Western Animation |OT| Cartoon, Cartoon, Cartoon

TBS is apparently starting up a 'TBS Animation' block sometime soon. One of the shows is "Close Enough" by Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel.

Oh shit!

Final Space put its concept pilot on Youtube. I saw it about a year ago and was interested in seeing them fleshing it out a bit more. I'm glad they were able to make it a series.

Some more about the shows.

Close Enough is a surreal take on transitioning from 20-something to 30-something. The show centers on a married couple juggling such everyday challenges as parenthood, friendship, ham theft, stripper clowns and choosing the right day care.

”We couldn't be more excited to add one of animation's most impressive and popular voices, J.G. Quintel, to our growing slate of animated series," said Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS. ”J.G. hit the center of the demo target with Regular Show, and we're counting on him to bring this younger and more engaged audience to our network."

Close Enough joins TBS's iconic animated hit American Dad!, from Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, which will return with new episodes this summer; The Cops, a buddy comedy created by and starring Louis C.K. and Albert Brooks; Tarantula, a dark comedy about the residents of a seedy hotel from Carson Mell, scheduled to launch this year; and Final Space, an interstellar comedy created by independent filmmaker, actor, comedian and entrepreneur Olan Rogers.

I am extremely excited to see what JG Quintel does with a more mature-targeted cartoon.

But it's also really exciting to see Louis CK team up with Albert Brooks on a cartoon of all things.

I'm really glad we have another channel devoting time and effort to animation.

I'm really glad that we are getting more and more stations picking up adult animation.
I wonder if given enough time if we could eventually see more story/action based animation for adults. Unlikely I know, but i can dream :p

Retsupurae is now commenting on those creepy as hell YouTube "kids" videos, starting with this video (not safe for life). Nowadays, many parents will just search for YouTube playlists of kids videos to plop their kid in front of, and these things will often show up in them or appear as recommended videos, which is why they often have an unreasonably high number of views despite their low quality. As seen, they often involve really dirty or disturbing humor, but because they use characters from kid friendly properties, they get by on parents not noticing this. Slowbeef and TieTuesday are focusing on "Mackey Mouse" cartoons, but these exist for practically every popular kid friendly property. I know I often see MLP ones recommended to me.

Yeah, I've been hearing about this phenomenon. There are also these seemingly generated nursery rhyme videos that do the same thing and even some weird live action stuff as well. Wonder how YouTube doesn't look at this kind of stuff better, but then again I imagine things are so automated there it's hard to distinguish things.

I remember seeing my little 7 year old sister looking at some weird live-action Trolls video with a guy and two girls in face paint. I was genuinely creeped out and had to have a conversation with my dad about how it might be some weird fetish thing that she probably shouldn't be watching. I haven't sat down to watch them, mostly because I value my sanity and try to avoid as much cringe as possible.

Saprespark was talking about them too. Apparently Spiderman and Elsa are popular characters to use, and these videos make straight bank. I'm surprised Disney doesn't go hard on the videos using their characters, I don't think they would approve of Mickey Mouse getting pregnant and then having that child die in a gas explosion.

I think I can see the appeal though, when I was a kid I browsed Newgrounds and AlbinoBlackSheep and found many crude and disgusting flash videos of some of my favorite cartoon characters. I'm sure if I went back and found them I would just cringe and ask myself what was I thinking.

Not that I approve of people tricking parents and kids for admoney, but this kind of stuff has been around for a long time. Hopefully YouTube can find a way to truly filter them out from YouTube Kids.

Dunno if this has been posted, but this series suddenly blew up in /co/ and Tumblr:

Villanos, the link is in sapnish since it's a mexican series of shorts, but seems like people from all over the world are embracing it.

Frankly with this and Legend Quest suddenly getting moderately popular, i have become hopeful for my country's animation industry.

Reading up on Villanos/Villainous, the show is CN's first Mexican IP and was created for CN Latin America...but it was originally recorded in English? The creator refers to English as its original language (and he even asks fans to tell Cartoon Network to bring it to the US): https://twitter.com/AlanIturiel/status/866835944372002816

So the first airing of the shorts have been using the Latin American dub, but everything was originally recorded in English. You can see it in that quick "He Doesn't" poster background gag, since it's written in English. The LA dub also feels a bit off on the lip sync. The "original" version is in English...but its first airings will always be in Spanish and in Mexico/Latin America. I'm still confused.

Either way, it's fun to see something like this blow up. Hopefully Cartoon Network orders it for more than just 10 miniepisodes (some only 15 seconds). Of course, seeing as how long OK KO took, that's probably years away.

Something I found cool: Creator Alan Ituriel voices Black Hat in both the "original" English and the LA dub.

Huh, I came into this thread just to mention Villainous

I've been liking the translated shorts so far. Always been a big Billy and Mandy fan, and the show's been scratching that dark comedy cartoon itch. Apparently Markiplier's supposed to be voicing a character from the show. Not really a fan of his, but I'm sure my younger siblings will appreciate that lol (well, that is, if the show ever gets released in English)

Yeah i was a bit confused about that too, but a lot of mexican content creators do make their stuff in english, specially if this person did any web content before CN picked up the show, it was probably in english.

Wish CN would put it on the main network. Of course, not like they're starved for original content right now, they just keep refusing to air anything that isn't Teen Titans Go or Gumball.

Really enjoyed that. The character designs are nice so it's easy to see why it's gotten popular.

That was good. The art style is super dope. As others said, I totally think it could get popular on their main channel.

Oh man, thanks, this was super cool. I like how Villanos is a real demon kinda guy. Funny but also really horrifying.
The animation-segment at 3:30 has to be watched in slo-mo to be really appreciated.
Oh, plus youtube comments, "Demencia = Besto waifu". We are starting early :p

I can see why people like Villainous, though I personally thought it was okay. I think a full-fledged show would work wonders.

Normally I don't trust 4chan with things, but this seems really weird and I had to share it. 4chan is claiming Jared Shapiro, one of the writers for the Powerpuff Girls reboot, has self-inserted himself into the show and has Blossom fall in love with him. This character also only appears in episodes that Jared has written.

Granted, I could be really off base here and it could be a coincidence, not sure.

So I know we agreed not to talk about the new Powerpuff Girls Cartoon, but there was a recent episode where Blossom falls in love. That's fine right? It gets kinda weird when people noticed the kid Blossom falls for looks like one of the writers, and said writer voices the character...

It's a bit odd...

FYI the writer did the twerking episode as well.

Correction: The writer's name is Jake Goldman. The character (created and voiced by Goldman) is Jared Shapiro.

Goldman and Shapiro are both Jewish last names. I most closely associate those two names with the OJ Simpson trial. Goldman was the guy murdered for standing too close to OJ's waifu, while Shapiro was OJ's lawyer. Part of my brain is trying to figure out a pattern there, while another part of my brain is trying to shut down.

Like they didn't have enough reasons already. That show was awful. The fact that they even tried to do it without McCracken (or at least Faust) is ridiculous. Gotta get that $$$ I guess.

Hopefully the middling-to-hostile reaction to NuPPG compared with the high praise (with minor nitpicks) for the Samurai jack revival will help them realize that maybe it's a good idea to bring back the original creators and creative team.

I know it might be unfair to compare since Jack is a straight-up sequel season and conclusion. But there's a huge gap in quality between the two.

Yikes, that's a lot of red flags

Also a thing to ponder, it has to be some sort of broken rule that he constantly writes the character in, given that it means that he gets paid for voicing the character and he only appears in episodes written by him.

Speaking of the ending,
did they write Bobby & Ronnie Anne off of The Loud House, or are they setting them up for a spin-off series or a set of episodes later?

I'll be surprised if they're gone completely and it's way too soon for a spin-off series. Lauri isn't actually with Bobby most of the time. They're usually texting or talking on video chat which they can still do now. I'm not sure what they're going to do with Ronnie Anne though.

It's technically not the end of the season and I don't see them writing them off considering their popularity. There is a future episode
dealing with Clyde helping Lincoln get over his breakup
but I imagine that's not the end of them.

Bit late, but new episode of Hanazuki, now following a weekly schedule. Features an evil black unicorn fighting a giant diamond.

I am grateful you are watching this.

As far as the rest of the crew knows, the only audience are youtube spambots and someone who's sole review was "cancer."

New episodes for the next month or two, a short in front of the MLP movie, and then a new season in 2018. Seems Hasbro is happy and the toys haven't even hit the shelves yet.

The self-insert thing was gross for its own reasons, but I didn't even think about this aspect.

Hm, I thought all this was proven to be an unfortunate coincidence?

I miss Dan Vs. I hope Netflix can revive this underrated series.

Was just thinking about this show just a bit ago (I was feeling very "Dan" earlier). It really was brilliant with its clever writing and to notch cast, but it had pretty blah animation. It's funny, I feel like the show does the whole "everyday problems with a twist" routine BETTER than the likes of Regular Show, but Regular Show certainly looked better.

This is gold. I might have missed it, but who was the studio that did the Ant-Man shorts? They did an exceptional job with clean up for these shorts, as it's pretty difficult to keep a thick-thin line art consistency for animation.

Well, Dan Vs didn't have any forced drama or love triangles that could drag down the series

NuPPG is on its way out anyway, they've been dumping new episodes, unadvertised, at 7:30 PM on Sundays. They've been promoting *Clarence* more recently, and that's a show they've assiduously tried to ignore since the end of 2015.

It's a French Studio called Passion Animation studio. They did a handful of those Gorillaz music videos.

The directors are Ugo Bienvenu and Kevin Manach

There should be more of them later this summer.
