SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

Any good ones you can recommend? Skye Storme is going painfully slow.

? He almost always has the game at full speed. It's about as fast as this game goes I think lol.

I tried watching the Mathas videos. I like his personality enough, but his city is painfully boring.

This is my opinion too. Mathas doesn't seem to know how to do roads well at all. But he's entertaining enough. I really like Skye though. He seems to know how to do it with style.

Skye also seems to have put up 10 episodes in 2 days so far. And Mathas is up to 6. That's a nice chunk of content. I've now watched both of them completely.

When SimCity came out I loved watching BDoubleO play it. He was having a lot of fun for a while and I was enjoying it. It looks like he is now playing Skylines too. And was also playing XXL as well. That's a lot of city simulation. And a lot of stuff for me to watch. (Just the Skylines stuff. I used to watch his Minecraft stuff a long time ago but fell out a while ago and couldn't remember where I left off.)

I just had an idea for a mod.... Drug labs.

You would have a random chance that one specific house would suddenly draw a LOT more power than normal and the only way to deal with it is to have enough police in the city. If not dealt quickly enough the meth lab has a chance of blowing up half the neighborhood.

Also... random pot plantations in the middle of your farms lol.

Watching Etalyx stream this on Twitch.

Looks impressive, what Sim City should have become.

Not sure it actually is that good, but it looks like it has all the components.

Heh. Would anyone from Cali want to move all the way to Finland?

I've had developer friends who have moved to NW Europe, yes. You go where the work is.

every stream I watched had the worst road planners

roads are a weak part of this game or the players just did not know how to use them

I think the tools are rather good for roads with the only problem I've seen being merging elevated highways/bridges at certain points and the bizarre lack of 4 lane variants of one-ways. For bridges it seems like once the draw tool generates the suspension struts and such (I apologize, no idea what they're actually called) that specific section becomes incompatible with a merge attempt. There are definitely some idiosyncrasies with it.

Still trying to find a way to borrow $40 so I can preorder this.

City builders are my secret kryptonite. I like them more than shooters.

It also stems from the fact that the simplest way to maximize space, as a straight up grid, leaves you with intersections that are 8 blocks apart. Not a lot of space.

Did anyone even use public transport? Almost all large cities have some sort of public transport for a reason.

saw one using buses and subway line
still had red traffic at some corners

he was more concerned with his sewage issues he could have put in more train routes but only made one loop would like to see what happens if you made a full subway grid

the poop water in the river is nasty there has to be a better way

I've seen some attempts at using it, but those I've watched have been pretty dumb with how they've planned their bus routes.

And I should really stop watching people play this game, it's just making me hunger for it more.

OK so I've completely slept on this and know absolutely nothing about it. Was completely burned by Simcity but love city builders. Can't watch videos at work, are there any good preview articles out there summarising this game? Does it avoid the missteps of Simcity?

I watched 20 hours of streams by now, so I feel informed enough to give you an opinion without linking a preview (that I havent read any of anyway).

In short: Yes, it seems like the dev team was like: "Well, damn, SimCity burned huh. How about... we take the concepts they were striving for and just... make the game good?"

And then did exactly that.

This game is bonkers good, with years of planned support, free modding, an utterly fantastic traffic management component, zoning, the standard game being 9x the size of SimCity (with modding up to 25), more organic city space building, different city themes (buildings & vegetation), a map editor, public transport, many many simulation elements, and tons more.

So how do I get a deal at GMG? It's still showing $29.99 for me.

Edit: Also I'm a little worried because Unity is hit or miss for me on my top of the line Retina MacBook Pro. Half the time games don't run. They'll crash at load and never let me play. I am so worried that it'll happen with this too and I won't even be able to enjoy it. On my previous machine Unity wouldn't work period. Never would it work. Ever. Even after uninstalling it completely and starting fresh. Not even the program used to make games would run. Hopefully if I do hit problems on my MBP, my iMac might still work fine even though it is slightly less spec-wise.

That is as long as my nVidia GeForce 750M with 2GB VRAM is good enough for it.

I fear I might end up making an impulse purchase of an Alienware Alpha just to play it. lol (I wasn't planning on getting one until summer or something.)

I'm oddly looking forward to most is the ability to have districts with their own ordinances and stuff. I'm going to try and recreate my at least a portion of the county I live in with its total population of 25K and two small towns. Not going to go nuts with it but I'll at least strive to get some of the basic layout set with the right zoning and some road layout but I'm probably going to get lazy with it... Actually I know I will be. Map importing could've been an awesome feature if done well.

Normal version is still here for just under $22. http://greenmangaming.com/vip/

For the Deluxe version put this code B1CYB0-CLSSD1-ARAAGM in when you're on the rewards section.

Yeah I'm looking forward to playing around with the different industry types. I liked Skye's tree farms and paper mills.

Thanks! Is there even any reason to get the Deluxe version? I don't want the 5 landmarks. I don't need a soundtrack. And I probably won't ever look at the art book.

Are there any YouTube playthroughs which are done by normal non-screaming people? I can't watch Twitch while at work. Cheers

I think the primary selling point is just the landmarks so yeah, if you don't care about them I don't see the point outside of giving the developers more money.

Wow - I may have to jump on this. The city sizes sound massive, was such a limiting factor in SimCity.

From what I'm aware the big problem with SimCity was the whole agent thing, with citizens going to the nearest place of work and then the nearest home causing massive issues with traffic. Does anyone know how this game deals with this? Also Simcity devs said they couldn't make bigger cities that would run efficiently, do big cities on this game run like shit?

Apologies if I sound skeptical but this sounds too good to be true

I understand your concerns, but this game makes the SimCity devs look incompetent. Individual agents DO travel according corresponding ways (from production to cargo port for example) and you can follow cars on their travel and they do exactly what you'd expect. You do have issues with traffic from time to time, but usually only because you didnt understand how traffic needed to be handled yet, there are so, so, so many solutions to approaching traffic, I'd have bought a game for the traffic management component alone tbh.

However, if you have no idea what you are doing and you carry low level mistakes along without taking care of them eventually, your bigger city WILL run like shit, but the streams made it so obvious that you can also just... be good at building your city to avoid all that.

I was in the "reserved" camp at first as well, but believe me, this game is nutty good.

At the same time, like Skye, I'm kind of disappointed in the farms. They don't look like farms. =(
Yeah. Farms are so tiny. But they did say they were going to look into merging fields by removing fences if two or more of the same plot type are next to each other. I bet mods will fix farms too in time. I want to build the vast corn fields of Canada.

I read (in one of the Paradox dev diaries?) that after they patch in tunnels then farms are up high on the list of things they want to improve. They kind of added them late and they aren't where they want them to be right now. At least they are in though, I hated how Simcity 5 didn't even include farms at all.

So, umm...something happened last night when I finished streaming. I can't say what just yet, because I need to talk to the publisher first, but I might have some VERY good news later on today.
