Yea, personally I've just grown out of the art style.
A bit of a shame as the series has so much potentional but these art decisions hold it back in the West. They must really believe it's the best compromise between western game design and eastern art style to appeal broader but honestly it has higher upside in the west so it's a a little strange to me
We must have played completely different versions of XBX, since that was not the case at all.

The first game had plenty of armor that showed of the characters assets, and guess what? They were completely optional.

I don't understand his comment in regards to the story either.
This is a Tetsuya Takahashi game we are talking about. If he said he was making game with a stronger focus on narrative and plot, then it's fairly a given to know what to expect based on his previous work with Xenogears, Saga, and the first Xenoblade.
I have no idea why that one would assume because character designs are what they are, they have a reflection on the actual story direction, Especially considering said director we are talking about in the first place. That's one hell of a logical leap / non sequitur to make.

2 might or might not be connected to the first one somehow, we don't really know yet. The first one doesn't really leave that much room for a sequel at least seemingly, but it's always possible.
X isn't really connected, though there are quite a lot of references. But no plot connections or anything. Unless they somehow tie it to 1 and 2, but that seems pretty unlikely.
Since you have both, I would recommend you play them in order, XC is much more character and main story focused, while XCX has a lot of improvements in terms of exploration and movement as well as much more options for combat. There aren't any direct connections between the games other than some winks and nudges that could be made deeper than they appear. So you could play them separately and be fine.

Seeing as this game's numbering is literally Xenoblade 2 and not just additional subtitle or letter much like X, it's remains to be seen if this is a direct sequel that takes place after the first Xenoblade, and I mean as in

Refer to my previous image. We have that Vandham and BLADE reference and who knows, the cat ear people could be the same race as Celica. Heck, maybe even more tied to it as Duckroll said and that they're a beastman type of tribe.
Could pull some strings with the Celica / Rock relationship thing and maybe, this is the Rock's planet or something (grasping at straws with the last one but you never know!)?

I'm straight up gobsmacked at trying to understand GAF's logic sometimes. This thread reminds me of the Valkyria Revolution reveal thread wherein people spent an inordinate amount of time complaining about the antagonist having large breasts and lamenting how the game is so "anime" compared to the previous one(s).
In both cases all entries into the respective series had anime inspired aesthetics. What's more, lamenting that a Japanese produced game, made by a Japanese team, too closely resembles Japanese animation is absurd.

It's really not connected to Xenoblade X. Come off it. I don't even need confirmation of that to know that it's clearly not connected to Xenoblade X.

There is 'blade' in Xenoblade 2 because Takahashi clearly likes to have the 'blade' in the games title reference a part of the story, not because it's got anything to do with XCX. How have you not put two and two together?
I'm beginning to think Xenoblade fans just see what they want to see.
Xenoblade had a good setting and a nice twist towards the end but everything else was generic shonen journey with not so inspired dialogues. It was a far cry in complexity from what Xenogears and Xenosaga had done narratively. It was probably a better game though. I still liked it a lot.
Xenoblade X has a completely different narrative structure to the previous titles, I wouldn't say it's necessarily worse, it fits the open world structure better but it feels like a first episode of something much greater and more similar to the first Takahashi games in scope. It had a lot of potential in my opinion. A lot of problems too.
This one....I'm not convinced yet.

I expect that to be the Japanese release. There is no way that could possibly be a worldwide release date unless they have already been working on the localization for some time now. I still expect it to be delayed though.
To be fair, those breasts straddle the border between watermelons and dwarf planets. Selvaria, Juliana and Riela were already huge, did they really have to go bigger?

Xenogears wanted to be the star wars of videogames (they wanted to make like 7 or 8 chapters) and they couldn't even finish one. I love the game, for me its in the holy trinity of jrpgs but it didnt work

Granted, the cat ear people in the artwork for 2 could be a different race or just headgear as people claim... I dunno. When I first saw it, I thought of Celica. Probably alone on that one but at least worth pointing it out.
There's a Vandham in every xeno game. Xeno games also tend to have similar elements despite not all of them taking part on the same universe. I guess there could be a chance at some M. Night Shyamalan shit pulling all three Xenoblade games on the same universe, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Yeah, which is fine. As someone said earlier as well... there could, hopefully, be a chance we'll see either an expansion of Xenoblade X or maybe a sequel too. I think the two type of games can co-exist. Unless you have people like Sky hell bent on destroying it. ;P
Vandham has been a staple Xeno character since Xenogears. Blade is to tie in 'blade' in the games' title. The cat ears girl in XB2 has different kinds of ears to that of Celica.

Yeah the writing took a hit when Soraya left, some of the best material in those first games are hers. Takahashi is still responsible for most of the themes, concepts and ideas, it's crystal clear, but I'd wager that most of the writing is left to others (and it shows). And since the Xenosaga debacle they've clearly shifted focus: the two Blades are clearly "game first, story second" kind of games. Which is great in it's own way, but with a giant like Nintendo behind them I'd hoped for that interconnected complex saga that they were trying to do since Xenogears.
Instead we a have a self-contained game, a first episode of a potential new series and most likely a spiritual sequel to the self-contained game. Maybe they were burned too much by what happened with Xenosaga, but Jesus....

I've seen it happen on occasion when an announcement for a game is made, people tend to assume said development for the game started briefly and don't consider a project has been in the works for a period of time.
I believe Takahashi said that Xenoblade X is a sort of groundwork for the workings of upcoming projects, so for possibility of Xenoblade 2 to come out so soon after X, it may be safe to say a lot of assets and the basic world building they created for their tools in X's development are going to be reused for Xenoblade 2 to expedite its development.
When I mean reusing assets, I don't mean just reusing the same world, but rather use the existing engine that was used to create Xenoblade X as a foundation with new shaders, map design, character and creature models.
Xenoblade X was announced very early in the Wii U's life. Basically prior to the console release. From 2013 with the initial teaser trailers to April 2015 to full release.
So if Xenoblade X can release from initial announcement to full game in a mere 3 years time. Assuming Monolith is indeed reusing the engine they already made from X and just adding and expanding upon it for Xenoblade 2, then two years is not some insurmountable task.

I honestly hope they spin Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X into two parallel lines. I wouldn't be at all disappointed if 3 years from now they announce a Xenoblade Chronicles X 2 which has the massive open world with more modern stylings and personal Mechs and such. And yes I'd want Sawano back.
