Agree'd. I have to say, I will be a little disappointed if I don't hear him shout "LUUUPIN!" and stamp his feet by the end of the series. I'm sure he will... I'm just glad he's not that goofy in a series like this. Zenigata can kick ass when he wants to.
. He had one in "In Memory of...", but as I shared in my review. I wasn't a fan of the decision.
Since this is going to be running a bit longer, maybe they can work with it? I dunno. I'm forever for Zenigata as a
Darkside, if you're going to post about shit that isn't anime you should at least have the common courtesy to translate the title poorly into japanese and use a lot of annoying weeaboo words in your summary of the episode.
I prefer Zenigata solo too; he's expressed many times in the series that he is the only one who can capture Lupin and that he doesn't need help. He's assigned help in one of the Red Jacket episodes and he throws a tantrum about it. With that said, I'm not totally against the idea. If anyone, I'd prefer his sidekick to be Melon Cop, especially since this is a prequel series.
With that said, I think
Oscar
may well be a very interesting character! I don't know if you're aware... but there is a character of that same name in the Red Jacket series.
It's a male character whom Lupin seems to fall for, leading him to question his sexuality. This soon changes though, as Oscar is eventually revealed to be a woman in disguise! I wonder if that character and this new Oscar are related?
Oh man, had no clue! That could definitely lead to some interesting paths to branch in the series. Then again, it is the Fujiko show, but this new information has me more hopeful that something notable can be added with the character.
Apart from some visual inconsistencies here and there, this was a really nice first episode, fun and with some action. I love Medaka, both as what's been presented of her in this episode as well as her look.
Yeah I don't think this show is for me. The premise seems kind of cool but I just wasn't feeling this. Might give the second episode a shot sometime later.
I've taken some screenshots, hopefully they convey something of what I mean. They're not the best shots in the show but I'm trying to avoid anything specifically spoilery and it's more about conveying the "atmosphere".
Japanese watchers seem to think it's very SHAFT-y. Perhaps I'm not familiar enough with their romantic comedy work but it didn't seem quite as "LOOK AT ME!!!! I'M DIRECTING!!!!!!!" as what I think of as SHAFT.
Wow, those shots are rather pretty and atmospheric. While they don't remind me of Shaft, the OP does in its use of sparse but visually pleasing layouts and transitions - not anywhere close to the best Shaft OPs, of course, but an above-average effort I wouldn't have expected.
I guess I'll give this a shot. I'll remain highly skeptical until I see how later episodes pan out, but if DEEN can actually give me a good show this season after J.C. Staff managed to give me two good shows last season, that alone will make this a memorable year for anime.
I couldn't agree more
It's like every shitty trope and generic cliche you could fit into a show, with a terrible OP/ED and bad art to go with it
There's just nothing good about it
I win this round because, unlike you, I didn't even look at the clock once.
This shit makes Brave 10 look like a masterpiece. I knew I was in for something really special when there was a sudden girlfriend appearance, falling out of the sky and everything, within the first few minutes and played entirely straight. Generic protagonist is every bit the absolute pussy you'd expect. He's disgusted by naked girls and rides a vespa. Even if the sengoku girls weren't zero-dimensional characters, the character designs are so fuckawful that I can hardly look at them. They're low-budget PSP JRPG character design bad.

You love Mary Sues? Not that she's alone in being a bad character, not a single character in this episode was interesting. Also, despite the nice backgrounds, the show doesn't feel grounded in anything. It doesn't seem like the universe exists outside of the school; it's just like some weird meta-anime setting. I'm not completely sure why it feels that way but I suspect it has to do with the cliched writing, bland direction, and awful character designs. It's like some parody of bad anime gone terribly awry and become what it claims to mock, and it's just boring.
It feels more like a SHAFT anime than a Gainax one, to be honest.
Alright, so this was much better than I expected. I actually really hated Medaka Box pre-genre shift, but seeing it animated really made most scenes tolerable and others actually good. I think this particular habit of Medaka's translates well to the medium.
That being said, I am reminded of just how much I hated Medaka in the beginning (not to say I don't hate her now, but less so). Her perfection, her arrogance, how it's portrayed that she's always right and that is how you are supposed to see her; it's all very aggravating. If I wasn't aware of the things that happen to her, this would probably have soured my experience quite a bit.
There do seem to be some interesting animation quirks going on here and there. Not quite to the point of Bakemono or Nisemono, but it's something I noticed. I actually like it that way; a nice subtle touch doesn't feel obtrusive like it does in the aforementioned Nisioisin adaptations.
It looks like Unzen is in the OP, so that should be confirmation that we really will get to the genre shift (if anyone still seriously believed we wouldn't). Based on the preview of the next episode, they'll go at a 2:1 ratio, so hopefully we'll get there by episode 7 or 8.
So yeah, not a bad intro, but I can see why people wouldn't like it. My fear is that people will just see this as unremarkable and drop it quickly while it's still in the intro/pre-genre shift stages. That doesn't necessarily mean they'd like it better when it happens, but the first few arcs really do not represent the series as a whole and I hope people would try to keep an open mind. It is relatively popular for a reason.
Who is Mamoru Hatakeyama (the director of this show, who appears to have no other credits), and has he been feasting on Tatsuyuki Nagai's brain? Or at least siphoning off some JC Staff crew, perhaps.

You know, I'm actually surprised I liked the Medaka Box episode. The manga was rather painful for me in the beginning and I thought it was boring as hell. Typical Nisioisin dreck.
Maybe seeing the intro with all the knowledge of the later portions makes it good in retrospect. I mean it isn't like Nisio had planned anything out at this point, but I am seeing things that I can connect to later events.
Articalys actually mentioned something like this in the manga thread (minor spoilers). Incidentally, he also liked this episode. Perhaps the only ones that will would already be fans. Awaiting Dresden's reaction.
This is more or less what I think I need out of Lupin at this point. The show is something more callous and headstrong than a typical Lupin outing, sussed up in an elaborate and often electrifying fashion to carry a series that in all honesty has to tell a similar tale in what has become a very long running franchise.
Maybe the impressions I read prepared me a little too well for what was coming, but it wasn't quite as lewd as I imagined, and what was there made sense for both the setting and within context. For example, I was surprised anyone had complaints over the french kiss early in the episode when it
served as a very deliberate method of poison delivery.
Likewise, the motivations of the characters' instinct to steal seemed well established as a means of thrill seeking. Even the the OP seemed to push that idea forward pretty heavily, although I could understand how one might be distracted during the sequence and miss its tone.
The action scenes here fell a little flat for the most part. Still stylish, but without much in the way of tension. Hopefully this is something alleviated in future episodes. Very strong intro episode though, I'm expecting a lot of good things from the show.

I don't know if I love Mary Sues, but she was presented as strong, a bit abusive and unwilling to listen to others and I loved that. Her nonsensical actions and use/abuse of her physical features (naked body with Zenkichi, Kendo ability with the delinquents) to reach her own goals is an expression of that and what I appreciated about her.
I also like her expressions and facial design overall. The design of her uniform is silly, but hey, tits overflowing out of a dress and I like tits, so I can't complain.

Yeah... it was a long time ago, but I think I might have been annoyed a bit with Medaka's godmode status back then, at least until low ratings or whatever kickstarted all the crazy stuff and things started to fall into place.

Yeah, it's amazing how how those aspects in context, or with purpose, hardly feel like the usual lewdness, or obvious pandering, isn't it? Even the OP, as the birthday-suit-tastic OP it was, was a visual metaphor for confliction/duality, alongside her awesome monologue--down to her conjoining at the end. Really classy, and that's actually what impressed the hell out of me. Good note. The ED didn't try anything as weighty, but the song was so catchy. so catchy.
