Which is the biggest (actually) new IP of this gen?

It's probably Elden Ring.

I miss the PS360 days where in a single gen you could get new IPs but even sequels to those or even whole trilogies. Uncharted, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Gears of War...

Nowadays games take way too much money and time to make, so I guess it's safer to just capitalize on existing IPs.
Those were the days indeed. Think about all the new IP we got during the PS360 era: BioShock, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us and lots more. When game development has become more and more expensive new exciting AAA IP's has become more and more rare.

I don’t think Elden Ring should count, it’s only technically a new IP, it’s open world dark souls. The formula, many animations, the look, the UI, etc are all from Souls games. It’s Dark Souls 4 in all but name imo.

Yeah honestly I thought the same while writting my post, but in the end the name and identity are different. Kinda would be like saying Heretic wasn't a new IP because DOOM already plays more or less the same.

I would go as far as saying ER is more of a new IP than something like Cyberpunk, which was already an established brand way before the game came out.

I'd say it's Elden Ring or Black Myth.

This generation has been fucking abysmal for new IPs. And I doubt that's going to change before we're moving on - may end up a contender for the worst generation, frankly.

Yea, reading this thread that's all I could think of. We are in year 5 of this console generation and this is all we have in terms of new IP? Fuckiing abysmal.

Hogwarts is not new IP imo.

Also I find Elden Ring questionable also.

Think Astro is the one that comes to mind for me, if it released after 2017 when Switch came out

Elden Ring is basically open-world Dark Souls.

Cyberpunk 2077
Black Myth Wukong
Palworld
RingFit Adventure
Genshin Impact

Sell me on this game .. if I despise having to deal with relationships will I like it ? I like a good straight forward fantasy turn based rpg

Eh.....probably not your thing. Has a lot in common with Persona so relationships are a big part of it. Definitely would not call it "straight forward fantasy turn based rpg". I love it for the really cool story and characters, but there is a lot of "equality" allegory that turns some folks off.

Uhhhh . Yeah dont care about "social" sims ... thats a pitty

I don't know, but my favorite new IP in the past 5 years (with room for iteration) is Control. Even if it came out a year early it seems to leverage the same technologies that define current gen.

The biggest? miHoYo games - Honkai Star Rail (For a second, the official sponsor of the Olympic Games - a gatcha game...), Ganshin - these games have the largest audience in the world, and no game in principle earns as much as these two, these two brands receive millions monthly. Next, most likely, in popularity and profitability, most likely go roblox and fortnite. All the other games come and go, losing their revenue - these games will most likely bring in millions steadily for many more years.

Fortnite is undeniably massive, but it wasn't launched in this generation.

Cyberpunk just scrapes in, launching on last gen consoles just after the launch of PS5. Elden Ring is cross gen too, but it released in the right time period.

There's not a lot of proper big new IPs exclusive to this gen. Starfield feels like the obvious one.

As much as I love Metaphor, by endgame it's plain as day that you're playing an SMT game.

Elden Ring and Ring Fit were the first that popped in my head.

But Black Myth of Wukong/Cyberpunk 2077 might both be bigger. Definitely bigger than Ring Fit at least.

I guess Ring Fit might be the biggest new exclusive IP though (?).

Games are so much longer now though. All those games accept maybe mass effect are 10 hour linear games.

It's seems very hard to launch a game of that length these days.

Only the resident evil franchise seems to do it consistently.

Maybe Astro bot might start a trend but I doubt it.

everybody misses those days. whether they know it or not...
I definitely don't

I lurked on GAF during that time and remember it clearly.

Honestly Gaf in some ways hasn't changed a bit lol. I remember everyone bitching about how that era sucked and the ps2 era was the best!

Everyone was sick of linear shooters with regenerating health and it seemed to reach a frenzy with bioshock infinite.

I enjoyed alot of games from that era but I think we're in a better place now overall. There's definitely more games and more variety in general I think.
