It's really the worst artistic choice in the whole episode, but I have a horrible feeling that they are going to stick with it. Why? Because pretty much everyone who has commented on it has noted how awful it looks, therefore it must be obvious so the team working on it as well. Yet they went ahead with it for some bizarre reason. That makes me think they are committed to it.
Come on! It isn't that bad. I like it because it reminds me of aggressive and tacky shadows from a pencil test, a raw thing.

Good blogger Ben has written a piece about the new Lupin. Spoilers: he doesn't like it.

Somehow I knew that before I'd even finished reading the sentence.

So, he thinks it's very well made but doesn't like it because it's different to other Lupin works. That's fair enough, I suppose.

And not everything has to be grimdark, is my point. When everything is bleak, bleak stories become boring and even then, I'd rather my grimdark shows actually be set in reality rather than science fiction/fantasy.

There's a big gap between "grimdark" and whitewashed. Wandering Son is a good example of a show that is optimistic, even idealized, but doesn't feel like it's plastered fake smiles on everyone.

Nah.

I am baiting macodin to come back with this, but Ritsu really is the most useless of the group. She had all of one episode that was dedicated to her and she mostly exists to embarass Mio in the rest. The hyperactive idiot role is already filled by Yui anyway so she's superfluous.
I swear, if Ritsu was 3DPG, I'd be on that like white on rice. And not even because she was my waifu
before Katawa Shoujo
, my band just really needs a drummer. You have no idea how important a drummer is to a rock band. ;___;

I might go into a bit more depth later on, but for some clarity, I think it would be best to point out that the second season stays much closer to the source material than the first, in both story AND art, for better or worse, since Yu Aida was involved in the production. So you know, this is largely the direction the manga took at the start of the Pinocchio arc. Part of the skill of the first season is that they had the writing staff to fill out the episodes in a more satisfying manner and the animation budget to make it look good. The second season did not. Alot of the plodding was pretty ham-handed, but some elements, such as the arc Triela had through the story
since Pinocchio was sort of her foil
I felt was pretty well done, production niggles aside, and at least as well done as Henrietta's arc in the first season, imo. This made the last couple episodes of the season proper outright painful to watch.

So you know, in the manga
as soon as Franco and Franca et al leave the picture, things largely go back to focusing on the fratelli with a hefty period going to Petrushka, the first second gen cyborg and her whirlwind romance with her handler.
What I'm main surprised about is that you didn't find the OVA in the Sicilian villa to be uncanny.
Jean and Jose, decked out in their "Italian finest" aside, that alcohol induced hallucination of his dead little sister was outright disturbing and you got an uncomfortably close look into Jean's state of mind.
It really shows off alot of hidden complexity the franchise operates on. I remember that there were alot of scenes in the first season, such as
Claes' handler heavily implying that he was ratting out the SWA, when in the comic, it was only that scene where he hands Claes her glasses in one panel, and then was dead by hit and run in the next.
The second season doesn't fill in those blanks like the original, and in some ways that's good, and others bad.

This is really not to say that S2 had it's problems, oh hell yes it did. I wasn't really feeling it until the last few episodes, and that last fight, I just have to say, it was downright painful, PAINFUL to watch. Not because it was bad, but because
it was so hard to see Triela fight that hard for so little...

In response to the article...

Zenigata seems to have a completely different personality. That would be fine, except that he's just kind of boring now. He was such an entertaining and endearing character before. Now he's static and stone-faced. Instead they seem to hint at some kind of homoerotic subtext with his bizarrely designed aide straight out of a yaoi manga that felt really tasteless and out of place.

Come ON. This is the first episode. From the design sheets we can clearly see Zenigata with his typical wacky expressions. Would it really have worked with him running around the boat and jumping into the sea shouting "LUPIN!!!" I kind of like this serious Zenigata... I'm sure he wont be stone faced the entire series. This is technically set before Green Jacket, he's one of the best cops at the ICPO, it makes sense. I also think that Oscar is probably female, and that's something they'll reveal much later into the series.

Other than that disagreement, it's a very good review and I do second a lot of what was written. Still, I really enjoyed it. We've had wacky crazy fun time Lupin and co for going on 40 years now; it's nice to see something a little cooler and different.

We are speaking about who is the most useless in K-on?

Azusa. She was a Mio clone since she was introduced.

That particular review strikes me as something that you write not long after watching the episode in question, while you're still mulling over what you just witnessed. He's not trying to put forth any particular argument along the lines of "it's different therefore it's bad" and instead he's saying "I don't like these particular changes because...".

At least, that's what I think he's saying.

I don't inherently hate that particular effect (although I don't really like it either) but the way it was implemented throughout the episode was inconsistent. Sometimes it looked okay, but at other times the artificiality of it was really distracting. For example, in this shot:

LupinIIIShadows.png

The harsh, exact line that cuts across her body in a perfectly straight manner really draws attention to the effect in all the wrong ways. It's not blending at all, in other words, it looks like the opposite of 'raw'.

I rewatched Lupin on my phone which has a big ol oled, it's easily the best looking anime I've seen, ever, and that's including Redline. With the deep blacks, the shadows streaked along not at all awkwardly as they did a bit in my first viewing, but arrestingly so, and the colors; they popped as all do on oleds, but since the show employs such muted ones, they did so without making my eyes bleed as the oled occasionally does. It's like watching a painting. I can't even articulate how impressed I am right now.

At first I thought you guys were probably full of shit, but after seeing the episode, it should have been faded in, like it is in some shots instead of looking like a stamp on top of the character. not sure why they went this direction.

Episode 12 features the most laughable use of shaky cam I’ve ever seen in animation. For reference (spoilers) http://youtu.be/UCWMC8YiJRU?t=23m9s There was some serious lack of vision when it came to S2's presentation.

Man it would be hard to fight during an earthquake.

That's a fair assessment of both shows and one that I won't argue against. I guess it depends on how the show's presented and your ability to suspend disbelief. You have to consider characters act irrationally because of circumstantial reasons. They're not you, assessing the situation from the outside as a neutral viewer. What you would have done wouldn't necessarily translate well as a storytelling device. Being outside the norm is what creates drama.

Seeing it on 10th place in the 2011 anime of the year thread, beaten by Hanasaku Iroha of all things, leads me to believe there are more that hold your view. It's unfortunate, because I genuinely think Ano Hana is progressive in its storytelling when you compare it to shows of recent years in the same medium.

Team HanaIro forever!
Both shows were written by the same person.

Well, I have my own problems with Iroha that aren't worth rehashing yet again (the writing equivalent of seeing a boom mic in a shot)

You mean how you complained that the writing of the show was too obvious, and then you predicted an ending that was completely wrong?

Sailor Moon 02

Ok so we have an old fortune teller guy.
He is a pretty popular, with long lines for people to have fortunes told.
Jadeite seems to be in there and he's all "This is a great idea lets use this to capture peoples energy".
Cut to Usagi late...again. She tries to sneak into class and FAILS.
She is put outside the classroom again where she meets Umino.
Umino apparently likes her but is too shy to say anything.
Umino has a handheld. He was GOD before TWGOK! He could see the ending and everything.
Usagi discovers that
the old fortune teller man has been upstaged. SOmeone has set up an elaborate outfit right across the way that is morep opular.
Wonder who it could be?
Usagi goes to the arcade with a friend. They play a Sailor V game. I want that game.
Usagi leaves and talks to Luna a bit then
gets angry and throws her shoe. It hits that same dude on the head from before.
I wonder if he's relevant?
He calls her dumpling head again.
Meanwhile,
the new fortune teller is apparently a youma and she's planting cards on people disguising it as fortunes. She casts a spell on Umino.
He becomes
a BOSS. He has swag like a motherfucker
and asks Usagi out directly.
HONEY BADGER DON'T GIVE A SHIT, he takes what he wants.
He flips up the teachers skirt
and everybody's happy.
Meanwhile,
some of the other kids are also misbehaving and breaking shit. Hoodlums. Luna suspects they may be mind controlled.
Usagi becomes Sailor Moon and
notices the cards. The youma makes everybody do the
zombie thriller dance or some shit.
THEN TUXEDO KAMEN THROWS A ROSE
IN THAT FUCKERS EYE.
While distracted, Sailor Moon tiaras that bitch into dust and everything is normal again.
Beryl is not pleased. Umino
apologizes for being a pimp. Usagi trips on the sidewalk.
Fin.

That made me laugh because I pictured perfectly that image in my head... good one.

And I think like you, man. Like in the different dynamism between strangers we saw on Lupin and Fujiko this episode, we will probably see Zenigata's obsession unfold as the series progresses. As an introduction of the professional and normal side of the character that was good.

Well I think he likes it to some degree anyway. Having said that, I don't like this piece at all. The writer spent most of his time going on about "old Lupin", and making meaningless comparisons. The final line is just dumb.

Just remember that Tuxedo Mask gets only more fabulous, with the culmination in episode 20.

Lupin III whatever 1

Well they certainly have a unique visual style and high production value, but I didn't really like any of the characters, or the bland and cliched plot.

Is "raw" in the same sense of a roughly cut and dirty screen-tone applied to the image (in like... a thing of the moment) that makes it appear as an even more dramatic figure.

Now I'll shut up, because I understand your position, and I'm only stating a very subjective interest on that effect.

Nope, just on TAN, with about a half-week delaycast. I presume TAN will still have the same delay for S2, though I admit I don't know for sure.

Seem a bit odd that they picked it up at all then, unless they also plan on putting S1 on there eventually.

Am I the only person excited for this anime?

Come on guys, it's been so long since we had an adrenaline-filled basketball anime with actual sweaty bishounen!

I'm not excited for it, but I'm waiting to see it hoping in a well animated adaption.

The Light of El Cantare
Fujiko the ( . )( . )th 01:

Oddly, all of the filters used to give the show the hand-drawn roughness of the original Lupin made the visuals look even more digital and artificial to me. The style and animation are undoubtedly incredible, but they might have gone a little overboard with the shading and tinting.

In every other aspect, this was certainly very Lupin, though. I was surprised that
Lupin apparently wasn't familiar with Fujiko, meaning that this is a prequel/reboot
, but it certainly had all of the scheming, betrayal, violence, and colorful supporting characters that I associate with my limited exposure to the franchise. It certainly shows great promise if it retains its current level of quality.
