Key Points
  • Nintendo on Tuesday reported weaker-than-expected top and bottom results for its fiscal third quarter, slashing its forecast for the Switch console ahead of the release of its succesor.
  • Nintendo said it now expects to sell 11 million units of its current Switch console, down from a previously-reduced estimate of 12.5 million units.
  • Nintendo last month teased the Switch 2 in a trailer showing off the hardware, with investors and fans eagerly-awaiting more details.

Will be interesting to see if there is any adjustments made prior to Q4 close based on Switch 2 sales.

Switch is unlike anything we've seen in terms of video games hardware sales. 11 million in it's ninth year is just crazy all around. Switch 2 is going to be such a massive juggernaut it will be hard to comprehend. We're witnessing history here.

11 million in year 9 of an underpowered tablet is crazy. Xbox sold 3 million last year right?

It's until the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.

Does it eclipse ps2 this year?

Or does Sony find a few million extra ps2 sales under the sofa?

I thought DS was already tied with PS2 both with roughly 155 million sold but then Sony was like, "oh shit we forgot to look on the back of page 6."

But fiscal year 2025 ends in March 2025 so there is no way it passes 160m this (f) year. Realtime 2025, with a price drop to $99 on the lite and $199 on the OG Switch, I could see them getting very close to 160, by EOY March 2026.

i am doubtful, the DS and Wii dropped like a rock the moment a new console was announced/released. 6-7M is more probable imo. Especially if Switch 2 comes out in the summer, unless they make a lot of cross gen games, and drop the switch to $199 i don't see 11 M happening.

As I said in another thread it's nuts that they will reduce forecasts instead of reducing the price. I guess they see the current price as making enough to cover the 1.5 million "lost" sales that would have probably easily existed at a lower cost.

I don't think we'll see $100 price cuts. Switch 2 plays Switch software and Nintendo will want to move the bulk of their manufacturing resources and consumer base toward the Switch 2 as swiftly as possible.

They are Currently at 9.54 million shipped after Q3, which means they only anticipate shipping 1.46 million in the current quarter (January 1st to March 31st). For the next fiscal year around 6 million seems realistic, if they want more (especially with Switch 2 releasing) they need some hefty price cuts otherwise there is no reason to buy an OG Switch if it is only around $100 cheaper than Switch 2, it needs to be $200 cheaper.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
155m reported march 2012. PS2 discontinued March 2013. 5m during its last year = 160. Not that hard to understand is it?
I find it strange that it took so long for them to address it. Feels rather weird. You can believe whatever you want. I personally don't buy into it..

There's no room for opinions here. It's a fact. Look it up yourself and you'll see. It reminds me of the insomniac leak and how surprised people were at how well some of their games sold. Sony are random as hell when it comes to giving updates on sales data. They don't have to publically update on everything though.

We’ll know after this next year if it will or won’t.

But if 3ds sold 10 million after switch launched, surely there’s a good chance

I'd say this year is unlikely. Late 2026 or 2027 maybe.
Under Promise and Over Deliver…it’s the Nintendo Way!!
They did the opposite though.

It's because after March 2012 Sony combined console and handheld sales. In the following fiscal year Sony sold 16.5 million PS2s and PS3s. Sony always knew how many PS2s they sold, we didn't until the Jim Ryan interview.

It's not a case of "believe". That's what the PS2 sold.

In this case, technically that is correct.

Selling over 10 million units for fy24 (ending on March 31st 2025) is an achievement and is enough context for their shareholders not to care about that miss (as a shareholder this is only my opinion).

It would be a decent, and doesn't matter too much with Switch 2 on the horizon.

But they still had to downgrade their hardware forecast twice, and that's never a good thing.
