I really hope the Switch sells well over 160 million (165+ish) just so people can't even argue about it anymore. Sony gave a definitive number on that last produced PS2, so as long as Nintendo can go above that, then that should be the end of it... Right?

Correct

PlayStation 2 had 13 years and the DVD player. Can’t we compare life time game sales? Are there any numbers? I ran it through AI and it estimates 1.12 billion games sold on PS2 compared to 1.35 billion games on Switch.

Nintendo Switch game sales are only for physical release games, it didn't take digital-only games into account like PS2 and PS4. Switch total software is likely beyond 2 billion at this point.

Interesting. The AI couldn’t find a source for that
1537 million for PS2, Switch has a 50/50 chance to beat it. By March 31st 2025 Switch will be around 1390 million software, just 147 million behind.

What on earth were people using their PSPs for?

Piracy destroyed PSP's software sales.
The PSP was like a mini computer though. You could browse the web, chat, use it as a portable music player, watch movies, use messenger, and ao much more. I knew people who had it who never bought a single game for it. They used it like an iPhone without the cellular functionality.

I don’t think piracy is necessarily the answer. The PS1 is as easy to pirate as it gets, yet it sold almost 3x as many games as the PSP.

The Switch gave the Zelda franchise the sales it always deserved. But to be honest all of Nintendo's franchises took advantage of the Switch sales effect.

Digital versions of packaged software are included in the software total. Games which are digital only are not included in the software total.
Where says that?? Nintendo Japan site state this…

That's talking about digital revenue, which also includes NSO and DLC/MTX.

For software unit sales, go to page 23 of their most recent briefing and the note says:

"Software sales units include both packaged and downloadable versions of software, and do not include download-only software or add-on content."

I think that’s for the forecast…

The final column is the software unit forecast. The first three columns are software unit sales that have actually happened.
I know, but they clearly state in the sell in graph this… and i find strange that note is only in the forecast page, also doesn’t make any sense leave the digital only titles out of the report when the quantity is massive on the Eshop. If i am wrong and digital only downloads are not counted, games sales can easily pass the 2 billion then, but still doesn’t make sense to me.

The four games listed there include digital sales as they are also available physically.

And that page 23 isn't just the forecast page, it's the software unit sales page.

My understanding is that Nintendo doesn't want to inflate their software sales with cheap indie titles. Like Suika Game, which has sold over 7 million on Switch but only costs $2.99. They want to be able to compare Switch software sales to the software sales of their previous platforms.

So yes the total software sales will significantly higher than 1.3 billion.

Not just $2.99, but there are also $0.99 games. These cheap crappy games inflate unit sales but do nothing for revenue and also destroy comparisons with previous generations like you say.

Exactly, though Nintendo may have to change their stance if things like Black Myth abs Alan Wake 2 become more common.
Are you saying that Tetra Master on PlayOnline wasn't a hit?
To be honest I had not heard of that before! But yes I'm sure it sold millions :p

What on earth were people using their PSPs for?
When comparing NDS and PSP people usually look at the hardware sales.
However what's more telling were the software sales.
NDS sold nearly thrice the software numbers the PSP did.
Much more significative, knowing that Nintendo is a first-party driven platform holder while Sony is a third-party driven platform holder, is that NDS third-party software sales were roughly twice the ones for PSP.
For Sony that is a death sentence, in fact third-party support on PSP successor was starkly lower in importance and PSV became the last handheld console ever released by Sony until now.
