Well, I heeeard it starts off slice-of-lifey in the manga. And in a way it did in the anime, besides a few fight scenes it was Medaka doing her do and her boy toy pondering on her "do's" with "Lil Blue" talking in a silly lil' Blue way.
Sure, more "action-packed" than your common slice of life, but it didn't feel battle shounen-y to me. Then again, it didn't feel like anything.

Welp! I was only judging from the OP and how I portrayed the first episode, how the heck is that going to work!?

You're not going to trick me into watching Bad Aria.

But... but twin tailed loli hair powers!

Are you talking shit about the animation in Gankatsuou, bro?

No there's a small flash short called Gakkatsu for this season.

I don't think the world wants Lupin III to have a really complicated backstory, childhood issues and divorced parents.

Well, I don't necessarily need a complicated backstory. I just want a little more than what Lupin gives me. I mean, the characters in Birdy's first season aren't particularly complex, but there's enough motivation and conflict there to get me interested.

Medaka box wasn't doing well in the rankings, so Nisio switched it to his idea of a battle shonen. The series doesn't improve at all, though there are some decent battles here and there.

Y'know it might be because you guys here have lowered my expectations of the show but... I actually kind of enjoyed this.

I haven't read the manga so that may/may not have to do with my thoughts on it.

Seems like a pretty fun show that doesn't seem like it will be anywhere beyond just that. Fun. Though I can't say for sure how long i'll keep up with this show. For now it just seems like one of those anime where I'll watch every now and then to see how the characters fare
and a part of me is curious to see how/if they handle the romance between the two main characters. It's pretty obvious she's got the hots for the guy judging by the first episode
And it also feels like one of those shows where I can find myself dropping it pretty easily.

With that said, I'll keep watching it until I get bored of it.

The romance is handled in 100% shitty NisioIsin style. In the Manga, they have just gotten together after 140ish chapters.

I'm not really familiar with his works unfortunately (fortunately? lol) outside some of the Monogatari series so I'm gonna assume that's pretty bad.

... wait a minute, you make it sound like it shifts into battle shounen... then what the heck was it before that? Sket Dance? Gintama Odd jobs? o_O

I semi want to research this via the manga now.

That and he's too damn good at what he does, and wants something to kill his boredom, enter Fujiko.

I'm surprised you don't know the direction Medaka goes in as a manga thread regular, even if you don't follow it. It goes from generic Baka Test clone with awful Nisioshit dialogue to a trolling, meta battle shounen deconstruction with one of the best characters in fiction.

Baka and Test is an enjoyable show, so a clone of it might not be bad. Especially if it turns into a "battle shonen deconstruction". Sounds fun to me.

Argh! I really want to watch Last Exile Fam the Silver Wing but I just found out that (quasi first Last Exile spoiler but not really)
there are a cameos. This wouldn't be a problem at all if I hadn't watched the first series dubbed and now everyone's going to suddenly be talking Japanese instead of English.
I really want to watch this but I'm torn between dealing with the change and waiting for a dub. Even if I wait for a dub, it'll be handled by Funi rather than Geneon so there will undoubtedly be
recasts
. Also
I'm abnormally obsessed with castings in anime.
Anyone here who's not obsessively preoccupied with this end up biting the bullet and deal with it?

Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine 1

Was lukewarm on this until the end when I found myself really liking it, questionable filters and all. Opening sequence with the cult wedding until Lupin involved himself gave me a weird Aeon Flux vibe too which was more pleasant surprise than anything negative.

That sounds like a beautiful combination. I can see why it's been so widely discussed.
I think it was a solid straight adaptation, but some people know this is going to be irrelevant as all this episode does is make a superficial presentation of the characters and explaining an overlooked later premise without even setting a tone or continuity the show is going to follow for too long. Many will be expectant, mainly on how they will adapt certain moments though. Or getting 'screwed' over it (he, he).

So... what are the gags like? They act like human beings?

Yeah pretty much, it's a bit surreal
Just watch it, lol

The VA is good. And they've captured a lot of 'we know this looks cute so we're gonna keep doing it' in the mannerisms and stuff, especially of Panda

I like Polar Bear and his terrible puns too

That the fact that I neglected talking about the visuals in Fujiko just goes to show how tired I am tonight. Let me rectify that now.

Short of that very brief segment of Zetman there haven't been very many works which really showcase interesting visuals this year. It's been kind of bland in that department but luckily our saviour has arrived.

Now that Ben has gone out there and made it harder for everyone else to write something original about this show a lot of what I was going to say has been covered by him. There are lots of neat transitions, interesting camera techniques and neat shots that really make the episode feel 'cinematic' (I really dislike this phrase, but everyone understands what I mean by it).

What's really visually appealing about the show is that it doesn't just have 'smooth animation'. It has great character designs, background art, colouring and animation. This is why some people have described it as 'visually arresting'. The show looks sumptuous, it's extremely rich in terms of the amount of interesting things you have to look at in a given shot. It doesn't feel like a 'throwaway shot'.

Even familiar objects, like the human face, become more baroque and complicated under this artstyle.

Great, great stuff.

Does the Polar Bear do anything that makes him seem "Canadian"? I found it odd that the description pointed his nationality of all things.

But yep, I think I'm looking forward to a easy going gag comedy.

The problem is that the awful characters and dialogue are still present in the battles.

It's not really as bad as it sounds.

This is true; I've been pointing out all the flaws, but overall, it's just boring, bland, and slightly annoying; perhaps an even worse combination than simply being "bad".

I would agree, in this particular case.
But I think he was just confused by the fact that the unrelated Red Panda ISNT a bear.
although red pandas are cuter and therefore superior. They have greater rights to the panda name and thusly he may be correct in fact that "pandas" are not bears!
