I'm gonna be completely honest here. I use to argue that both the Original and Remake can co-exist, because they're both great. I tried replaying the Original last year, and it just made me want to replay the Remake instead. Don't know if that's sacrilegious, but the Remake really shined a light on how absolutely goofy RE4 was. I think for it's time a lot of it's corny elements worked, such as Salazar, the Codec taunting between Leon and the Villains, the constant one liners, but 20 years later I don't feel like it's aged completely well. I think the Village sections of the original are still brilliant, but as soon as you enter the castle and Mr. "Eeeheeeheeeehaaha MR. KENNEDAY!" walks into frame, it becomes a different game.
I get the goofy elements of the original is why some people love it, or even prefer it over the Remake, but I appreciate how much more consistent RE4R feels to RE2R with it's tone and Leon's character. The original RE4 starts off as a atmospheric and creepy survival horror game, and then becomes an action cornballfest for the rest of the game as soon as you enter the castle. But RE4R manages to keep it's horror elements for a lot longer, I feel.
I don't expect everyone to agree, this is just my take.
