The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

Of course its limited stock as they stocked it as option for slim consoles mostly then. I remember buying that shit the moment i can preorder confirmed

Demand was limited before because there was a disc PS5 slim on the market. Vast majority of people who wanted a slim ps5 with the ability to play discs already bought the disc version.

This was a different paradigm shift with the PS5 Pro, since that model had no disc option. They already knew demand would be much higher.

I’m not sure how it’s outside of the UK but it’s a joke over here.

Sony have just released their premium console for £700 and it’s impossible to find a PS5 disc drive instock anywhere.

Some stores haven’t had stock in weeks.

The only way to get one now is by paying like £180 off Ebay when the RRP is £100.

Can’t believe this wasn’t sorted before launch.

It’s bad enough the Pro doesn’t come with a disc drive to begin but this is something else.
How well is the pro selling?, does it really warrant the production of loads of disc drives.

The stores (in the UK at least) are bundling them with the Pro already so it's like a disc Pro version at retail now. Currys, Very, EE all do this.

Huh? You asked if the Pro warranted "the production of loads of disc drives" and I was just telling you that the disc drives are not just for PS5 Pro. They are for PS5 Slim as well. So yeah.....I'd say the production is warranted.
Sony had no need to produce a lot of them before as it was a choice of either a disc or digital console. Now with the Pro they may need some more. But the console can't be all that popular as even the scalpers were stuck with them at launch.

I'm not surprised it's selling less quickly than the PS4 Pro did, since the PS4 Pro provided a lot more value at that time relative to the base console. PS5 was already solid so it's not providing some major upsell.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.

The PS4 Pro launched at the exact same price as the PS4 a few years earlier ($399), at the same time the price of the base model went down by $100.

That's a completely different value proposition than with the PS5 that never got an official price cut and now has a pro version that's $200 more expensive. Just imagine a world where the PS5 would sell for $400 and the PS5 Pro would launch at $500 (disc drive included). What a difference that would make.

What I find even more embarrassing is the people who think that owning the day 1 one disc actually means something nowadays.

Congrats, you got an empty case with no manual which has a no-patch, no-dlc, no-after content of any kind for your game.

Enjoy your bug-riddled game.

Unless people want that version for PS4 games? But it's not like those are any better at day one.

I think the large majority of discs on PS5 include the entire game on disc. Xbox has empty discs because they try to push digital and "smart delivery".
Anyway a day 1 patch is still smaller than downloading the entire game so it's not like the disc people don't get patches. It's mostly for ownership and resale of games for those people anyway, not preservation without internet.

Ah, that is a very good point. I never factored the fact they want to sell it to someone else. My bad.

Just buy your rental and be happy, no need to dunk on people who actually want to own something physical that they can enjoy years down the road without question. The majority of games work fine and are perfectly playable without your coveted "day 1 patch".

It means I can sell the game later if I want to 🙂

Yup, it's in stock at PS Direct as well. These guys complain without even doing a cursory look... They don't ACTUALLY want them. Same guys will complain for weeks as stock comes in and out. Meanwhile they'll disappear from this thread until its out of stock.
and you come in like clockwork.

But of course the disc drive being in high demand at the moment is some crazy conspiracy, sure, sure. And when it comes back into supply in Feb/March Sony have given up on their digital evil plans, yes?
I guess it's reached that time Bojji Bojji but you're nowhere to be found now.

Are you kidding? Obviously they've sold enough that people are having trouble finding the drives. That alone warrants further production, but Sony has pulled this same shit with all their hardware so it's not exactly surprising. Your PSVR2 controller stopped working and you need a replacement? Fuck you, buy an entire new system. You want a thumbstick for your $200 controller? Fuck you, they're only sold 1 month out of the year.

I actually bought my PS5 harddrive before the Pro released because I knew this shit would happen. Sony's supply of anything that isn't the base hardware is terrible.
