PS5 as a 4K blu-ray player?

I use the ps5 as a player in my dedicated Home theatre and it is one of the best ones in germany aecording to the people that visit it regularly from the Home theatre Forums.

So it cant be that Bad.

So, I've got my brother cleaning out his garage and he has a bunch of 4K Blu-ray movies he wants to give away. I initially told him I don't have a 4K Blu-ray player, so it'd be pointless for me, but then I realized the disc player I bought for my Pro (that I still have yet to receive) DOES read 4K UHD movies.

Browsing online tells me it's not as good as a standalone player, even a cheapass one, but I don't care all that much since I'm not a movie buff. As long as I got a nice 4K picture, I'm good to go. There's no Dolby Vision, but my S90D doesn't support it as far as I'm aware, so this isn't a big deal either. Is it any good as a Blu-ray player, or should I just go ahead and purchase a budget one because it doesn't do the job?

Thanks, bros.

I enjoy a nice picture but I am no videophile. I use it as a 4K player and movies look awesome to me. I have a Samsung tv, older model.

If you are the type to count frames and bitch about "true black levels" and all of that minutiae, then you'll want to look for a dedicated player.

If you are going to watch movies and appreciate how good they look in 4K as is compared to a traditional image, it works just fine.

Been using two of them since launch and they are fine. Also have an LG in the living room. My girl and I watch a lot of films and most of the 4K discs look amazing, some of the restorations are truly great. So many details and the colors can really pop. We do intend to get a Sony or Panasonic player one day as well but we've been quite happy so far considering the price.

PS5 works great as a 4K player. Doesn't support DV but other than that I'm not aware of any flaws.

It also might be the most reliable player based on the 4k blu ray reddit. Lots of playback issues with freezing on certain discs on the standalone players from Sony and Panasonic when the PS5 plays them no problem.

I don't really buy disc's anymore.....it isn't 2001.

Sorry PhysicalGAF.

But I just remembered, I actually did use 1 disc. The Last Guardian unpatched to get the 60fps.

Nothing to do with 2001, everything to do with high-end TVs and excellent sound systems! Most digital streams cut corners on sound and don't come close to the quality of UHD picture quality with a real UHD Blu-ray player!

Yeah, it'll be fine. A standalone player is always a decent investment imo, but if you ain't a movie buff and your TV doesn't support some of the features 4K BR brings, the PS5 will do just fine.

The PS2 was what got me into collecting movies/shows on DVD back when I was younger and significantly more attractive.
