SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

It's not a good time to be a zombie city sim genre fan. People don't realize it, but we're a big silent market just waiting to be appealed to. The zombie city sim genre needs its own Star Citizen. A kickstarter would surely bring in tens of millions!
All joking aside, looking at what we've seen so far, it's going to be a really long time before anyone else, even Maxis, is even able to create something that can top this.

I want it so much.

To anyone who has noticed, or to those who are playing the game:

Do cargo trucks generate noise pollution, and are they detrimental to residential areas? If so, that would be one argument against zoning residential and commercial right next to each other.

I was thinking that once offices are unlocked, it would be good to zone residential, commercial, and office space all in the same area, but there has to be some sort of drawback to that.

I dug out my copy of SimCity 4 and reinstalled it, didn't play for long but I still have my old region. Would be nice if I could've added it to Origin for convenience sake but, eh. Didn't play it for long though, still had a ton of room to work on things in my main city but I don't want to spend a ton of time on it and get burned out before this game releases.

Maxis/EA should be embarrassed even more so if this game fully delivers.

Honestly, the game had me excited already, but I'm getting all the more pumped now that I'm seeing just how many other people are excited for it. It's giving me a lot of hope for the modding scene, which, as long as the foundation is solid, can give the game legs for years.

I think passing the time on a different genre would be good to prevent burnout. Perhaps something like FTL, DBZ Xenoverse, or XCOM would be my suggestion. (based on not knowing anything at all about your tastes lol)

Yeah, I have no shortage of options with my current backlog, heh.

I don't mean those type of skyscrapers, more like the Empire State Building type buildings in SC4 that do nothing

Oh, those are landmarks, though. They increase the desireability of the surrounding area. It's kinda of weird having a building be a landmark that doesn't have workers or house people, but whatever.

Oh yeah it was landmark. It would be nice if it did have working people and a few ones living there. Would make it a bit more realistic

I recall hearing that landmarks and things like that help increase tourism? But don't quote me on that.

Ok!

Aw man, it's so frustrating seeing people struggle with fixing their gridlocked cities. It's initially so funny to see them brooding over several info views, trying to work out what went wrong, but over time and with increasing desperation their attempts to fix the situation become increasingly inane.

Your city is ablaze, choking in trash and filled with criminals and dead people because there's a huge-ass traffic jam through the city that extends all the way off the map. Get off the hospital info view, all buildings are blue, nothing to see here. No, installing more hospitals, police departments, landfills and fire brigades will not fix this. If anything, the added vehicles will exacerbate the problem - namely, that the main street through your city with 20k+ citizens that also connects several sizeable industry sectors to your highway and cargo station is still only a puny two-lane alley.

No, upgrading the two-lane alley to the variant with trees does not help, it only reduces noise. Yes, this really means you'll have to upgrade the street to a bigger size. No, you will need to make space for the additional lanes in bigger streets, meaning your thoughtful, but sadly too naive early-stage layout is now completely fucked.

No, don't randomly connect parts of the city to the highway. Also, more puny streets means more junctions and thus more traffic jams.... Please, put away the management panel. Don't try to fix it with increased spending, that only increases the amount of vehicles. STEP AWAY FROM THE BUS ROUTE PLANNER YOU IMBECILE. *insert nervous breakdown*

(It really doesn't help that the game doesn't copy over the zoning data when moving areas around due to street upgrades, or that street upgrades show up as impossible if the affected buildings are utility buildings like hospitals or landfills. )

Can't wait to play this. Looking forward to doing things correctly. Obviously my cities will be flawless from the very get-go. Obviously.

Oh god, my citizens will be so fucked with me as a mayor/city planner.

I have fun when other people have fun. Some of you guys yesterday were so pissed at someone elses city planning skills that I couldn't understand it.

You know you will be fucked when you will get the game and you will learn by fixing the fuck ups you make - or doing the opposite

I wonder if buildings like harbors, airports and railroad stations are modular and can be increased in size. Would love to have a huge airport outside my city or a large central station inside the town.

Or, after many hours of Anno playing, a giant harbor buzzing with activity of ships.

I had so much fun with CiM2 despite some late game crashes due to huge numbers of lines and... wait for it, lack of autosave >_<

That said, I'm all in - I really enjoyed the CiM games and trust they'll do well

Oh crap! Missed one day and now i have to catch up with 10 pages.

One thing i realised was that i'd preordered the game without really thinking about if my laptop could handle it. I'm hoping that since it can run Sims 4 and the last SimCity this should be ok.

They are not, but I think this is something that can be easily modded in. I loved making giant ports and airports in Simcity 4.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Preordering seems super silly though - wait for reviews and feedback, guys!

I understand the never pre-order anything ever sentiment, and like many others, I've been burned in the past before and swore I'd never never pre-order anything ever again, but I watched a stream for more than eight hours yesterday, and all it did was make me want to play the game even more than before. If the game can give me at least that amount of entertainment, for only $20, there's really no reason not to. I can't believe they're selling this game so cheap, they must be kicking themselves.

FYI Skyestorme is one of the better city building LPers out there. If you wanna see someone who knows what he's doing, watch him.

Oh wow, glad he got it early, he done some amazing stuff building games previously. Can't wait to watch this later.

Yeah, landmarks in SimCity not employing people always annoyed the shit out of me, I think I eventually downloaded a mod for SC4 that made them places to work.

Honestly, based on their actions, sometimes I feel like EA don't give a shit either way.

True, as long as they get paid and put out their PR BS they don't while driving developers/studios into the ground.

Watched a couple of quill18 episodes, which was enough to tip me over the edge and pre-order to get that nice GMG discount.

I've always wanted to play a city builder, but haven't tried any besides Tropico 4 which didn't grab me (too much politics, and a bit obtuse at the beginning). Really looking forward to this!

Haven't gotten into a city building game since Sim City on the snes. I spent all of yesterday watching all of quill18's stream and then his lets play videos. I need this game.

i watched some videos and what bugged me was that the vehicles on the road disappear if you zoomed out alittle or move away from the road. it really breaks the immersion. is there any option to make it persistant?

it probably can be modded but will add decreased performance

I bought the game early for two reasons:

1. I've watched five hours of streams and YouTube video now, heard tons of positive praise for the game from people who are playing it, and I like what I've both seen and heard.

2. By buying it now at GMG I saved $9 and got the game for $21. That deal expires in a few days, and I felt the game was worth a $21 risk for me.

So I disagree, pre-ordering now is argumentatively not super silly. It's actually the exact opposite of that if the game seems at all interesting to you!

Wow, looking surprisingly solid judging from the videos posted so far, I'm impressed by the fluidity and the presentation in general considering it's not a bid-budget title

There's one thing from SimCity 2013 that I will definitely miss though

Huh, I haven't noticed that, perhaps someone had a graphic setting turned down somewhere?

I'm watching a stream of Cities: Skylines right now where the streamer has the SimCity 4 sound track playing in the backround, it's a surreal experience.

Its intentional devs has some comments on why but i dont remember the reasons.

It is intentional. Please, read - http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?836809-Does-cars-disapears-even-not-in-traffic-jam&p=18900912&viewfull=1#post18900912

Check the link because this is just a very VERY small portion of the explanation:

Alright, let's try to get some clear concise information out there.

What's the issue here?
Cities: Skylines has a mechanic that will teleport vehicles to their destination if they can't reach their destination due to extreme traffic problems.
EDIT: Goods/cargo will attempt to redeliver. Citizens teleport to destination.

Why was this mechanic put in?
The mechanic prevents traffic jams from getting so out of hand that it destroys your entire city's traffic simulation, which would shut down your whole city.

....

Can we still have traffic jams?
Of course! This mechanic isn't eliminating traffic problems, or magically curing them, and it's certainly not a cheat. It's an emergency feature.

I did some tests, and I had traffic congestion filling up 5 whole intersections in a city. Not a single vanishing car. I tested again on a highway, 67 cars backed up... no disappearing.

Your traffic problems aren't going away because of this feature.

I think this are two different things.
One is (some few) cars warping to their destination when they are too long in traffic, to help not escalate it too much.

What was commented on above is that car have a limited draw distance. I hope there will be a mod which will allow you to configure this...

Actually kudoboi and DEO3 are talking about some cars vanishing from the screen and then disappearing entirely as you zoom out. It's pretty standard LOD stuff, they're still simulated, just not rendered.

Just got through part 3 and he keeps saying water is fine when he has a building that is not getting water. It's giving me a headache. He even puts his cursor right on it when he's placing schools.
Yh his planning is good but he tends to over-explain and misses to many obvious things.
