RIP went thru a Python rediscovery phase last year, that shit all holds up. amazing stuff. him as the judge in the witch trial is still too funny.

Never had much interest in Monty Python and I'm sometimes baffled as to why people think it's a witty masterpiece. But RIP man.

It was created over 50 years ago. Comedy ages differently to other things, it predates Airplane! by 11 years and that's another one of those things that a lot of people today don't understand the hype for.

Also helps if you're British, we have a weird sense of humour.

I think it was either Michael Palin or Terry Jones talking about the BBC pushing the show into a very late night Slot (which happens to a lot misunderstood TV shows doesn’t it?) and I’m paraphrasing but was something like

“When the BBC put us on the Late night slot at 2am, the only people watching us were University Students and Burglars” 🤣

lol Airplane is trash. no wonder you can't appreciate truly brilliant comedy
You're making your own opinion out to be gospel lol. This thing is garbage and another is good because I said so. You keep on enjoying your "brilliant comedy" and I'll find my amusement somplace else.

The small episodes may not be for you, but watch The Life of Brian and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Both are amazing movies.
Life of Brian was funny because of how taboo and touch and go it was :messenger_grinning_smiling:. "I am Jesus. NOW PISS OFF!"

Rest in peace. It's unfortunate how modern comedy focuses so much on trying to make a point that it fails to be funny, whereas old comedy focused on making people laugh and still managed to make a point.

Surely you can't be serious?

RIP. I really don't have a favorite Python but for me Terry had the best post Monty career. His history docus were hugely enjoyable.

According to his fellow Pythons, Jones was always the most enthusiastic among them to perform. And it's plain obvious how much joy he was having doing all those crazy sketches. He will be missed.

i mean you went into a thread celebrating the life of a comedian you don't like or care for or think is funny. then you mentioned some other comedy movie that has nothing to do with the man in question.

like what exactly do you want out of this lol.

Sad news. As well as his huge contributions to the comedy world I also loved his history shows too.

You're making far too many assumptions. I was never a huge fan of Monty Python material despite the fact I've had a couple laughs over their movies. Must be a generational thing since people talk about it being the Holy Grail of comedy and I'm not sharing their enthusiasm. Has nothing to do with disliking the performers and I've actually given my condolences in my original post. Airplane was mentioned by another member and that's why I touched upon it.

Every person's opinion doesn't have to involve them kissing the deceased person's ass because they're dead. I stated that I'm not the biggest fan of what he created in life, but have no issue with him as a person and gave my condolences as noted before.

could be. im more Gen X in my pop culture tastes, and was introduced to it by my dad. this is kind of a common thing for kids of my generation, cos Holy Grail was out on VHS in the 80s, and it was a good way to get introduced.

i rewatched it a few years ago. just incredible stuff, still highly recommended. even though it's a cliche that it is this great nerd thing, it is so wonderful. it is non-pretentious and constantly punching up. rather than most Hollywood movies that glamorize knights and kings and queens and the rich, this film takes a muddy, literally down-in-the-dirt-with-peasants point of view. so it's not just funny, it's good satire.

in this scene from Holy Grail, Terry plays a peasant woman who has no idea who the king is or what a "Briton" is, and her peasant husband spouts the kind of faux intellectual revolutionary rhetoric still favored by keyboard activists. it is still pretty funny and relevant. "Help help I'm being repressed!" of course the kind of social justice snowflake who thinks they've figured it all out would exist back then. throughout the movie, they are looking at the miserable reality of medieval life, they are finding what is funny in the reality of the situation. also doing really silly fantasy stuff just for fun.

they take a similar track in Life of Brian, finding the humor in the brutal Roman era, spoofing Biblical narratives, and poking fun at the intersquabbling of revolutionary political groups.

at any rate, RIP to a comedy legend. he has so many memorable and great roles.

i love his weird ass arms in "Find the Fish" from The Meaning of Life.

my favorite skit of his was him as the perfect straight man for the classic "Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink" skit.

RIP.

A very funny collective who all had different qualities. When I was younger he was my least favourite, but as I got older I really appreciated his role in their routines, and especially the films.
