Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Only for special editions. I don't see them making a standard disc SKU.
No, discs are a relic of the past.
Where? here in Europe you can only get expensive drives from scalpers. You can buy the bundle of console + disc drive.
Regarding the box, I assume you can Photoshop a white one and send it somewhere to print it on a carboard xDD
Owning something is never a relic of the past. No, discs are a relic of the past.
Sure, they can do whatever they want. They‘re clearly pushing for a digital only future but aren’t sure if the market is ready and as such leave their options open.
Discs are the best thing consoles have at the moment, it fucks me up that we have only few years left before they are gone (and any kind of actual ownership with them).

Chill son they made killzone
The thing you own may be, though. The term most people use to describe such things is "antiques."Owning something is never a relic of the past.

supply situation with drives will even out. And Sony seems just don't want to bother with separate SKU and all hurdles related to it, probably estimated that they will get no profit with it (enthusiasts as a core target for pro are sophisticated enough to buy and install disk drive separately).

Doubt itI'd say the lack of Disc Drive option is probably holding back sales.
You think people that wanted a disc drive just got the digital instead?
Not without the disc drive..
and if they can't get it due to availability they probably gonna hold off buying altogether, with a few exceptions.
yeah, evil corporations blablablaThey could, but they really don't want you to buy a disc drive, because that means you potentially buying games cheaper than on their digital store.
That is why they made sure stock was limited for the disc drive accessory.
BoldedDoubt it
Most will settle to "buy now Pro and wait for disk drive availability"
Most for sure are mixed collection, physical only probably a small minority. And mixed collection can sustain on digital part for the time being.

Maybe because gamers haven't moved an inch since the Xbox one failure and doing what they've done with the Pro is going to cost them at least two onion layers of their PS6 sales at launch if they repeat this situation. What’s the point? They make more money this way. If you really want want one you will eventually buy one
Old cards are getting the new DLSS yet they're needlessly blocked from running multiframegen despite having more power than a 5070. Then people are acting like this isn't manipulative?Someone made a comment that he's more likely to buy a 50 series card now that it's known the 40 series will support DLSS4. I get that - he doesn't feel like Nvidia is being as manipulative as they could have, so it's loyalty resulting from good will.
It takes months to increase supply (+logistic)Disc drive availability situation is still extremely dire, particularly in Europe. I have several friends still looking for one at MSRP. I was lucky to get one in December. Sony doesn't seem to care at all, they don't seem to be making any efforts to increase supply.
A few and most are quite different things.Bolded
Too many people still rely on a physical collection I guess for them to totally abandon support.Doubt it

If they wanted to go all digital - why would they not made ps5 pro digital only and instead fo to sketchy road of "limited availability of disk drive" (when you can strip slim of disk drive)
99% of the times its mishaps in management of expectations (a typical human error, planning IS hard) and not an evil plot
but conspiracy theories fans will still believe in aliens
They support it on slim which does have separate SKU with disk drive, because for slim target market it's important, as unsophisticated people might have problem with installing driveToo many people still rely on a physical collection I guess for them to totally abandon support.

I think you can actually buy disk slim, strip it of disk drive, resell slim as digital - and get drive at around msrp price, which make argument that Sony "forcing into digital future" kinda mute.
I think we need to see how well Pro is selling first before the judgment can be fully made on customer acceptance.Customers have accepted to take the cost of a disc drive separately so now Sony, and MS, will probably release the next gen consoles with no built-in disc drive for 600$, so save some money for the disc drive if you want to go physical
Sure, they can do whatever they want. They‘re clearly pushing for a digital only future but aren’t sure if the market is ready and as such leave their options open. Given the demand of external disk drives they might sell a bundle down the line recognizing that physical media is still in high demand…or the opposite.![]()
While true, "somehow you guys live with that in PC world"Owning something is never a relic of the past.

What's the point? It's non-issue for themThey could, but they make more money by killing off the second hand game market as much as they can.
Most likely not. The whole point of leaving the disk drive out was to get to a certain price point and even at $699, people’s heads exploded.
Exactly. So why would they add the drive and drop the price if that was their strategy? They’re not going to reduce the SSD size or anything. No, disc drive is probably cheaper than that SSD upgrade. They removed the drive to make money on selling it with huge margins and/or to force more people into digital.

Seriously, is that what’s keeping people from buying a Pro? The disk drive? You have the option to buy one if matters that much to you. Makes 0 sense for Sony to release another sku.
You can buy the drive right now on PS Direct for $79.Option to buy one? That would be nice...
Pro without disc drive offer me less options than my current disc model. Disc drives aren't available and when they are - prices are ridiculous.
Price of the console itself is ridiculous outside US...
Not as long as you suckers are willing to pay extra for basic featuresThe fact that the box is 'black', like the PS5 Digital, makes me think a 'white' one with the disc drive included could be a thing in the future.
Thoughts?
