Why has the narrative switched from just buy a PC to a sudden attack on PC gaming?

Well, talking about myself, sometimes I want to just get a good gaming PC, but I think I can't afford the price of a great PC who can be used without upgrades for many many years. I'm fine with my base PS5, patiently waiting till the PS6.

I think there might very well be a console crisis with the next generation. Just as only a handful of PC only titles exist. I forsee only a handfull of PS6 only games to exisit.
Games that support multiple gens of consoles going all the way back to PS4 will be the majority of games being developed.
At that point. Just get a PC or Just get a Console will gel together to get you the same experience.

The differences still exist. Consoles will still be simpler and cheaper. That's the draw for the vast majority. PC gamers are not typically looking for the same experience as console gamers, and vice versa. Either way, I don't see PS4 being supported when PS6 arrives.

PS4 will be like Windows 10. They say they want to kill it off, but then say they will extend support for a few more years, over and over.

This is quite the take....considering more PC games that were previously exclusive to PC have come to consoles over the years than the other way around.

By far.
The attitude is way different, tough. You have people with hurt feelings saying they've been betrayed by Sony, meanwhile, were over here just saying "about time" when Neverwinter Nights get ported over 20 years later.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I think people get way to invested in these things.

But I do agree with the perspective that it is good to have exclusives to spur interest in the platform and I would point to Nintendo as a great example of that. Your platform needs to have an identity and exclusive software/IP is important to that.

I don’t think so. You underestimate the number of games that were skipping PC until recently. Even games that had no reason to such as Dark Souls, FF games, Persona, or the Tales series weren’t on PC.

I was mainly talking about Playstation, but consoles overall fall into the same situation. BF, Xcom, All CRPGs, Halflife, Crysis, All Simulators, Civ, etc. They were mainly all exclusive PC games previous to PS3/360 generation.

But recently I agree alot of previous console only games have gone to PC too.

The only thing I've seen change because of neogaf is that the "console war" has changed from PS5 vs Xbox to PS5 vs PC now that Xbox has fallen.

You know what, PC gamers have gotten away with being above the fray for ages. It's because they mostly kept to themselves, rarely involving themselves in the console war.

Microsoft co-opted PC gaming because they want to own that too and they fucking HATE Sony, make no mistake. Many of the top human beings at Microsoft hate the human beings at Sony and their fans. They want to make sure that Xbox leavers head to PC. The bad feelings between MS and Sony and the market leadership of Sony have made PC and Xbox have an allied cause.

After this began to happen, many PC gamers began to get vocal with some of their long held beliefs and suppositions. Many of these beliefs are antiquated and incorrect. Most of them are meant to agitate. Agitprop against Sony. In doing so they got the attention of the average online Sony fan.

Now they are finding out what it means to pick a side in the console war. Every shitty thing their preferred platform has going for it, Sony fans are going to highlight. It really feels super shitty when others are shitting on your favorite thing all the time. It's almost like PC fans don't like a taste of their own medicine.

You forgot:

Faulty hardware. Not just Nvidia's badly designed 12VHPWR connector, but also the absolute disaster of dying Intel 13th/14th gen processors.
Yeah good point, that one too.

In general there are many strings to pull now for those who want to take a negative stance.

The cost has to be the most relevant one though. I’m deeply invested in PC as a platform now and is generally positive, but the cost right now is absurd.

Can’t convert directly from local currency to USD but if I compare some local prices on PC graphics cards to low end and high end consoles you can get how bad things are.

Xbox Series S ~ $350
PS5 Pro ~ $950

RX 9070 XT ~ $1050
RTX 4080 Super ~ $1500
RTX 4090 ~ $2500 (not available anymore…)
RTX 5090 ~ $3500……

🤷‍♂️

My desktop PC with a 4090 cost me $5000 in 2022…

My living room PC with a 4080 Super cost me $3000 in 2024…

Other than random posters or random comments on the web, haven't seen any sort of overall narrative of either kind. Unlimited money might cause that kind of discussion to come up for a moment but no one would care.
But thats like worrying because you got 5 good reviews at work and a single bad one. I mean you could ignore ALL the good ones. But thats a great way to live alone covered in your own filth and staring out the peephole on the door waiting for the mailman to leave because you never put on pants. Who gives a fuck about randomness like that.

This is why for me and I’m probably in the minority of this. I do a gaming laptop and console. Me personally I don’t care to have a stationary desktop for gaming power and getting into the rat race of frames and performance. PC won’t ever have the optimization that console will because a console doesn’t have multiple configurations. For me as long as I have a gaming laptop that’s on par with a console at 1080p or 1440 I’m good. Plus I like the portability aspect of being able to carry generations of games with me on the go. I know it’s not the ideal take but it works for me. I game the most on my laptop but if the performance is trash on it I always keep a console handy, Besides I can do other stuff besides gaming on it as well.

PC costs are getting ridiculous. For the longest time you could expect to upgrade to a new, faster PC for the same price as the old build. But now things are only getting more and more expensive.

It's no fun anymore if you want to upgrade an old card, for instance an old RTX 3080 to a modern direct equivalent (5080) and you find you can't afford the new cards anymore, you'll have to go down to a 5070 and then the upgrade suddenly doesn't make as much sense anymore.

Yup yup yup. Plus, you can’t even buy new graphics cards because of scalpers and low supply. It’s impossible to build what you want to build, you have to go with whatever you can find.
You can buy a $6000 prebuild though….

I don't think there is an "attack on PC gaming".

Rather, I think PC gaming is both in the best and worst shape it's ever been in.

  • Worst due to obscene part pricing, terrible AAA game performance issues, RT'g driving up game hardware requirements and other issues like this.
  • Best due to the absolute gift that is indie game self-publishing that is providing some of the best non-AAA gaming experiences in the history of gaming that are carrying the industry; since AAA is imploding due to a combination of wokeness and ballooning devs costs.
PC gamers are some of the most vocal critics of their own preferred platform online. So that's where the apparent "attack" seems to be stemming from. And it just so happens that they have more to complain about than ever before, despite simultaneously having access to the widest selection of games than ever before (due to first-parties publishing their games on PC too).

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Oh and sony fanboys arent tiring with their second of coming of jesus narrative? Come on man

They're more delusional than annoying. It's hard to read anything PCMR types post without just thinking "shuuuuutttt upppppppp".

Which I say as someone literally playing something on PC right now.

There was a narrative? And it changed? I need to spend less time playing video games and start paying attention.

By far.
But most PC gamers are happy for that to happen as long as the game remains intact and isn't dumbed down (poor Supreme Commander 2).
It definitely doesn't destroy 'the magic' if a PC game gets a console port.

What you even talking about?

Last couple of days afaik, it was PCMR bitching about MHW being a bad port because of consoles

Most of the time, PCMR don't give a shit about consoles, it's only when some bad port shows up they remember 🤣

what are you talking about? what narrative?
That's where I'm at, I'm guessing it's a selective narrative.

I think he's talking about the unhappy 50 series GPU customers.
Yeah, I'm assuming so.

I haven't noticed an "attack on PC gaming" at all personally, lmao. Good and great ports happen, and so do bad ones. Nothing has changed in that regard. The biggest negative in PC gaming as of late is the whole Nvidia GPU thing, lol. I wouldn't blame all of PC gaming for that, I would blame Nvidia, lol.

If you decided today is the day to build a PC, what do you even do? I went on Amazon typed in "nvidia GPU", and got for the first three choices:

1. A 3060 for $433
2. A 3050 for $221
3. A 5080 for $2,108

What the fuck even is this? And that's just one part. The prices of other parts have also gone up and have increased price discrimination. Even mobos are fucking expensive now. I went on a PC site "recommended motherboard" and the "budget" option was almost $200. Used to be the budget mobo was $75.

It’s awful yeah.
I’m oddly satisfied over finding a 4090 2 years ago, it’s a superb card and can’t be bought today and the alternative on the top is a non-existent $3500 5090 (inflation and taxes infested country).

It depends what you wanna do, i have a gaming PC, Switch and a PS5.
A PC can do way more than a console in the first place. But in the end i game more on the PlayStation, the Switch is a Nintendo Games only console anyways.
And I have a PS5 that is a cool dustcollector since I have a PC. I will never go back to consoles. I feel dumb for not buying a PC sooner.

Might be that PC gaming has been on a downtrend since 2017, and finally people are waking up to how poor of an experience it is (especially for the money spent).
Downtrend?
AI analysis:
PC gaming is currently on an **upward trend**. The gaming industry as a whole is growing, and PC gaming remains a significant part of it. Factors like the increasing popularity of esports, advancements in PC hardware, and the rise of immersive technologies like VR and AR are driving this growth.
Additionally, platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store continue to expand their user bases, making PC gaming more accessible.
However, there are challenges too, such as the competition from consoles and mobile gaming, as well as the high cost of building or upgrading a gaming PC. Despite these, the overall trajectory for PC gaming appears positive.

Everybody has a narrative these days about a game platform getting bad or already bad, when in reality only certain things are worse while things that have gotten better are being taken for granted.

The truer points are Xbox unit sales are low, Sony has more misses than hits like everyone else with live-service games, people want a new Switch already because the hardware is ancient, and PC has stuggergate + Nvidia's GPU pricing.

On the PC end, one of those issues is currently getting solved with AMD finally offering decent mid-tier GPU value again over Nvidia, and Intel has a budget $250 card...so the cards most people can afford aren't terrible anymore, just maybe not in stock always.

Stuttergate is still the biggest remaining problem, which I think will get solved because it's even leaking into consoles more often, like with my friend's experience on base PS5 playing Monster Hunter: Wilds. Otherwise, I've never had more to play and emulation is also in a great place.
