this year so they can maximize production numbers and distribution of XSX.

I love how this is posed as a "gotcha" post but shows how somebody doesn't understand the benefits of rebooting a pc.

What an idiot.

yeah for real... like what?
and with modern NVMe SSDs rebooting a PC is so damn fast, why would you not cold boot your PC at that point? literally less than 5 seconds to boot and insert my pin on Win 10.

Quality games with no microtransactions and Xcloud\Gamepass can coexist, but it depends on MS. Right now they are giving big AAA exclusives at D1 for pennies because that's their main advantage, if they go 50\50 with Sony (hope so) there will be less safrificial strategies.
Don't know how smart delivery could be bad.

Bad for developers, not for us. That will result into more losses and less quality from them going forward.

they do. Game of the year usually is a comercial sucess.

and that affects me as someone looking for a game I like how exactly?
do you mainly listen to music that has tons of MTV music awards? because that's literally what all mainstream GOTY awards are... MTV music award esque popularity contests.

I just said they do have value and that's it.

Okay, I can understand all that (again). I guess it's a wait and see.

They should just make local shops Sony approved to upgrade existing shells of Consoles and upgrade them every 3 or so years. Futuristic stuff.

Meh, if you put some AAA the first day maybe. If after one or two years, a commercially dead game might get some money, I think it has good sides if handled well. That's why, according to Sony, forget exclusive at D1 on PS Now. Quality has a cost bitches, or prepare microtransactions rocket to go the surprise mechanics moon.

PS Now is the smarter approach, although it sounds inferior to Gamepass. Make it too good, and it'll backfire on your face afterwards. Probably that's why all the travels Philly did to Japan had nothing other than tourism trying to force his philosophy.

Yep.

Things done in a cold boot that aren't done in a warm boot are that letting power completely discharge from the motherboard and reset all components which clears your pc of temporary memory. A cold boot also runs a power on self test on the hardware. Most tech supports issues won't ask for a cold boot but there are times when it's necessary.
