SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

From the few streams Ive watched, as long as you build slow and keep intersections to a minimum, you will be fine. It looks like its pretty easy to start as long as you don't get over ambitious and go crazy building out.

If you really suck bad, there is also infinite money mode to help you get a grasp on the game mechanics.

haha i'm totally shit so i'll probably play with that for a bit

thank you :)

gonna preorder when I get home!

There's no multiplayer of any kind right? Lirik said he thought that there was some co op stuff but the steam page doesn't mention anything about it so I'm assuming he's wrong. I have a lot of steam money saved and nothing to really spend it on so I'm thinking about picking this up.

So many videos to watch, but want to wait for release... Looks really good though, happy with my pre-order.

Are reviews out on release day?

Can someone confirm or talk about the existence of skyscrapers and generally really dense cities? I didn't like how you had to mod in additional density classes of buildings for Sim City 4; I want to build a dense metropolis dammit! That, to me, is even more important than having a big plot of land to deal with (though that's always great too)

You unlock higher density residential, commercial, and industrial as you gain population.

Cities: Skylines |OT| Sim City 5

It may be brutal, but I still think it should absolutely be the OT. :)

Quill's tutorial videos are great! The road tutorial really showcases just how much variety and power we'll have building roads, I think it might even be better than Simcity 2013's road tools were. And the Map Editor tutorial, WOAH! That map editor is fantastic! And you can even export graymaps from it too! CO has just created the best map editor for Simcity 4 while also making the editor for their own game, LOL. That editor truly impressed me.

Watching Escapist's stream right now, yeah this game is just fine. Going to eat my supper while I take it all in....

Jesus Christ this Escapist dude's city, and he's only at 64k of the 1,000,000 population cap.

And only 3 of the possible 9 tiles.

This game has the opposite problem as Sim City, where they underrepresent the population for the size of the city instead of overinflating the numbers. This helps them more accurately simulate the movement of the agents vs SimCity's asinine "everyone picks a new job every day" system and transit systems that hold no set routes.

Along with the lower numbers, Skyline's simulation is also helped by the fact that it isn't forced into a rigid day-night cycle. I haven't seen too many people complaining that the days move fast than the people do, but I'm sure some people will once they realize what's going on.

Never thought of that, I wonder if the modders can throw in Day/Night without hurting performance too much. (maybe slow down the simulation?)

Yeah, no day/night cycle and no rush hour style traffic. I think that is fine in a larger city simulation game like this. Dealing with traffic to that level of detail is better left to games like Cities in Motion.

Day/night will almost certainly get added in a DLC but only as an aesthetic thing.

Colossal Order's CEO said the lack of a day/cycle was a design decision because of that issue. She said if there is enough feed back, they may add day/night, but it would most likely be purely aesthetic. Personally, I hope they add weather. Make players deal with weather related problems, like snow fucking up transportation, floods, rising sea levels, droughts, wild fires, ect.

Can't see the streams because I'm at work, how's the framerate?

The Escapist guy just stated that he has almost the same rig as the recommended system requirements at his house (i5, GTX 660), and he can run it on essentially high or max without any framerate issues (50,000 person city). Supposedly Colossal Order has well-optimized this build of Unity for their purposes.

Of course we won't know for sure how the system holds up under real serious load until someone builds a 1,000,000 citizen, 9 tile city. Remember, this will be much more reliant on a good CPU, as you can always drop down the graphics, but it's very hard to dumb down the simulation without breaking it (and turning it into Sim City 5 :p)

Weather would be good, it could slow down traffic or reduce happiness if it lasts long enough. Droughts and wildefires I suppose could also work....just reduce the water level coming into the zone (and water table), and adapt the current fire mechanic to work on open tiles that the player owns.

As for the day night cycle, I wonder how fast they could reasonably run the simulation if they were to simulate everything in real-time? Right now it looks like each person's "day" last about 1.5-2 weeks of simulation time, so compressing that down to real-time might make progress in the city a very slow and arduous process. It would be pretty though.

Do you have a link for his stream? I can't find it anywhere.

I would bet money if there is a day/night cycle, it will not effect the simulation at all. Calling it a cycle might be a stretch, as I wouldn't be surprised if you could toggle the time of day to your liking. Perhaps you can define how long your days and nights last.

I didn't think I would let the hype get to me, but I went ahead and pre-order the game. It has been a long time since I played a game like this one, so I can't wait. :)
I still remember being all excited for Simcity 5 (it was one of the many reasons why I wanted to build a gaming PC), until the last several months of it's release date, where I realized it was not the game I wanted to play.

WELP, I watched most of Quill's videos, a little of Arumba's vids, and glanced at a few streams, and I'M SOLD. Just bought Cities Skylines at GMG for $21. I broke my rule, I pre-ordered, and I'm super dandy fine with that based on what I've seen. If I could play it now I'd be calling in sick tomorrow.

I have no idea if it's going to surpass and replace Simcity 4 for me, but it looks like it's got a great shot, and it's certainly going to be worth $21 to explore the chance of it. This game has me literally giddy with excitement. That map editor alone will be worth it for me, as if the game loses my interest I can always use the damn map editor to make great maps for good old Simcity 4 anyway, LOL!!!!

One more week now....

It's definitely a very safe pre order. Super cheap and we have already seen a ton of gameplay out in the wild. Very excited for this game!

Please be good. Pleasebegood. Plsbgud.

I had planned to spend so many hours on Sim City 2013 and it wasn't worthy. I'm ready to invest in another simulation game, but I'll wait to read reviews.
