No Man's Sky - August 9, 2016

It's going to be on store shelves and marketed/co-published by Sony, I don't think the majority of people will consider it "indie".
Exactly. If it's on shelves next to other $60 games, the average person will just consider it another $60 game. There's no distinction between indie and AAA on the shelf; the price tag is the qualifier in people's minds

That's fine. However, why is the UK release always last? It is produced in the UK!

Yurope holding us back!! Obviously brexit is the only answer!!

Not really

I don't know what Molyneux's exact role was. I always assumed he was a lead designer or something.

As for Murray, I don't doubt that he's involved in making the game, but if you are going all over on every talk show pitching the game then you are a pitch man.
Not sure how much you've had your eyes on the game since it's reveal, but Sean didn't even want to be in the spotlight like he has been. He even went pretty much completely silent for months after doing so many appearances.

The only similarity I see in Murray and Molyneux is their love for what they do. Other than that, Molyneux talks about what he WANTS to do while Murray talks about what he IS doing. Molyneux always talks as if his creation is going to be the best thing ever, Murray on the other hand will say he doesn't even know if his game will actually be a good game. The list of differences goes on.

Anyways, delays always suck, but from recent footage we can tell they need as much time as possible to polish it up to meet peoples expectations, or atleast come close.

Why not just call Sean Murray the public face of NMS? To me it seems like your choosing to call him Molyneux-esque is you wanting to paint him in a very particular light.

You're also at best very dismissive of what the individuals at HG are bringing to NMS. (At worst incredibly poorly informed.)
Are you also similarly poorly informed about the success (both critical and in terms of sales) of Joe Danger?

Being sceptical is absolutely fine, (I'm hyped as fuck about the game, but that doesn't mean I fully expect it to deliver) but you seem to have crossed over from having healthy scepticism to something more like a bias against the SM/HG/NMS.

Yeah, the interview with Game Informer a while back really showed how humble and modest he is.
I would say, actually, we're quite stupid. And that's the reason why we've done this, because I think if we had sat down and thought it through, it would have seemed impossible and not a very good way to make a game.

But we just started doing it. I just started writing tech, and it sort of worked. I describe it as being on a train, and you start shoveling coal into that train, and it moves faster and faster and faster. So now we're like at breakneck speed. There's no escaping that train. If we jump off, we'll be killed. It's like this runaway train now.

That's actually true. You hit problems, and you think "Oh my god, we'll never be able to solve this", and then you sort of think, "Well...we have to." So, we do

...This is the hardest thing I've ever done.

Hello Games must be really embarrassed with the whole fan 'reaction'

If you're going to threaten someone's life over a video game, then you severe mental issues and need to get help immediately.

I'm usually fine with that but the development of this one is dragging so long I'm slowly becoming more cautious than before.

Well, but maybe they just revealed this game too early.

My favorite anecdote from Sean in that aforementioned interview is when he talked about how people from big companies working on Star Wars games and whatnot expressed interest in their engine, and would look shocked when Murray's team would generate a detailed planet in seconds, while the companies had huge teams of people working hours and hours to craft individual planets

Sean Murray did lie though....

About there being no NPCs in the game, because he didn't want to talk about them early on just so he didn't make a promise for a feature that he wasn't sure would pan out yet.

He's more like anti Molyneux than Molyneux.

Well you can't really compare the insane detail of a planet in Dice Battlefront to the generated stuff in NMS. Different games all together, I know, but I think if you could generate procedurally environments that look as good as hand crafted ones, devs would be doing it

Yo...can't that guy go to jail for that shit? Isn't threatening someone with murder really illegal?
Yes, it's illegal. A "credible threat of violence" where the victim could possibly "feel fear" can be a variety of charges, including assault (which could be a misdemeanor or felony), stalking, or terroristic threats.

Problem is, if you report that to authorities, it's doubtful they'll spend the resources required to track that person down and pursue criminal charges, but it's always possible, sure. If the police investigated every threat made over the Internet, they'd be back logged with cases for thousands of years, really.

Ah, not a big delay at all. Actually works better for me as I've got to finish Uncharted 4, The Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Bully (PS2onPS4) and a bunch of others, preferably before NMS releases.

It's just too bad because now there's no big releases for the summer (for PC, and titles I'd be interested in - Mirror's Edge doesn't interest me too much), august is already Deus Ex country.

I think the marketing budget more than the price tag is what makes most people decide between "AAA" and "Indie," by which I mean that the average person on the street probably isn't even aware of either term or what it implies, and so they're going to see the games that have been shoved in their faces as "AAA" and games that haven't as "not-AAA."

I can't see No Man's Sky being marketed anything like, say, Uncharted 4, or any of your traditional AAA shit.

No Man's Sky will probably suffer because its $60 box looks a bit arty and so no one will buy it when they see it next to Call of Duty. They need to put a dude with a gun on the cover to get maximum sale-age.

NMS having such a toxic fanbase on reddit is a funny and sad surprise.

Fans going apeshit over reporters providing pertinent information before corporations can spin it will always be ridiculous.

The game is a blank canvas with almost infinite places to explore. The perfect candidate for crazy people to project their every desire onto and build it up into something it can never deliver on, and then defend with entirely unwarranted zeal.

Now all the shit posting about Kotaku and Jason can stop.

If only the shitposting about NMS could stop.

Murray created the procedural engine that generates the planets. As in, there would be no No Man's Sky without the work he did on it. Sorry it's not impressive to you, but many developers are impressed. And Sean is the one on talk shows because he's basically the head of the studio and Sony wanted him doing PR spots to get people interested. I'm sure he'd rather just be coding.

If he was out there on IGN saying you'll be able to make friendships with aliens and mind-control the Sentinels and you'll see cyborg slugs and VR support and can co-op with 64 friends, sure, he'd be in the Molyneux Zone. But Sean is tight-lipped both because he doesn't want to spoil everything and because he doesn't want to promise features he can't deliver.

This is probably an accurate representation of Sean's state right now... sleep-deprived, insanely stressed, slightly crazy from the toxic community comments, and sick to his stomach from having to tell Sony at the last second that the game is delayed. Just needs more beard.

I feel that everything Sean Murray has ever shown us has been in good faith. I have no doubt that this delay is absolutely in the best interests of everyone in the long term and I'm prepared to wait just a couple more months for what is looking like a fantastic game.

When do you suppose he told Sony? Cause you can't honestly believe it was in the last few days.

He had one of the redditors message him on Twitter blaming him for delaying NMS, like Jason was personally responsible, when the article was published and how he was going to come find and kill him and his entire family. Thats how fucked up it was, and still is.

Not really

It's always made sense historically for retailers to have a unified release date for games and for people who get paid weekly, Friday is often payday.

I have seen articles about this before it's become a far more common question now that we're used to seeing things happening on a global scale.

EDIT:
There we go - Why are we stuck with games being released on a Friday? - Eurogamer

I really have no idea, but no not in the last few days. Last few weeks maybe, if Jason was hearing things for a while. Doesn't mean he doesn't still feel bad about delaying though; it had to be a tough decision, as I'm sure writing the blog post was. Missing project deadlines is never a good feeling, even if it's for the right reason. Especially when you have things like printed marketing materials and other PR support hinging on that date. I assume Sony ate some money on that.

I feel like, as far as delays go, this really isn't that bad. My backlog is pretty huge right now so, on a personal level, this allows me to get through a few more before this one hits.

Still super stoked for this game and looking forward to tackling it with a few less games in the pile.

Yeah, it's fine.

While its a bummer, I appreciate Devs who can take the community backlash and only release a product they are happy with

Way too many games release these days as broken pieces of shit that needs months of patches to get fixed

He could have alerted people weeks ago before telling retailers. Just as he could have told people he wasn't going to make 2015, instead of telling people "it's a secret." If he feels bad, it's more about money and the product, not about us. If he cared about what the players actually thought, he'd have been honest sooner. Which is fine. He owns a company, it's about making money. But don't pretend it's anything else.
