Pornhub is now blocked in nearly 20 states

y'all crying about the children remind me of the 1930s Reefer Madness crowd all over again

we've come full circle

at the end of the day we are talking about new censorship laws that will accomplish absolutely nothing

if you really think this will prevent youth from accessing porn, I got a bridge to sell you

I think it's more the idea of limiting children rather than its effectiveness. It's a losing battle for sure because where there's a will there's a way.

Back in my day I had a box of titty mags stashed in a box near the creek. You'd find all sorts of goodies dumpster diving at the Crown Books store.

Some of you are acting like all Americans ramble on about “freedoms” all the time. That’s mostly just libertarians here. Most of whom aren’t remotely consistent but they don’t represent all of the US.

Age verification for any adult material was absolutely the norm until the Wild West internet was created.

And honestly I don’t see any real problem with it. Do I actually want it? No…. But it makes perfect sense.

It's hard to be mad at news like this.

If you haven't read it already, I highly recommend this book. It is a written by a secular humanist and she comes to some incredible conclusions by the end. Pornhub is, without doubt, bad for society.

Why would it be any different online? You're not submitting your information to the government, you're submitting it to the site runner/owner. The onus is on them to ensure they verify identity, just as it's on the strip club bouncer or the convenience store clerk to verify age before selling restricted items.

....which can be requested at the behest of the government at any time, something that is almost certainly going to happen given that the goal behind this whole thing. Censroship and surveillance under the guise of 'protecting the children' is a tale as old as time lmao. They tried to do it with comic books like 4 or 5 different times.

If you have to be 18+ to go into an adult porn video store, or an adult club, or an adult novelty store, or buy an porno magazine, online should he held to the exact same standard. That's not an anti-porn position. I'm not calling for the banning of porn. Just that the rules be consistent. Society, at least here in the US, has decided that anyone under 18 shouldn't be legally allowed to access porn. I don't want to hear any excuses about why it can't/shouldn't be done for online sites because what you're doing is establishing a different set of rules for the internet which opens a bigger pandora's box regarding other age restricted things.

The internet already operates on a different set of rules and this rule doesn't operate the same way as it does offline. That ship has sailed. Theres zero way to block people under 18 from accessing all pornography on the internet. Zero. Nada. Going after porn sites wouldn't even begin to solve that problem, and online age verification is something any kid can get around if they're savvy. Again, let's not pretend we don't know the end goal here.

Also, the complaint of "I don't want my information going to a database" is kinda meaningless considering everyone's ID is already in multiple government and civil databases already. You probably don't even know how many. In the US, there are 14 conditions where your DL or state ID information can be shared, many of which don't even require your authorization.

Yeah but how many of those know what kinda porn has been looked up attached to my name? I'm sure its out there but if they have me GIVE it to them then they can say that I authorized them to look at that.

You dont gotta like porn. I dont think porn is good for society either but if you cannot see the implications attached to this I think you're wearing blinders. This is a much bigger deal than some Japanese game characters cleavage getting covered up, and that draws outrage.

Should be done worldwide for all sites, porn is extremely harmful to society at large. It is nowhere near just about "think of the children".

I suspect it will happen in the future eventually, when fertility rates are completely collapsed.
I guarantee this dude is jerkin it to some weird shit.

Blocking people from making choices does not a virtuous society make. It makes a controlled one.

Porn is harmful? Then the people should decide that they don't want it. On their own.

If the fertility rates drop because they won't, then that's the will of the people. And that shouldn't be denied them.

I've actively blocked all porn on a router level on my home network. It's not good for the brain.

Get a girlfriend or wife instead.
It violates the soul, you'll develop all different kinds of kinks and disgusting fetishes, always searching for the next thing to get your juices going, until you'll be looking straight into the abyss. It's also a powerful weapon of psychological warfare to enslave your mind to your passions, a lot of people don't realise it.

I wonder how many people for this actually have partners, since there's certainly a sector of the internet full of boys who are angry that women don't choose them and blame literally everything else, one of them being porn as it allows women to sexually get off without the need for them.

Pornhub does not like the age verification laws that some states have passed so they are blocking themselves. That's their freedom.

These states are not the only ones doing this. Google search found.....

The legal age to view pornography in the UK

The legal age to view pornography is 18. There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as if the pornography is considered to be educational or of artistic merit. However, generally speaking, if you are under 18 and you want to view pornography, you will need to find a way to do so without breaking the law.

There are a few ways that you can view pornography legally in the UK if you are over 18. One way is to purchase it from a licensed sex shop. Another way is to subscribe to an online porn site that requires age verification. Finally, you can always rent or buy DVDs or videos from an adult rental store.

So there you have it! The legal age to view pornography in the UK is 18. There are a few ways that you can legally view pornography if you are over 18, but generally speaking, if you are under 18, you will need to find a way to do so without breaking the law.

Same thing. Probably other countries that do the same.

I could easily make the case that video games are decreasing the birthrate, dating and a net negative for society. I should unilaterally decide to ban that too since my opinion of what everyone else should do is correct, you neo-Puritan fascist.

Plenty of things that cause harm in America that could be banned.

What happened to Americans wanting small government? Allowing individuals their freedoms? Shouting about how things shouldn't be the responsibility of government to police in any way?

...or does that all come to a halt at titties, because they're religious?

As far as I'm aware, there's no legislation that requires Pornhub to gain age verification ID documentation for people to view it in the UK. Same applies in Australia. You get the old classic 'only enter this site if you are over 18' pop up, but that's it.

Aren't these US states now demanding Pornhub actively gets ID from the viewer before the porn is viewable?

That's the issue. It's essentially the government forcing a private company to harvest and retain people's private data.

I'm stunned that so many Americans have no issues with this.

That's overgeneralizing Americans. The Democrats in the US are all for big government and they have been in power more years than not this century. Individual freedom isn't a universal thing, obviously. Plenty of recreational drugs are illegal. Prostitution is illegal in the vast majority of states. That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with religion, although obviously religious people have strong feelings about these things.

Most Americans are not going to go to bat for pornography. You tell most folks that porn sites now have to actually verify age rather than posting some silly banner and they will say "good". So if you are expecting Americans to start protests over something like this, I don't know what to tell you.....that just ain't going to happen. Hell, I had no idea this was even a thing until I saw this thread. It isn't even considered news worthy over here.

Edit:

State and local governments can pass whatever laws they want, but it doesn't mean a thing if the courts deem them to be unconstitutional. This law is set to be reviewed by the Supreme Court.

Buddy, banning/outlawing the thing "harmful to society" has literally never worked to stop that thing from happening a single time in the history of America. Doesnt work for prostitution. Didn't work for weed. Wouldn't work for guns.

Wanna address the porn problem? The fertility rate? Actually address it. Educate kids on safe sex and about the harm porn can do if unchecked. But banning it doesn't make people magically stop wanting to consume it.

Thats not ignorance thats just the reality.

I tend to agree. Typically results in an overworked legal system. This age verification isn't addressing a thing, as many have pointed out, since it is easily bypassed. I'm sure VPN sites everywhere will get a boost in revenue.

Like I said there's a real conversation to be had about negative effects of pornograohy especially unchecked to the youth but even beyond that. I've seen it have negative effects on people before.

I just think this is the exact wrong way to go about it and is a bandaid over an infection wound. It will give the veneer of treatment but it won't address the issue

I think this is all for show. A few politicians can brag about saving children from porn. But it is just one site. Somehow they don't realize the fact that one of the biggest porn sites in the world is Google. Turn off "safe search" in image search on Google and every under 18 year old under the sun will get pages of porn*.

*so I've heard

The "age verification" is trivial and I don't see how it helps prevent anything. This is probably just Pornhub wanting to make a statement.

Unfortunately porn is really bad for your brain as it makes you numb to the real thing. Also porn women are damn near perfect and you can customize everything by finding just what you like (not to mention changing it up daily). With a wife/gf you are stuck with the same thing and it doesn't get better with time ;)

I'm confused, if the state requires age verification why is the site blocked?
They are self blocking in protest because they think there should be some sort of device based authorization that all porn sites can use instead of each site having to implement id verification at the account level.

Ok thanks for clearing that up, so why are people mad at the state when pornhub is blocking itself?

Oh give me a fucking break. You can't walk into an adult XXX video or "novelty" store without proving age.
Anyone under 18 is shown the door.
That same age verification is the bare minimum standard online porn sites should be held to.

That isn't "censorship", it's common fucking sense. PornHub said "nah, we're good" to age verification and decided to self-censor in those states. Says a lot more about PornHub than it does the lawmakers who want to hold them to the same standard every other adult store is held to.
Eh, there is a bit of a difference between showing a picture ID to a person, where nothing is documented, and having to have your ID assigned to a profile that then logs every click into a database that can easily be hacked and weaponized against you. I wouldn't believe pornhub if they said they have iron security about your profile activities. It's not like the old days when there was a playboy or even penthouse subscription "on the books" for your dad, that was a physical thing you had to thumb through in an office. These days digital archives are hyper-vulnerable and rife with being hacked and exposed.

Of course I guess if pornhub staked at the level of playboy or penthouse it might not really matter, but if stuff like "1 cup, 2 trannies" is out there I'm sure plenty of folks would not want 5000 views per month attributed to them :p

The real onus is on the parents who provide the access. I can selectively block each of my kids devices through my router/ISP. Thats the real gateway measure I think.

also we are finding out gaf is full of a bunch of anti porn losers.
I don't know that I would call someone who is anti-porn a loser. There are people who have had their lives negatively affected (or even ruined) by porn so I think it is natural that some would be against it. People also tend to not really care about regulations that don't directly impact them.

It's not uncommon for regulation to require the point of purchase or delivery to restrict access to regulated products. Retailers have to verify the age of customers before providing them with alcohol or nicotine products and nobody really cares. I would wager that most people don't care that regulation is starting to require distributors of porn to verify the age of consumers before delivering it to them.

Government shouldn’t be monitoring or restricting your porn habits. Your family should be.
No! Not your family! The values they teach you while raising you to become a healthy, happy adult.

There's nothing wrong with watching porn. Having your kids consume it without ever talking to them about healthy sexuality is.

There really trying rile up a lot of sexually frustrated men who needs something to decompress. Say what you will about porn but I'm going to be honest I think its a necessary evil. It should be free to consume.

I don't care too much because there other sites that exist that you can freely use. But some of the comments in this thread reminds me of the saying "give people an inch they take a mile".
