Xbox Series X - $349 (clearing stock for refresh?)

What bs is this? Yes they can. This is like saying retailers can break street dates on games. Hint, they can’t.

Mh, so if Microsoft tells Walmart to raise the price of the series s to $500 they are obliged to do so despite the fact that they will be stuck with them forever at that price?

Oddly, I bought mine this morning and received it this afternoon. Wasn't expecting that.

You must have a store close by that had it in stock and Walmart must have their own delivery service in the area.. and since they are trying to compete with Amazon on all fronts, that's very likely

Thank you!

Seems to be back to its normal price for me unfortunately
It was there for $349 for like 8min. Now it’s back to the $429

Try Diablo edition

Maybe it’s a regional thing. I’m in Oregon and seeing it for Salem and southern Oregon. Shipping by dec. 11th, so it’s not local like before.

Now it’s showing sold out. It looks like they were having intermittent availability. Sorry, man. I was trying for ya!

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Just checked walmart.com and my zip code shows the $449 price on the base and Diablo IV bundle.

The dream is over.

edit: It's $430 for the base model and $470 for the Diablo IV bundle, actually.

Go ahead and explain why retailers cannot break street dates first before i answer your question.

Regardless, if MS is behind the price drop, why the hell would they wait till after Black Friday/Cyber Monday? If this was available a week ago, I wouldn't have jumped camps. Series X at $350 is fucking steal. Congrats to anyone who picks one up at that price.

This is probably a temporary promotional offer, so they wait for the holiday shopping season to kick in. It's not at all unusual for them to price well below what they normally would at this time of the year.

I’m guessing they have agreements on the matter, but we are talking about Walmart’s ability to adjust pricing on items they sell.

They have agreements with for example /nintendo/MS or Nintendo . Was always this way, in the 90s with Nintendo for example , you break street date, you risk a fine , or get less supplies next time or you get products much later , or you get nothing at all. I worked in retail toy store.

And they have agreements in pricing, whether it be for the holidays or making way for new consoles. Do you honestly think walmart wants pallets of xboxes in their warehouse that they cannot sell after Black Friday and having to sell for a loss without an agreement from the manufacturer?

That’s the point. There are agreements.

on a per case basis then?

Walmart orders 100 tvs from Samsung at $1000/TV but are unable to sell those TVs at the suggested (key word) by Samsung price during Black Friday so they lower the price to clear stock.

Are you saying that Samsung are responsible for that difference and they are now going to pay that to Walmart in some form of compensation?

A Ford dealership gets 10 F150 trucks at 60k MSRP, but demand is low so they are forced to lower the price and sell below MSRP.. does Ford owe them money now? Absolutely not.

We have no idea what deal Walmart has with Microsoft, who’s to say that they even got the boxes directly from Microsoft? So to assume that Microsoft is taking a loss here is just that, an assumption.

Tell me you’ve never heard of compensation in the form of “credit” for future purchases.

Provided Walmart doesn't screw up the order, I'll be able to pick up the XSX Diablo IV Bundle after 11:00 AM local time. Kinda crazy considering it was just $449 on Black Friday. The Walmart I was in had a boatload of XSX hardware in stock last Friday, so maybe that is what is contributing to this pricing. My PC life revolves around a laptop that runs 3DS MAX perfectly well, but with 356GB of SSD remaining and Intel iRISxe graphics, it is in no way suited to gaming. I'm glad I'm not the impulsive purchaser I once was, a single week just saved me $100.

I actually agree quite a bit with what FunkMiller has said about the system. Three years in with no "real" exclusives is whacky, and with Microsoft's recent spending spree, I can't believe they didn't just buy Valve to keep all the revenue of their game sales on Steam (and you know, everything else Steam generates money from). It would make the rationalization of "buy our games wherever" a bit more logical. But this unit, at this price, gets me into this hardware cycle. The optical drive is an absolute necessity to me with 95+% of my Xbox software purchases over the past two decades being physical products. There is no way in hell I'd buy a refresh that is digital only. Storage expansion pricing still isn't great, but that won't be a concern for a little while. Xbone didn't get a ton of usage from me due to PS4 simply being my go to system for that full generation, so I've got enough of a backwards compatible backlog that Game Pass won't even be much of a concern for a while, at least until they get really aggressive with the Activision catalog. Really happy with the value proposition on this. I hope everyone else who picked one up enjoys it.

There's quite a few disc only, the notable ones (IMO) are:

MGS HD Collection (digital got delisted)
50 Cent Blood on the sand
FEAR (the first one)
Forza Horizon (the first one)
Mortal Kombat 9
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut too IIRC, for some reason Xbox never got a digital version with the Missing Link DLC integrated into the main story

True, true. It was not just the new chapter, they reworked many things in the main game as well.

as of this morning my order for the Diablo bundle still shows as preparing & says it’ll be delivered today, honestly until it’s actually in my hands I keep worrying it’ll get canceled

edit: it just feels like this was too good of a deal given it’s nearly 40% off 🫣

what would it cost them do you think?
Well, it's not always as straight, but lets do dumb maths and say they're subsidizing between 100-200 for every Series X sold . That means for every million of X sold they're losing between 100 million- 200 million easily, obviously with the thought(ha!) of recouping it through game sales(big chunk) or GamePass (small chunk).

That's before knowing what kind of deals they're offering retailers/e-tailers, because you know, they also want their part of the pie and aisle/web space costs, much more a privileged place than outta back next to the garden appliances. And marketing, of course: cartels, panels, game stations, bundles, advertising in media, shops and big chains, etc etc for each and every campaign, whatever holiday is coming, etc etc. When you're up, all this pays for itself through game sales, new and cheaper iterations of the hardware, etc etc. And you don't have to spend as much on marketing because you already have word of mouth, good graces, etc. When you're down, your marketing expenditure grows exponentially because you have to constantly remind people you're there, you're cool, please buy me. 🥺

That's not taking into account other things like company direct advertising, you know, the company advertising directly and not through retailers/e-tailers/influencers/zealots, or themselves, and the armies of zealots you have to pay to spread whatever you want them to spread when you want them to spread it.

I mean, by now MS must be spending lots and lots and lots of cash through the ass only to have people plug the huge leaks in the dam with their fingers to not be perceived as much as a losing box as it really is, because that would really really kill any will to buy it.

I still have my pickup order sitting there as I'm undecided whether I want to pick it up or not. I picked up a Series S on Black Friday for the $240 or whatever because I had a $25 Target GC and while $110 is well worth the upgrade I just don't know if I need it given I have a PC.

I've owned so many damn Xboxs over the years.

one reason I’d go with the X over the S is that the Series X improves upon the One X’s BC, while the S goes off of the One S’ BC (IIRC) so that means any One X enhancements won’t be available on the Series S

someone please correct me if that’s changed

You aren’t wrong. X for X and S for S.

Most of the BC games I’d play is from the 360 age though and most of those don’t have much of an enhancement over the S. Gears for example is 1440 versus 2160 which on my C2 doesn’t look much different.

Idk. I’m still thinking about it. I figure I have time to sit on it. $350 is just such a good deal.

It would be an easier decision if I hadn’t restarted FH4/5 on steam and going back to my old saves would suck lol.

I already purchased it Day 1 and beat it. I will never choose a subscription over buying games i want Day 1. I rather commit the full $70 straight to the company. Subscriptions are only for games i might try out cause i refuse to buy it at full price or discount price.

Worth it for game pass if you don’t have a decent gaming pc. Save me a lot of money this year.

This! Can't beat the price for the full package. It will be my primary device for the newer games that use the latest features this generation, my vintage PC is for the 360/X1 era stuff that doesn't have good current-gen patches and maybe the occasional Sony release with some FSR.

Maybe a dumb question, but can you just go into the store and buy it, or do in-store pickup?

I don’t honestly know which Walmart it’s coming from, the order page doesn’t specify and there’s a half dozen Supercenters within 10 miles of where I live (+2 Neighborhood Markets)

plus I figure the most likely explanation is they oversold their stock and it’s probably going to get canceled, I wish they’d either deliver it or cancel the order already because I‘m worried about porch pirates so I’ve been hanging around home all day (admittedly I didn’t have any other plans today so it wasn’t exactly a massive inconvenience)

It might be a pain in the ass, but on a web browser in the upper left corner you select 'Pickup' for 'how do I want my items'. Then search up "Series X" and it will show results. Then go back to the upper left corner and go through the stores one by one for that zip code and the search results will update to the $349 price with 'Pickup Today' when you land on a store that has stock. Then call them and see if you can have them hold it, or confirm that an in-store pickup can be done. Then just cancel your other order once you have it in hand.

Prices are still the same as always in Canada. (Around $600)

This is precisely why I came close to buying one last year. Red Dead Redemption at 4K sounded awesome.

Almost bought one, but backed away. I will say that 360 compatability is very compelling. I just think it'd collect dust.

Red Dead was always the best reason for me personally to buy one. But I had to tell myself it's a stupid idea to buy a console for backwards compatible games I wanted to play.

Unfortunately if I ever want to do that, with Microsoft saying fuck you to physical game owners, it may have been in my best interest to buy one. Oh well, too late now. Hopefully the revised console with have a disc drive option and then after that they can do whatever the fuck they want with the XS successor.

they’re all sold out at this point

Any update?
still no movement 😔 based on this article I found, if it’s just delayed & not canceled I should hear from them offering me the chance to switch it to pickup which I’ll definitely take advantage of to hopefully get it tomorrow instead

welp at 9pm Walmart finally confirmed my order is delayed & obviously won’t be delivered today, no option to change it to pickup as of now unfortunately & no new ETA either 😕 but at least it’s not canceled (yet)

That sucks, I'm sorry mate. I hope it gets to you as quick as it can.

I ended up cancelling my order. Reason ended up being I just don't need another device sitting around despite having some uses for it. I've tried to practice minimalism for years now and anytime I stray from it I find that my anxiety gets worse so I decided the negatives outweigh the positives.

Picked mine up this evening. Curbside pickup was weirdly slow, and the associate had to enter my birthday to close out the order due to Diablo IV being rated M. Kinda funny, I don't remember the last time anyone asked to make sure I was at least 17. 😂

Upon returning home, I cut a bit of the plastic wrap off that they put on it, and was glad to see they didn't mess up and give me a console only package. Now it sits under the tree until more holiday responsibilities are taken care of, but I'm pretty sure I will be hooking it up well before the 25th.

Nice. Have fun, hell of a price.

Thanks!

thanks, well I got another email last night saying it would be delivered today but so far no change on the order page which still just says it’s delayed 😕 at this point even if it does arrive today I don’t think I’m going to have anytime to play it because they will have taken the entire weekend to move the stupid box <~10 miles 😒

$350 wtf. Thats an insane price and crazy they need to go that low to actually sell their stock.

A $150 price cut with a free game for a 3 year old console. Yikes. Not sure if this is official promotion or retailers just trying to get rid of their stock.
Remember when Nintendo had to discount the GameCube to $99?

Sony always wins. It is useless to resist.

Was considering as a modern way to play my Xbox and 360 collection, plus a cheap way to experience obscure games on the Bone. But I don't think it would actually get that much use. Aside from a handful of games that aren't available on PC (which I could prob just emulate) there would be no point really, and I'm all in on PS4/5.

Great deal if you are an Xbox fan though.

GameCube made money at $99, back in those days cost cutting and volume efficiencies drastically reduced cost to build those machines. And candidly at $199 GameCube launched too high. Iwata said that was one his biggest regrets was holding out too long and not discounting GameCube sooner.

No, that dude doesn't know what he is talking about. It's called MSRP for a reason. The manufacturer can suggest the retail price, retailers can set a different price if they want. Walmart used to reduce the price of all new games by $8-10. You think suppliers or distributors cared? No, that money came out of Walmart's margin. If Walmart wants to clear stock of something, they can do it, they already own the product.

are you not familiar with MAPs? manufacturers have a lot of control over what prices their things can be sold for & it’s not just through the MSRPs
