PS5 Pro: $699 Is It Worth it? - The Digital Foundry Take

The greatest thing of DF, when it's about playstation they always find a negative angle. It's too expensive or too cheap, It's never right for them.

But launching 2 consoles at same time? Brilliant.
Having a base system(series s) that is weaker then console they released 2 years prior? Brilliant.
Creating the issue with slow and fast memory again? Brilliant.

For example the playstation portal(that was sold out, because of demand)

The reveal of that device led to riducule, even among playstation fans and youtube channels.

While the price at launch was only what 200? But not having OLED or having extra connectivity technology. Not good enough, should've created a expensive device apparently.

So there will always be something, and that something will only be used against playstation and not the wider industry.

Just set your watch for it, now that ps5 pro is going to rely on upscaling and frame generation, we can expect them to have issues with those technologies going forward.

Back on topic.

Value is subjective, and I’m the wrong person to talk about value…when I was building my PC i spent $200 more on my AiO cooler because it displayed nice GIFs (an entirely useless feature In hindsight) and I’m embarrassed about how much time I spent on RGB lighting .

But in this case, we’re only just midway through the gen, and there’s certainly a lot of value in the Pro even at the announced price. We pay even more for GPU upgrades on the PC side.

I have zero desire to hook my PCs up to my TVs, so this will provide a 4070 tier hardware to my living room which have the best displays in my house.

I’ll be buying this, though it’s still a bummer they’re making us buy the disk drive separately.

I’m almost beginning to come round on the 2TB storage. My PS5 seems to have killed my 2TB Samsung 980 Pro (seen lots of complaints online) so perhaps it’s better to have an all-in solution.
the 980 pro had a hardware defect that was leading to early death, iirc you had to update the firmware via PC last year to prevent the issue

DenchDeckard

Moderated wildly
I'm seeing a new narrative being formed.

All over socials and places, I am seeing people saying that you're just broke so you can't afford a ps5 pro. It's an interesting move. No one wants to be called a cheapskate.

Great tactic imo.

Yeah, I wasn’t able to update before putting it in the console.

I put the drive in a USB NVMe adapter but it doesn’t get recognized by Samsung Magician so I can’t do the firmware update.

Only option left would be to stick it into a free NVMe slot in my motherboard and try to update. I’m able to format it in Windows, but in the PS5 the format process fails at 13% or so.

Seems to happen to quite a number of people

Yeah, it’s impossible to have the money to buy a Pro but still be responsible enough with your finances to avoid overpriced products.🤣🤣

Eh....it's a stupid take. A couple of people here said something similar. Not any different, though, than those who are chastising folks who say they are buying PS5 Pro. Folks are too worried about what others do with their money.

PlayStation 2 EU launched in November 2000 in Europe for roughly 550 Euro's.
Using an inflation calculator, that results into a value north of 920 Euro's today.
I was one of the few ppl in my country who bought it at launch at that price, and i was teenager, massive jump in power vs psx was simply crazy not to notice.
Now in my 40s i see very lil value/improvement vs base ps5 to spend that 800euro for console and 120 euro for disc drive so total 920euro.

We have no problem with price of the console itself, its combo of console specs, price, new games/ips/exclusives aka total value proposition, which should be all on sony to convince us, the most hardcore playstation fanbase, we should be the target audience for this shit after all.

Watching DF covering Sony products, is it worth it?

I might get it at some point. To me it's worth it, but our first baby is on the way so it will have to wait.
Yea, priorities. So you know what you got to do. Tell your lady that she's going to have hold that baby in for another year.

Hope Sony adds frame generation for VRR screens. Performance modes going from 60 to 90FPS would be a nice boost in fluidity, and the slight increase in latency should be very acceptable for most players, especially on a gamepad. It would be a no-brainer feature.

It's a yes and no answer.
PS5 Pro offers great performance but at that price you might as well go for a PC. Free online, cheaper games, etc. but this is if you're not in the PS ecosystem.

The yes comes in if you're already invested in PS ecosystem with games and accessories. It's a powerful console worth the upgrade if interested in it.

This dude really used a 3060 Ti as a PS5 Pro equivalent GPU... DF already has shown the base PS5 beating it in some games... i love how defensive PC guys get every time a new console is coming (and i am a PC fan myself). Not to mention not including the OS, Keyboard, Mouse, Controller on the budget and 1 TB less of storage.

Did you watch the entire video to see his conclusion or you just stopped and came here to fanboy rage?

How am i raging? And yes, i watched it. What part of his conclusion? That you can then go and sell the 3060 Ti for a 3080? You can use that same argument for upgrading to the Pro.

PS2 had a DVD drive which was still pretty new at the time. A DVD player was about $200 alone pending where you lived. First console to have one.

PS5 Pro has no optical drive at all. And if you want to buy one separately, it's $80 US/120 Euros. You can buy an external BR drive for PC for $50 or less on Amazon.

At first I had not even an iota of interest in the Pro as I'm very satisfied with my base version. But if it proves to be incredibly capable and the difference is noticeable to my paltry eyes then I might change in mine for the upgrade. If this gen is going to be surprisingly long then it might be worth it.

Why is the dude in the thumbnail sleeping?

I thought he was a pianist at first.

He said he failed to build a PC equivalent to the PS5 Pro because the GPU took up a large amount of the $700 budget.

He then decided to build a PC anyway using the $700 budget, which is why he chose the 3060Ti to test the performance of a $700 PC. Which gave reasonable results.

After testing, he said these results doesn't matter as it's best to wait on professionals like Digital Foundry who has the tools to do proper testing on the PS5 Pro performance.

This is how I know you didn't watch the video.

What are you talking about man? The gpu in the pro costs around 550 dollar to buy as a videocard. Ps5pro is a great deal for the buck. It’s just that it’s a lot of bucks, and so is a gpu upgrade. Deal with it.

I hate how some are attacking others for deciding to either buy it or not.

I know a lot of non "brokies" who are content with the current PS5 and are just saying no thanks

Going by the IGN polls, almost nobody thinks it's worth it. And almost all YT dudes talking about it says it's not worth it. Just stick to PS5 and save yourself $300.

I live in Brazil and the taxes over here are crazy high...but to each it's own. I'm buying one because I want. At the end of the day, it's the consumer that has to see enough value to justify the purchase.

In case of the PS5 Pro, if those recent leaks from Moore Law is Dead are real, than I'm gladly getting one.

That doesn't mean shit lol.

Most the people voting on this probably never were interested in buying it, just joining the bandwagon.

I have a story about IGN that tried telling people they couldn't see 1080p unless your TV was at least 55" so nothing against your post but IGN is a laughing stock

As far as people on Youtube wonder how many have talked to people that have actually worked with devkits and hearing exactly what this thing does

I can assure you for me personally spending $1400 for 2 of them is easily worth it for me

The takes are really getting absurd. Either we are broke if we don't or folks like DenchDeckard DenchDeckard are calling us corporate fanboys if we do.
I guess me wanting 2 makes me a really naughty boy

"Almost nobody". Those numbers are right in line with PS4 Pro sales last gen.

It might had been related, but I remember IGN comparing two shots during the One/PS4 days. It had to do with claiming one shot was way clearer because it's at 1080p when both shots looks the same quality. Then they admitted they made a mistake and both were 720p. lol. That might not had been the exact scenario, but it was something like that. Whomever did the article either couldnt even tell, or literally lied making a statement and never was even part of the test.

85-90% of people sticking with the base products is "almost nobody" buying it.

It's worth it. Although I would suggest spending more and just getting a good gaming PC. Cheaper games, free online, mods, Reshade, and complete granular customization on how you want the game to run.
1. PC gaming is so different to console gaming, I have no idea why this equivalence is constantly being put forward.
2. Do these people not realise that millions of gamers have zero interest in PC gaming? Like…why is there this push to encourage console gamers to switch to PC? It’s been happening more and more recently (especially after the Pro reveal). I genuinely don’t get it.

Because you get more for your money. It's that simple.

lol....no it isn't. That's about what we should expect from the enthusiast segment. Again.....just like last gen.
And those online polls a few days ago are done on a game site which has core fans. If anything they should be amping up the ratio since core users will be more likely to buying higher priced special gear. The typical person or family not doing game polls will just buy the standard PS5.

They are pretty hard on most hardware as of late. There are, of course, exceptions. At least that's my perspective.

edit: I feel like you are overstating their positivity towards the Series consoles. They liked them for sure, but they also displayed measured skepticism.

"According to Ampere data, over its life, the PS4 Pro sold-through 14.5m units, around 12% of total PS4 sales. We’re expecting a similar dynamic for the PS5 Pro, with the expectation that it will sell-through around 13m units by 2029. "

Not "nothing"
Have seen estimates of anywhere between 10 to 15 million around the time the PS6 launches and "whispers" believe they are making at least $200 per console if not more

Thats $2 Billion+

Add is a big surge of disc drives and stands ;)

Twitter is filled with PC gamers showing off their PC build to beat the PS5 Pro and it's around $800.

Just insane. lol
Dude some of those suggested builds constitute hate crimes against PC Gaming.

I'm seeing idiots suggesting discontinued chipsets, shitty mobos that may not even have wifi, making builds with no ram, recommending pre-builts with integrated graphics, the absolute desperation to will this thing into failure is driving the internet gaming communities completely insane.

In 4 or so years, tons of people who got a "console killer build" based on these retarded recommendations are going to flock to consoles again (making that first build a last build) and PCMR types will act surprised just like they did at the start of this gen.

Which is why they are forcing us to buy 2 TB SSDs, I'm sure. Still don't like that, but I get it. They know the enthusiasts will pay.

"Worth it" is a very subjective term. There is no objective yes or no, to this question.
Whats ypur priority?
Game cloths vacation?

I know people who spend hundreds on sneakers or more on other cloths.
Or guns or phones or whatever.

If im an asshole i say the series x 2tb ssd for 599 is absolutely not worth it but we dknt talk about that. Ps5 pro with its 2tb for a 100 more is a much better value than the xbox. You dont even need an xbox anynore. I have gamepass on my tv .

So to me and to everyone in a few months time , the pro is worth it.

The price is a shocker only cuz A you dont have your stimy to pay for it and B you are used to the 400 price for the last decade.

If we want to be frank the ps5 was selling for a 1000 plus due to scalpers and people bought it. Sure as shit it wasnt worth bu it was a good excuse.

I also dont get these idiots crying and laughing about the price and then see all their junk and crap in the background they wasted money on.

I can list hundreds of items that went up in price and most are electronics so even now at 700 thebps5 pro is a good value.

Now if you buy this on as well from scalpers , yeah its not worth it and you are an idiot

No you dont. What pc is 700 that gives you more for your money.

Please everyone post a pc from any store at 700 and lets see whats in it.

What more do you get nowdays from a pc?
90 percent of people are on tablets or phones. They browse thebinternet on it they watch virtualy everything on it they send emails pictures videos on it etc.

If anything its the pc market people turn away from more and more. I kniw several households where pc got replaced fully or partialy by a tablet or phone.

It will be worth to a lot of people. If the ps5 was worth for over a 1000 bucks at release then the same people will buy at 700

I remember analysts predicting the cannabis market would be worth $250 global billion sales right now in 2024-2025. That prediction was years ago when weeds stocks were hot. I dont think all the big companies revenue combined is even $20 billion. Most of the went broke, are penny stocks or merge for survival.

As for comparing similar PS4 pro and PS5 pro rates, these gaming polls are from gamers who are more hardcore into mtx or specs. So in reality, all the mom and pops buying a game system who dont care about polls or game site will focus on the standard PS5 which in marketplace will drive down %.

It's be like going on a Honda Civic forum and guys talking latest rims and spoilers. Might be great buys for them. But in reality, the avg Civic buyer looking for a value car isnt going to buy that stuff.

So if the polls show a low % already for PS5, the real purchase ratio will even be lower when the normies focus on buying the lower priced PS5s.
