Finally finished up the shows I was watching for the Winter lineup. I have no idea where to start with the Spring lineup, or if I even should with finals and graduation a couple weeks away.

You mean how you complained that the writing of the show was too obvious, and then you predicted an ending that was completely wrong?

Fujiko the ( . )( . )th 01:
Oddly, all of the filters used to give the show the hand-drawn roughness of the original Lupin made the visuals look even more digital and artificial to me.
Lupin III whatever 1
Well they certainly have a unique visual style and high production value, but I didn't really like any of the characters, or the bland and cliched plot.
I still need to finish Ben-TO ;_;
I WANT MORE FREE TIME GODDAMNIT.
Medaka Box 1
No.
Because people already know what it is. I know that AnoNatsu aired on television, as well as Game of Thrones. I know that Lord of the Rings was shown in theaters. Going out of your way to tell people that in your posts is just insulting their intelligence.I don't see what's so awkward about pointing out that a production was created for television or movie theaters.
Nary enough time to finish this short anime?
You know, I haven't seen a lot of people post their impression about the episode. Perhaps you could expand upon what was so bad about it (besides the visuals).
Good blogger Ben has written a piece about the new Lupin. Spoilers: he doesn't like it.
Disagree with this point here, I wouldn't describe the series as humorless at all, in fact it was pretty damn funny at times. In general they've made the characters more hard-boiled and toned down the light-heartedness, in the process sapping the show of a lot of what made it so fun. I'd like the show to be adult, but that doesn't mean it has to be humorless and dour.
Sorry that really doesn't justify anything, it's still a fucking phone...I rewatched Lupin on my phone which has a big ol oled
This post is so terrible. Wow.I rewatched Lupin on my phone which has a big ol oled, it's easily the best looking anime I've seen, ever, and that's including Redline. With the deep blacks, the shadows streaked along not at all awkwardly as they did a bit in my first viewing, but arrestingly so, and the colors; they popped as all do on oleds, but since the show employs such muted ones, they did so without making my eyes bleed as the oled occasionally does. It's like watching a painting. I can't even articulate how impressed I am right now.

No, talking about "the black levels" and "the colors" when his phone screen can't be calibrated to any sort of acceptable standard. You mean watching it on a phone?

- I question what emotions were supposed to be evoked as an opening episode. It erected no base for itself in action, humor, interesting plot (highly based on a personal level, as I think a super natural student playing genie is not) nor a set of characters I look forward to seeing anything from in the future.
I don't even know if it really had a 'plot' beyond two people trying to steal something. That's not really the usual anime storyline! It was just a succession of silly, extravagant and over the top things that happened in a sequence. You know, kind of like something you'd find in Cobra or....Lupin.
I was wondering what would happen when there came a day when the dissenters were far, far more numerous and vocal than the fans. Now I know.
Next episode should give a clear indication about where exactly this is going to go, given that they've demonstrated her superhuman abilities and the OP, I'm leaning more towards "Battle shounen"
Lupin III is a descendant of the great thief Arsene Lupin. It's in his blood. That's his motivation, bro.Well, you're right, I just don't personally find it in any way compelling. The characters don't appear to have any motivation beyond the surface one of "stealing things is fun," nor are there are any interesting dramatic conflicts, either internal or between opposing characters. I just have difficulty maintaining interest in an adventure show about characters I don't care about doing things for no particular reason, regardless of how well it is animated.

1. It's Nisio Isin. Which means he tries to be far cleverer than he is, and there isn't even the talent in Gainax, unlike SHAFT, to have it work even some of the time.
2. You already mentioned it, but especially coming off Lupin, the visuals are so bland and uninspired.
3. The characters themselves. This sort of fits under the Nisio header, but it deserves it's own line. The characters are all built to be as stock and tropey and cliche and generic as possible, each in their own way, to allow Nisio to be "deep" when he subverts some of these cliches. For example, a driving plot point in the entire series is that the titular character, Medaka, is "more right than anyone else" simply by virtue of being Medaka. That way, people can yell out "this is just like a manga/anime!" at the appropriate times!

So I've heard. Then maybe it will do a better job after that "genre shift". I'll be skimming through future reviews to see if this is so..

Out of curiosity, have you seen any previous entries in the Lupin franchise?
Well, I mean, it could be interesting in a show that actually explored what it means if people are genetically predisposed to a life of crime, but I seriously doubt this is that kind of show.
Rather than bad, its more like everything is just dull.[...]A lot of shows you watch and think "hey this is cool" or "hey this is really awful", but Medaka Box is something where you walk away not really caring. At least that was my impression of the first episode. I guess if I were to sum everything into one word, it would be "uninspired".
... wait a minute, you make it sound like it shifts into battle shounen... then what the heck was it before that? Sket Dance? Gintama Odd jobs?
I semi want to research this via the manga now.
What I seem to be gathering from these responses is that Medeka is so bland that people won't even write about how bland it is unless I directly raise it as a topic for discussion. Owch.
Let us not forget the great Lupin the 4th.
Given then I'm at chapter 100+ of the manga, I don't think I can form a coherent thought of the anime as an individual, distinct text now. There's a big gap between "grimdark" and whitewashed. Wandering Son is a good example of a show that is optimistic, even idealized, but doesn't feel like it's plastered fake smiles on everyone.

Well that was... erm... flash animated. ¬_¬
