Saoirse Ronan Appreciation

Finally watched How I Live Now. Saorise simply is great in the role of the strong, yet lonely and vulnerable girl/young woman who somehow has to arrange herself with doing what she has to do and fails to surpress the longing for human connections. She was this type of character in Hannah, in Violet&Daisy, in Byzantium and in How I Live Now. I wonder how she would do in other scenarios...

Disclaimer: I avoided watching this soul/alien-film I forgot the name of, because everyone says it's so bad.

Filming of Brooklyn (which got in the way of Cannes, unfortunately -- that's two appearances John Crowley has ruined now :p) is currently wrapping up in NYC, it seems (more here):

I'd assumed the film would be released in Q4, at least as far as the UK/Ireland is concerned, but IMDb is saying 2015.

I don't think The Host is quite as bad as it's made out to be, but even so I wouldn't recommend it; as I've said before, if it weren't her first theatrical release in two years I may have regretted seeing it in theatres. On the flipside, while Byzantium and V&D didn't hit cinemas here, and I jumped through a few hoops to rent HILN from Amazon so I wouldn't have to trek into the city to see it, I did see The Grand Budapest Hotel in theatres last Friday and it was a lovely little, distinctly Wes film. Saoirse only has a handful of scenes, but I knew as much going in. (As an aside, I have to say that at first it was a little strange hearing Saoirse speak in her natural accent since GBH is the first film in which she's done so, unless you count Justin and the Knights of Valour).

So I saw GBH a couple weeks back, and after Tilda Swinton was only in it for a few moments, I was half-expecting Saoirse's part to end when it shows her on the bicycle. I'm glad she was in it way more, though. Cool movie. :)

It's not much but there are a bunch more set photos from the New York leg of Brooklyn here that I forgot to post last week. Filming can't be far off from wrapping up and at present the only upcoming project she has is Mary Queen of Scots.

Due to the preceding scene I thought that (actual spoiler)
it would be her head in the box
.

I enjoyed all the movies with her in it. She will be huge just like Jlaw eventually.

I want to visit the alternate universe in which she didn't lose out to Lawrence for the role of Katniss.

There's tons of kissing pictures from her latest movie, guess JaseC died out of jealousy. Me too, man, me too.

Probably for the best.

Well, I suppose that if she did have a meteoric rise to mainstream success she probably would have been passed over for Grand Budapest Hotel, so there's that. Plus she may have caught whatever illness Lawrence has that's causing her to no longer give a shit about acting. :p

Haha, no, not dead, just waiting for something to post. ;)

Edit: Speaking of Brooklyn, though, I need to buy the novel before the inevitable switch to a cover based on the film (in my experience they're always worse than those that came before).

No news (I wish Mary Queen of Scots would get a concrete start date already), but here's her bit part from this week's episode of Robot Chicken.

Edit: Cartoon Network filed a copyright notice instead of just forcing me to acknowledge the third-party content, the buggers. If I remember, I'll redo the video later this week (I don't think I have it anymore) and host it somewhere else.

Hah, that was a bit funny. Did she provide all the voices or just one? If it's the latter, she's got some range!

The credits didn't mention who she voiced, but from the sounds of things I'd say she just voiced Sasha at the start and Draculaura at the end.

Grand Budapest Hotel is finally releasing here (Brazil), but of course it's going to stay in theaters for only six days and only in four movie theaters on my city. Yay.

The film received a wider release here due to its surprise success in the US, which was nice. I was expecting to have to trek up to the city to see it.

She is stunning and has some great skills as an actress. I hope she has an excellent career

I think she'll finally nab that long-overdue second Oscar nom with Mary Queen of Scots... assuming it finally gets off the ground.

Finally saw The Grand Budapest Hotel! And oh my, what a splendid movie.

And as you guys have said, it is quite strange to hear her talk with her natural accent hehe.

She attended the Miu Miu Resort Collection 2015... thing in Paris (couple more here):

On the far right in the second photo are (left to right) Gemma Arterton (Byzantium) and Emily Browning (The Host).

Yeah, in Justin the Knights of Valour (which is as bad as it seems) it took me a while to grow accustomed to it, haha. It just felt weird. :p I'd assumed she'd be using her natural accent again in Brooklyn since her character is Irish, but IIRC she's said she changed it a bit since said character isn't from Dublin.

Edit: I just realised this thread turned one a couple of weeks ago. Happy belated, thread. ;)

She was in another episode of Robot Chicken, as the voices of Aurora, Jasmine and Merida (Edit: according to IMDb, at least -- the Robot Chicken Wikia disagrees). The episode aired a few weeks ago but I'd assumed she did just the one.

Fun fact: she was actually set to play a Disney Princess at one point... sort of. The project was later canned. She was earlier in talks to play Snow White in Mirror Mirror, but producers decided (correctly) that she was too young to be paired with Armie Hammer, so the role ultimately went to Lily Collins instead.

Ah, that was funnier than the last one.

I do think Jasmine's voice is Saoirse's, not sure about the other ones though.

Also, damn, everyone but JaseC is getting banned here.

Yeah, Jasmine is distinctly Saoirse, but I'm not entirely convinced the other two are her also. While the Wikia site for Robot Chicken makes no mention of who voiced Merida (or Jasmine, funnily enough), Madison Dylan is listed as the voice of Aurora, but I couldn't find anything to corroborate this.

Also, damn, everyone but JaseC is getting banned here.

Haha, it is amusing that the last three people to post in the thread were banned. Maybe it's cursed. :p

As an aside, I finally watched Justin and the Knights of Valour in its entirety the other day, and again, as you would expect of a low-budget CGI flick aimed at kids, it's not very good. I'd probably recommend it over The Host, though. ;)

So far I've had people think it's a worm or some sort of illicit drug, but in truth it's merely a nacho. The post that linked to the page made some inferences based on other recent photos the user uploaded and concluded it's a pub in Scotland, which, if true, may mean that the wheels on Mary Queen of Scots are finally turning. Saoirse did say in an interview earlier in the year that filming should begin at some point in the second half.

Love how the explanation subtly changed into news of her new movie.

Interesting to know!

Sadly the speculation was off the mark:

If there's no news by 2015 I'll be surprised if it (MQOS) gets off the ground, and on a related note I think the slippery start date has had a rather large impact on Saoirse's slate as, ignoring her couple of guest appearances on Robot Chicken, it's been about four months since Brooklyn wrapped and more than half a year since her involvement in something has been announced (Stockholm, Pennsylvania shortly before shooting began) -- well, that or she just hasn't been getting any bites, but I'm not going to start worrying yet.

As an aside, only a few photos from the ISPCC event she attended have surfaced and most of them are rather horrible quality, but here are a couple of nicer ones, posted by her stylist:

When I saw her in City of Ember I knew she would grow up and be a good actress and be in all kinds of movies. In my opinion she can act very well but has taken a few terrible roles. She'd probably be a young leading lady in more major films otherwise.

Appearance wise she's pretty much perfect. She hasn't really made a big breakout movie yet, but I'm sure it's coming.

City of Ember is a fun film. Pity it bombed. Everybody was expecting The Host to lead her to mainstream success, but the film ended up falling flat on its face and I think this has created a bit of a pall that's still yet to dissipate. A couple of her fans on IMDb seem convinced that she's been working on Episode VII in secret, but the "evidence" is circumstantial at best so it strikes me as nothing but wishful thinking.

Reportedly she was who Joss Whedon had in mind when developing his take on Scarlet Witch (the rumour that she actually passed on an offer is false). As bummed as I am that it didn't pan out, Elizabeth Olsen would have been my pick as the next best thing, so I'm glad it landed in her lap.

Edit: It's not much, but Board Bia has released a new Origin Green promo video. (Edit^3: And a BTS pic.)

Edit edit: Wonderland (a UK fashion magazine) has published its interview on its website. Accompanying the article is a photoshoot (more at the link):

Yeah, nothing particularly noteworthy has surfaced since so I've just been editing the post (I was going to bump the thread with the Wonderland interview, but it was much shorter than I was expecting). Speaking of her black hair, though, Lost River was originally set to hit theatres in Denmark later this month but WB has apparently pushed this back to April. I'm guessing the generally negative reviews out of TIFF saw a change in plans. Oh well, on the bright side maybe it'll serve as a better-placed stopgap on the road to Brooklyn and Stockholm, PA*.

* Who knows what's going on with Mary Queen of Scots. With the year now drawing to a close I'm beginning to think Working Title has quietly killed it off, but I'd love to be wrong.

Edit: Speaking of SPA, here's a photo from a recent ADR session:

No project news as of late, but she was on The Late Late Show last night, along with a couple of others, to raise awareness for the ISPCC's funding campaign.

Edit: Mary Queen of Scots is still alive, apparently (or at least it was a month ago):

Edit edit: Stockholm, PA will be premiering at Sundance, which kicks off January 22nd.

If this thread hits one month without being bumped by somebody else I'm going to let it wither.

Anyway, Sundance seems filled with Saoirse. Awesome. After that, it's a long time before her next movie, right?

Maybe. After Lost River was met with disinterest at Cannes, reports surfaced that WB may sell it off, however Brooklyn has retained Lionsgate UK's/Transmission Films' interest. Other than MQoS (which still seems like a wild card), though, she has nothing on her plate as far as future projects are concerned, which is a bit worrisome -- it's been almost a year since her involvement in something was announced. That being said, there's a distinct possibility she's been reluctant to accept roles for fear of scheduling conflicts.

Late edit: Oh, I misunderstood your post. Yeah, after Sundance, it'll likely be at least a year before she's seen in another film --- MQoS has no filming schedule at present and even assuming she does another indie flick early in the year to pass the time it could very well skip the Q4 circuit as Stockholm did. On the bright side, Brooklyn seems like a shoe-in for a theatrical release and Lost River should at least hit digital/physical video, so there'll be something for us non-festival plebs to watch in the meantime.

You really should consider multiposts instead of editing. I don't see when you edit the threads and therefore don't click on it.

I bump the thread when there's particularly noteworthy news. Premiere dates aren't something I file under that category, although in searching the thread for Brooklyn's distributors I realised I bumped it when How I Live Now got new stills, so... oops, I should have the done the same the other day. ;) I'll try to remember that in the future.

She does seem to get these kind of prices often, but it doesn't help her scoring the big roles.

Yeah, I've said it before but I think The Host releasing to grand disinterest did quite a number on the likelihood of her finding mainstream success in the near future. TGBH is actually her highest-grossing film to date, and by a relatively significant margin (~$50m), but its success can hardly be attributed to her involvement, and on that note I don't like her chances of actually winning the award due to the simple fact that it was a rather limited role.

Still waiting for her appearing in an Lars von Trier movie...

Lost River is about halfway there, haha. I'd like to see her do another action-oriented film, personally (pity that Snow White retelling-turned-kung fu flick was axed).

Yeah, I'm kinda bummed that becuase of The Host, she might not make it big. She's in a good position nonetheless.

Sundance has posted schedule information for Brooklyn and Stockholm, PA. I know I said the other day that premiere dates aren't something I consider bump-worthy... but I changed my mind, plus the synopsis for the latter offers more insight into the film's story, something which the one-sentence overview on IMDb lacks.

Stockholm, Pennsylvania premieres on the 23rd:

A young woman is reunited with her parents, Marcy and Glen, after being abducted 17 years earlier. Raised in a suburban basement and renamed Leia by her kidnapper, Ben, she was told the outside world had come to an end, and now she must completely reconceive her perception of it. The bright 22-year-old is also forced to reconcile her new life with parents who are virtual strangers and her past life of captivity with Ben, on whom she was completely dependent. As Leia’s growing alienation leads to her longing for Ben, Marcy slowly implodes in her attempts to reclaim her child, and the notion of what it is to be free is called into question.

In a haunting, nuanced performance, Saoirse Ronan is quietly spellbinding as a young woman whose entire basis of knowledge is shattered and her concept of home erased. Writer/director Nikole Beckwith, in an impressive debut feature, strips away the sensational tabloid fodder of the narrative to examine the origins of self, identity, and the power of language.

Brooklyn premieres a few days later, on the 26th:

Set on opposite sides of the Atlantic, John Crowley’s Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey, a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

Based on Colm Toibin’s acclaimed novel, director Crowley and writer Nick Hornby craft a deeply effective, sweeping romance. The sumptuous filmmaking vividly depicts a rapidly progressing world. Surrounded by a stellar cast of supporting characters, Saoirse Ronan gives a captivating performance as the luminous Eilis. The heart of this highly accomplished work evokes a timeless portrait of leaving home and the excruciating decisions one must make.
