Meta raises Quest 2 prices by $100

I think everyone hoping for PSVR2 for less than $500 just got kicked in the nuts.

Dammit, Meta. I held off until they removed the Facebook account requirement and then they do this. Whatever. I've waited a few years, I can wait a few more.

This will certainly ease the pressure on Sony to provide a low price for their headset.

Meta's been bleeding money subsidizing its VR business, so it does make sense they feel the need to do this. They managed to get critical mass of users with the low price and make Quest 2 a success, and right now there's no real competition pressuring them. This price increase will likely also help with the upcoming Cambria that's supposed to be much more expensive. People would no doubt ask whether a significantly higher price tag device would be worth it compared to a cheap quest 2.

Wait, what? I was going to get one some day but if the price is going up then forget about it. Is it that in demand? How does this make any kind of sense?

Is it worth it for sideload use? Might get one in my country before it raises like hell and sell it at no loss.

and now they look like complete clowns. They want to be seen as a walled garden gaming platform like consoles, but it’s Completely unprecedented for consoles to go up in MSRP.

Should have kept this price increase for a successor device. A more powerful Quest 3 next year would have gone better at $399.

Apple really did a number on Facebook when they removed the ad tracking on iOS 😃

I suspect that a lot of people (like me) mostly bought it to connect to their PC and play fantastic Steam games, so the subisidized price isn't getting the Oculus Store returns that they wanted.
Think that's definitely a part of it. I also suspect that it (VR) generally doesn't yet have good software attach rates but happy to be proven wrong with sales numbers.

I was confused at first, but this makes sense. Now that their core business are struggling they need to stop the bleeding.

33% increase on a device that has been out for two years wow what scumlords. If you didn't have one before this is a blow to new adoption. Their new headsets will probably be heavily unavailable in terms of production at this rate probably why they're hiking prices along with greed.

You know whats really shitty is we have stock of the old Facebook branded one where I work inside but they aren't allowed to sell the stock, I guess not just because of the name change, but more this price change. Like anyone gives a fudge if it says Facebook or Meta on it, why not just clear the stock, probably they'll recall it and refurbish it with the new branding I'm guessing.

They actually said Facebook on it? I thought they only ever said Oculus, and then changed it to Meta.

I'm not sure about the actual branding on the device itself, it was more the box I think. Which would make the move even more cunty.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I was actually thinking about picking one up since they're dropping the Facebook account requirement next month.

Now, nope.

I wondered if this was gonna happen when they announced a Facebook account would no longer be required, as the Quest being a FB trojan horse was a big reason for them subsidizing it so hard.

But maybe that's not the only reason this is happening, or even the main one.

PS4 was supposed to be 500 and psvr was 800 and ps5 was 600, etc etc. If psvr2 comes in at $400 I wouldn't be surprised. We can only estimate a range on price at this point. $500 is likely the top of that range, so that would only leave down to go.

Anyway, it's bizarre for the price to jump up so much on quest2. Maybe they are trying to get the hike out of the way so $400 quest 3 looks like a better deal?

I dont know why anyone would want a vr device with none perfect (grey) black levels and poor FOV.

OLED all the way for VR.

Its a solid piece of tech for the old price but this move is trying to put the shit back in the horse. If it debuted at 399 they would have a more compelling case. This is just bizarre a reeks of greed. (even if the numbers say something else)

Hey Zuck, why don't you just throw out that stupid processor and sell us a cheaper and lighter unit that we can hook up to Steam. I mean, you've already done that before...
