The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

You're alleging without any evidence that Sony just decided to randomly make the new price of a disk drive $200, based purely on a misunderstanding of a 3rd party listing. It flies in the face of all common sense, just gives "I hate Sony so I'm gonna make shit up" vibes.

Are you new here (checks profile, ahhh, he IS!)? I'm a hardcore PlayStation fan but I'll give you a pass sweetheart, just this once.

I've edited my post but any crazy price increases wouldn't surprise me, Pro cost me ¥120,000 compared to the ¥55,000 I bought my launch PS5 for, all peripherals increased in price here in September too.

Pretty sure JP prices are just due to super aggressive compensation for exchange rates being trash.

It's not that simple and even if exchange rates "normalize" to what they were just 3 years ago (Yen was trading between ¥110-120 per $1 USD, today it's at ¥154) the prices on these goods aren't going to magically drop, it is what it is.

More expensive than the Nintendo Switch OLED

That is not the OLED model. The OLED is ¥34,800. Also, only seeing the drive shipping from M2-Mart. Is this a 3rd party store? Don't get me wrong, I think it is a crap situation but unless I misunderstand the market this is scalper pricing on the drive and the regular Switch. It is still a bad situation.

I honestly don't think that changes any point

Mibu, take a look at this

418 Euros
Sold and shipped by Amazon themselves, no 3rd party scalpers, now what ?

Who the fuck puts prices like that ?
At that point, I might as well get me a PS5 slim with a drive but I guess, it's my fault as consumer that I didn't buy a drive 2+ months before the Pro released according to some people in here...

You might want to frequently check PS Direct during the day, I'm from Italy too and got one from there last week, stock only lasted a few hours though.

Screw Amazon for this one, I bought the PS5 Pro there only because of the extended return period.

So it looks like they are "re-releasing" it in Japan:

¥30,000 is real fucking obnoxious, afaik it's still $80 US? That would be around ¥12,300 at today's exchange rate, PlayStation getting silly in their home market, economic factors be damned. On the plus side my Pro has that highly prized "Made in Japan" seal of quality, if you know you know.

Edit: didn't realize it's a third party seller, let's wait and see what the actual price is once Sony has it back in stock 🤷🏻‍♂️
The disc drive costs ¥11,980 in Japan.
Also, SIEI always makes company notices regarding price increases days (or even weeks) in advance.

I've got Rise of the Ronin, Cyberpunk, Armored Core 6, FF7rebirth all on disc that i can't play because Sony morons cannot manage their supply chain or whatever, and im that close to buy a one way ticket to hermen hulst office in Amsterdam red light district (or wherever this whore of a man works from) to tell him how i feel about his managing of the company.

A japanese CEO would have committed seppuku already, but of course we're stuck with an honorless westerner.
What's with the Hermen obsession...
Nishino is currently SVP, Platform Experience Group, and leads the team responsible for developing the experiences and technology within PlayStation products and services. The Platform Experience Group pushes the boundaries of play in many ways, including the innovations in PlayStation 5, the immersiveness of PlayStation VR2, and connecting millions of people on PlayStation Network. In his new capacity as CEO of the Platform Business Group, Nishino will continue to be responsible for technology, products, services, and platform experience. He will also oversee third party publisher and developer relations and commercial operations, including sales and marketing of hardware, services, and peripherals.

We don’t know if Sony produced enough to meet demand of ratio of disc users or not. What we did know is this disc drive was cheap. We knew it was going to be in demand. So did scalpers. There aren’t any now and will magically appear everywhere after the holidays.

Darkness no more
I am ok with them being sold out as there are tons on Ebay so it is obvious scalpers bought up most of the stock we all want. I was just hoping for some word from Sony like "more will be available in 2 weeks" or something along those lines.

So Sony supposedly made a healthy number of PS5 Pros, but there is mysteriously an optical disc drive shortage? They didn’t see that coming? Nah, they made this disc drive shortage on purpose to push people to digital imo.
Very plausible, if the stock situation doesn't improve in a few months then it's pretty clear Sony is trying to squeeze people (their most hardcore users) out of physical games.

Or... ...like was said here on GAF few months ago. The drives were going to be in short supply because scalpers were already gearing up for the launch of the pro. If Sony reacts to scalpers the market will be flooded with them in 4-6 weeks. Sony loses a lot of money, and some of the same people claiming "push to digital" would be laughing "LOL disc drives are on shelves, everyone is going digital." I feel bad for people that did not jump on it early and missed out but this problem will correct itself just after the holidays. People just need to be patient.

120 Euro before scalper did came into picture wasn't cheap for a fucking blue ray drive 50% more expensive than in the us tho.

From scalping perspective, comparative to a price of a console to flip it is. Make 2-3 times per unit, none of this is a surprise. That's why there were articles the day after the Pro was announced pretty much saying you should get one then.

Tbh i am not sure if we can call it a conspiracy anymore, considering they are doing it so openly and blatantly.

For those who can’t buy the disk drive, do consider buying digital.

Erm I don’t think there is a conspiracy here. I preemptively purchased the disc drive when I preordered the Pro because I expected exactly this. The disc drive is an accessory, and stock would not be 1:1 parity with Pro models.

It’s been less than a month since the Pro launched. Sony will restock the drives soon. It sucks that people who want one now can’t get them, but you just have to be a little more patient.

I think scalpers are gonna be fucked.

Looking at hotstock UK when it does come in stock people aren't having that much trouble getting one, and it's coming in stock regularly the last few days.

Sony may have decided to prioritise discs drives to ps5s this holiday. Ps5s seems quite heavily stocked with aggressive pricing this holiday, so they probably want to do big numbers.

Gone again, missed it by 11 minutes. Thank you Sony for not having email alerts...
If they wanted to fix it all they need to do is allow pre-orders or to reserve 1 with a deposit per account (of course limiting the orders you can make this way per time period per account). That is is, make the payment once and then wait until they ship it.

Update: so i said that mine was arriving with my preordered pro from gamestop but apparently they don't have jack shit to sell neither so yeah, the situation is actually embarassing, thank god i only intend to use the pro with future sony first parties because i don't care how it perform with crossgen or crossgen looking titles, so i'm in no rush but otherwise it would be a useless piece fo plastic since most of my games are physical.

It wasn't embarassing enough to sell a 800 euros console without a disc driver included but now you can't even get one from a big company like gamestop after preordering the fucking thing.

Fuck off sony.

The only good thing in this goddam consumerist society is product availability and they cannot even ensure that...

The retail price of the regular PS5 with optical drive is currently 58% the cost of the PS5 Pro here in Canada. I still can't believe people are actually paying this insane price for a relatively small upgrade and no optical drive.

Eh, people are paying $1300 for just a 4080 Super. Anyway, if you buy a regular 4070 in Canada, it's like $700. Now add the cost of the mobo, cpu, storage, etc. The price isn't really expensive although I shouldn't talk, I bought 2 pros and I'm considering a 3rd if I can get my hand on a 30th anniversary edition.
