Well I bought my theater ticket. Now I just need to decide if I will watch it first on Saturday or wait until the theater. I am worried that it will end up being like when I saw The Day of the Doctor.

What happened when you saw The Day of the Doctor?

There are so many shows in the history of television that do that. It always ends up just coming off as an excuse to wear nice clothes and smoke on camera.

And talking real fast while drinking in a lounge bar while a pretty lady sings a dusky tune.

I'm just a sucker for genre episodes. I admire DW for mostly shying away from following TV conventions but I love when it leans deep into something thematically. I draw the line at a musical episode though.

Doctor Who could have a musical episode, it would just be contrived that there's a giant robotic Queen Bee who will lay eggs in your brain if you stop singing

Don't act like this is too dumb a first idea to actually make it to the screen, there have been worse

The Doctor and Clara get high off the same psychic pollen that he, Amy and Rory were on. The Dream Lord returns and puts them in a musical, where they communicate only by singing.

I'm with you on both counts. Those "noir" episodes are always campy/goofy/dumb, but I love the shit out of 'em anyway.

I remember checking back into Smallville after like, 3 or 4 seasons away, SPECIFICALLY to see their "noir" episode. It was just so silly.

The kind of things that you see from leaked comic-con trailers. Over-abundance of cheering and long drawn out laughter at inappropriate parts. The BBC preview bits before the presentation got loud cheers and applause when they saw Matt Smith. And again during the 3D opening with Matt Smith/David Tennant. It was such a huge mixture of applause, cheering, laughing that it was nearly impossible to make out what they were saying. That sort of thing happened constantly throughout the movie. Not only that, but a few people kept on turning on their Sonic Screwdrivers throughout the film, despite being told not to beforehand.

It's that sort of stuff that makes me not want to go to opening weekends of movies. People forget that it's not just a big fan event; others want to just see the film. Though it was cool to see a bunch of Doctor Who fans from all around the area come together to see it, from children to the elderly. I just wish I didn't have to re-watch it to catch all the dialogue I missed out on.

Yeah, a theater not too far from my house is showing it on the 25th :D Will I have the willpower to avoid the internet for 2 days?

Just finished season 7 and I've got a lot of questions. In the last episode there were some things i didn't understand.
River Song is dead but she appears in the doctor's grave is that a hologram of the TARDIS?
Also, who the hell is this man who control those white creepy things, i just saw the Christmas special of season 7 and he was introduced as the "great intelligence" if I'm not mistaken. And the thing Clara went into basically divided her into every piece of the doctor life in order to save him?
One last question, who is that old man in the end of the last episode, The doctor most deepest secret?

re: River Song is the version of her stored in the Library.

re: Old Man - The War Doctor - the iteration of the doctor between 8 and 9 that destroyed Gallifrey / Daleks / Ended the Time War. You find out a lot more about him in the next special The Day of the Doctor. (Isn't on Netflix yet)

River's consciousness was stored in a computer after she died, and it's the real TARDIS. The Doctor mentions that it's been sitting there for so long that more and more of it is starting to manifest in our universe over time (remember that the police box is just a portal to the rest of the ship which is much bigger and in another dimension).

Helped me! Thank you so much! Amazing how they connect things from long long time!

I see...thank you for the explanation.

Speaking of which, I rewatched "Name of the Doctor", and I still don't like the episode except for the very beginning and the very end.

I also watched "Day of the Doctor" and it's still great.

Tickets just became available for the showings at my local cinema, £14 each. Now to convince the girlfriend it's a good idea to go...

If you want a musical episode, then check out Big Finish's "...And The Pirates". Featuring Colin Baker, Bill Oddie amongst others.

The episode itself is 75 minutes... unless theatres show it at a lower frame rate (some will depending on their setup), in which case it'll be more like 78 or so.

Just rewatched "The Time of the Doctor", and wow, it's an even bigger mess than I remembered, especially just after watching "The Day of the Doctor".

Well that's a bummer. Been playing catchup after not really following most of the Matt Smith seasons (really like Smith as the Doctor, just took a break for whatever reason), and I just finished TDoTD today, which as a lifelong fan was a pretty nifty little indulgence.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
There are some really good individual moments in that episode, but overall it's not nearly up to Day of the Doctor standards.

I've actually come around quite a bit on TTOTD since my initial (quite scathing, for me) review.

There's still quite a lot that doesn't work, but I've really come to admire the scope of the thing, without the self-conscious "epic" that we often get. It's basically a series of vignettes depicting a man getting old, which is such an oddly bold and controversial idea for a regeneration story that I have to give it credit.

Just got done watching An Adventure in Space and Time (the documentary). That was... extremely sugar coated, wasn't it? Fan-service and cameos everywhere, tons of winking and nudging for Tennant and Smith fans (not to mention
Smith's cameo
right at the very end), and the story made it seem like three people ran the whole thing.

Still, I can't say I'm totally disappointed since I still was entertained, though it was definitely not the faithful historical document I was expecting. Any other good documentary on old who I might want to watch?

Also, I loved TToTD. I'm waiting for my brother to catch up with the show to watch the whole -of the Doctor sequence again with him. Name may be kind of messy, but the other two are top notch IMHO.

I suspect if you went in to it expecting a documentary you would be a bit disappointed I guess. It's more of a docu-drama, half way between both. Based on but willing to play with things a bit for drama (a few people were merged in to one character I think, stuff like that done just to make it a better story for TV). BBC Four did a fantastic one about Coronation Street which I think it clearly was inspired by.

If you want something more factual... more on the entire life of the show, but the Culture Show did a great 50th special.

The DVD extras on The Beginning box set are pretty comprehensive. I'm sure there are youtube vids that offer a more fan-based look, basically regurgitating what the DVD extras showed. The DVD's also have the production subtitles on many titles as well as audio commentaries from surviving cast and crew.

I think Day of the Doctor was my least favorite in the "of the Doctor" trilogy. It was also my least favorite of the 50th shows.

I liked it just fine, and I loved Hurt's War Doctor in particular, but there was a lot of stuff in it (the Elizabeth/Victorian and UNIT segments) that didn't do anything for me. I thought Name and Time, as messy as they were, were a lot more affecting.

I know quite a few people were down on Time of the Doctor but not only is it easily my favorite out of the 'of the Doctor' saga but it's also probably my favorite episode out of all of Who. I've watched it about 10 times now and I still love it to bits.

Now I'm terrible at actually explaining why I feel this way about it but I guess I just wanted to say that there are people like me out there? idk :p

Day of the Doctor > Time of the Doctor for me, but I liked both episodes anyway.

I would've dropped the Zygons and focused solely on the Time War. If not dropping them, then making the episode longer. Their resolution was poorly executed.

Yeah, the Zygons got in the way somewhat, but I still loved DotD. And the superb Night makes me want that Paul McGann episode, and for him to star in a DW video game.

Night > Day = Name > Time

I didn't get the Zygons either until a friend pointed out they were probably included more as a metaphor, it being an episode about change and being a different person and literal self reflection.

No way. You can't do an anniversary episode celebrating the history of Doctor Who without a silly rubber costume monster.

Reaching.
Not really. The Moffat era is absolutely dense with imagery and symbolism like that. Hell, that's one of the more obvious examples.

well that's great that you think that.

Well, the Zygons were also there as a gift for Tennant- they've always been his favourite monster, and he spoke in interviews after he left of his disappointment that he never got to face them.

That's fine, but Moffat needed to give them a better resolution than sitting in a room to talk. I thought that was the only off-moment about the episode.

well that's great that you think that.

In what way does the Zygons representing identity seem implausible?

Christ, it's barely even subtext.

I disagree, actually. If the whole point of the Zygon section was to highlight that conflicts could be resolved in a non-obvious way, getting the humans and the marauding alien invaders to sit down and negotiate was a fine resolution.

I suppose it's fair to say that you never really saw the aftermath. So like, are there currently actively Zygons around in Who Earth etc?

In other news, on my way to Cardiff. Making a little holiday out of the premiere this week.
