Finally finished up the shows I was watching for the Winter lineup. I have no idea where to start with the Spring lineup, or if I even should with finals and graduation a couple weeks away.

Lupin is undoubtedly the best show so far, you should give it a try.

Seems like the perfect time to watch and check out anime, I still remember during that time, I was deeply engrossed in rewatching Naruto, as well as running through One Piece.

I think the most compelling anime of the Spring have actually yet to start.

I think I may wait a few weeks until I start watching any of the Spring lineup, as I did with the Winter lineup. In doing so I can check out older series in their entirety, and I can figure out when and where all of the simulcasts will be.

Fujiko the ( . )( . )th 01:

Oddly, all of the filters used to give the show the hand-drawn roughness of the original Lupin made the visuals look even more digital and artificial to me.

I don't think looking like the old Lupin is what they were going for though.

Sawako is pretty awesome.

Also I'm very intrigued by Mugi's interests.

Other than that, my only complaint so far is they need to stop recycling some jokes, especially the Mio one

Lupin III whatever 1

Well they certainly have a unique visual style and high production value, but I didn't really like any of the characters, or the bland and cliched plot.

I don't even know if it really had a 'plot' beyond two people trying to steal something. That's not really the usual anime storyline! It was just a succession of silly, extravagant and over the top things that happened in a sequence. You know, kind of like something you'd find in Cobra or....Lupin.

I don't see what's so awkward about pointing out that a production was created for television or movie theaters.
Because people already know what it is. I know that AnoNatsu aired on television, as well as Game of Thrones. I know that Lord of the Rings was shown in theaters. Going out of your way to tell people that in your posts is just insulting their intelligence.

You know, I haven't seen a lot of people post their impression about the episode. Perhaps you could expand upon what was so bad about it (besides the visuals).

1. It's Nisio Isin. Which means he tries to be far cleverer than he is, and there isn't even the talent in Gainax, unlike SHAFT, to have it work even some of the time.

2. You already mentioned it, but especially coming off Lupin, the visuals are so bland and uninspired.

3. The characters themselves. This sort of fits under the Nisio header, but it deserves it's own line. The characters are all built to be as stock and tropey and cliche and generic as possible, each in their own way, to allow Nisio to be "deep" when he subverts some of these cliches. For example, a driving plot point in the entire series is that the titular character, Medaka, is "more right than anyone else" simply by virtue of being Medaka. That way, people can yell out "this is just like a manga/anime!" at the appropriate times!

Sailor moon 03

Boss, I need more time with this
human energy collecting stuff.
I would get away with it if it wasn't for that meddling kid and her little talking cat.
Queen Beryl's arms must be getting tired!
Usagi and Naru are up at night listening to some trashy love letter radio show. If your love letter is read you get some kind of flower brooch. I'm sure this will come into play later.
Jadeite's name is mentioned.
Luna turns the radio off and tells Usagi to get some sleep.
Usagi's mom is still a MILF. Usagi is late for school AGAIN.
Their teacher comes in late and looks really tired. Sleepy teacher moe~
Remember that flower brooch?
Oh look she's wearing one. and it's making her sleepy. I wonder if that's connected?
Maybe it's part of a sinister plan!
Luna is talking to herself. Then a dude comes out of the store and pets her. kitty moe.
An ambulance comes to pick up their teacher who can't wake up. There are rumors about a sleeping disease going around.
Usagi thinks this is cool, because she's stupid.
This week's youma is a redhead hottie. HNNG.
Usagi
goes to the radio station to tlak to J-Dite about love letters. she is told the station does not air a show like that. But there it is again playing at night.
FISHY.
Jadeite is in the station being a pimp. Usagi hears a love letter from Naru being read.
The next day Naru has one of the brooches. She puts it on and immediately falls asleep. Usagi touches the brooch trying to wake Naru and falls asleep herself.
But this is just normal behavior.
Usagi has a dream about
meeting tuxedo Kamen. He is about to reveal his identity when- Luna wakes up Usagi.
Bummer right?
Usagi
goes to the Radio Station to investigate. Luna gives her THE PEN. It allows her to disguise herself.
She turns into a HOT NEWSCASTER. I like what this pen can do. Usagi manages to fall over with high heels.
She
busts into the on-air show and interrupts Jadeite, telling everyonel istening that they should send love letters in person instead of over the air.
Youma is not happy.
Usagi does the henshin thing.
The Youma starts to attack. Usagi throws her tiara. OH SHIT THESE THINGS CAN DODGE!
SUPRISE BITCH ITS A BOOMERANG!!
Let's try it with Jadeite! Oh shit, he just deflects itl ike a toy. so much for that.
Cue Tuxedo Kamen's rose to save Usagi's ass again.
All the people who fell asleep wake up again and Jadeite leaves the scene.
Usagi is writing a love letter to Tuxedo Kamen in class. Naru takes it and runs around threatening to read it. Their teacher Haruna joins in. Hijinks ensue.

Good blogger Ben has written a piece about the new Lupin. Spoilers: he doesn't like it.
In general they've made the characters more hard-boiled and toned down the light-heartedness, in the process sapping the show of a lot of what made it so fun. I'd like the show to be adult, but that doesn't mean it has to be humorless and dour.
Disagree with this point here, I wouldn't describe the series as humorless at all, in fact it was pretty damn funny at times.:D
I rewatched Lupin on my phone which has a big ol oled
Sorry that really doesn't justify anything, it's still a fucking phone...

First taste of the new season:

Zetman 1

Don't know the manga, so maybe that's why, but that looked interesting. Love the character designs, and the whole thing wasn't half bad.

Medaka Box 1

Dunno. Bad, but still somewhat intriguing. I guess I should rewatch the first episode, maybe I wasn't in the right mindset. Might need alcohol. Anyway, the first few episodes are supposedly not really reflective of the actual show, so I guess I'll continue either way.

Kore wa stuff of the Dead 1

Now that was fun. I'm on board.

I rewatched Lupin on my phone which has a big ol oled, it's easily the best looking anime I've seen, ever, and that's including Redline. With the deep blacks, the shadows streaked along not at all awkwardly as they did a bit in my first viewing, but arrestingly so, and the colors; they popped as all do on oleds, but since the show employs such muted ones, they did so without making my eyes bleed as the oled occasionally does. It's like watching a painting. I can't even articulate how impressed I am right now.
This post is so terrible. Wow.

Rather than bad, its more like everything is just dull. As Envelope mentioned, its a bunch of uninteresting characters that have boring/stupid reasons for their actions. They sound like they are saying something meaningful but they are not. Nothing is funny, nothing is exciting. Amusingly the visuals probably end up being the best part of the show since there was some spots of good animation in there, and I like the coloring in the backgrounds, but even this aspect ends up being dull because there is nothing actually interesting to look at and the character designs are rather unlikeable as well.

A lot of shows you watch and think "hey this is cool" or "hey this is really awful", but Medaka Box is something where you walk away not really caring. At least that was my impression of the first episode. I guess if I were to sum everything into one word, it would be "uninspired".

This post is so terrible. Wow.

You mean watching it on a phone?

Recorder to Randsell - 14

Not repetitive. :O

Gakkatsu - 01

Well that was... erm... flash animated. ¬_¬

Kuromajo-san ga Tooru - 01

Now this a short that doesn't make me want to bang my head against a hard surface.

Medaka Box - 01

Dear lord those melons... and they have that stupid boob physic sound effect to boot, random fanservice in a way that makes it feel like they're trying too hard, and they keep pushing the childhood friends bit, well if it were typical shoujo it would have been doomed from the start. I guess a plus side is that we have a strong female who is unrivalled at the top, the cynic in me wonders how long that would last.

I'm such a sucker for antenna hair. :<

Are you honestly so curious? Page 157 has a decent amount of impressions.

- The show hasn't set up any likable characters. Medaka is
a loud mouth with extraordinary abilities and little else to her besides this. Zenkichi is (tsundere for her? Can I use that word for him?) reluctantly entranced by the antics of Medaka, so he follows her because, he believes he should always protect her even though he despises her cockiness/"high horse". Her goals aren't admirable, her main flaw is focusing on a concentration of her goal. Wanting to fulfill wishes despite possible consequences along with the "I shall never fail" attitude to boot.
I guess this could be expanded upon in the future to show her learning from the shortcomings of this mindset (probably has been done in the manga), but at face value, it's a goal of no worth.

- Camera and transitions are so standard, it hurts. (Perhaps, a minor point for an opening episode, however)

- I question what emotions were supposed to be evoked as an opening episode. It erected no base for itself in action, humor, interesting plot (highly based on a personal level, as I think a super natural student playing genie is not) nor a set of characters I look forward to seeing anything from in the future.

-
Hyuga
made for a dull antagonist, but is seemingly so elementary in his nature that I doubt he'll be a major antagonist for the show anyhow. Hell, he would have probably become friends with Medaka or something,
Assuming he didn't get turned "insta-good" by Medaka (Also see: He did)
. A dull antagonist or two at the first episode isn't uncommon for a show of this nature (shonen), but it still shouldn't be overlooked. A protagonist with instant win powers showing neither depth in personality nor weakness is not a good introduction.

Mix it with a sub par soundtrack and the visuals (as you already know) and you get.....wait for it!....."No."

I was wondering what would happen when there came a day when the dissenters were far, far more numerous and vocal than the fans. Now I know.

Next episode should give a clear indication about where exactly this is going to go, given that they've demonstrated her superhuman abilities and the OP, I'm leaning more towards "Battle shounen"

Well, you're right, I just don't personally find it in any way compelling. The characters don't appear to have any motivation beyond the surface one of "stealing things is fun," nor are there are any interesting dramatic conflicts, either internal or between opposing characters. I just have difficulty maintaining interest in an adventure show about characters I don't care about doing things for no particular reason, regardless of how well it is animated.

Hey, don't look at me. I was pleased with my previous one word review! But since someone nudged for clarification...

So I've heard. Then maybe it will do a better job after that "genre shift". I'll be skimming through future reviews to see if this is so..

Lupin III is a descendant of the great thief Arsene Lupin. It's in his blood. That's his motivation, bro.

That sounds like a beautiful combination. I can see why it's been so widely discussed.

That's great. I just don't personally find a genetic disposition for thievery very interesting. Well, I mean, it could be interesting in a show that actually explored what it means if people are genetically predisposed to a life of crime, but I seriously doubt this is that kind of show.

I semi want to research this via the manga now.

That's truly the worst sin of all.

What I seem to be gathering from these responses is that Medeka is so bland that people won't even write about how bland it is unless I directly raise it as a topic for discussion. Owch.

Well, I heeeard it starts off slice-of-lifey in the manga. And in a way it did in the anime, besides a few fight scenes it was Medaka doing her do and her boy toy pondering on her "do's" with "Lil Blue" talking in a silly lil' Blue way.
Sure, more "action-packed" than your common slice of life, but it didn't feel battle shounen-y to me. Then again, it didn't feel like anything.

There's a big gap between "grimdark" and whitewashed. Wandering Son is a good example of a show that is optimistic, even idealized, but doesn't feel like it's plastered fake smiles on everyone.
Given then I'm at chapter 100+ of the manga, I don't think I can form a coherent thought of the anime as an individual, distinct text now.

It's easy to not have to deal with the consequences of being trans when you don't write about being trans for like 30+ chapters, I suppose.
